Are You Trying to Mark Me? (GL, ABO) - Chapter 29
“Can you help me persuade Min Wenyi to join the recording of this variety show?”
Chu Jiazhi looked at Yu Ran and said clearly, “After all, this production team is really good. It’s a great opportunity.”
Yu Ran paused and replied, “I’m not very familiar with this kind of thing. You have a good relationship with the boss, right? If you talk to her, she should listen to you.”
Chu Jiazhi shook his head. “Min Wenyi acts like she doesn’t care, but deep down, she doesn’t listen to anyone. I’ve known her for a long time and still can’t figure her out.”
He glanced at Yu Ran and smiled. “That’s why I’m hoping you can help me. Min Wenyi hasn’t been on a variety show for a long time. This shoot could really help her gain a lot of fans’ favor.”
“But…”
“Please, just try to convince her, okay?”
Looking at Chu Jiazhi’s polite smile, Yu Ran thought for a moment and finally said, “I’ll try, but I can’t promise I’ll succeed.”
After all, Min Wenyi was her boss.
Hearing this, Chu Jiazhi smiled brightly. “I believe you’ll get it done.”
After all, gossip spreads faster than my bragging!
Not knowing what Chu Jiazhi was thinking, Yu Ran kept wondering how she could persuade Min Wenyi to listen to her advice.
Later, Yu Ran invited him to her home, but Chu Jiazhi was afraid Min Wenyi would be mad at him, so he decided not to go. He turned his car around and drove out of the gate.
Watching Chu Jiazhi’s car disappear, Yu Ran sighed helplessly and went upstairs.
Min Wenyi stayed upstairs all day. Apart from coming down once at noon for lunch, she didn’t come down again.
Nobody knew what she was doing up there.
Yu Ran never found the chance to tell her about seeing Chu Jiazhi today.
After dinner, Min Wenyi went to yoga. Yu Ran finished cleaning the kitchen and sat at the coffee table in the living room, fiddling with her laptop on the floor.
Lately, Yu Ran had been sick and thinking about quitting, so she hadn’t checked fan letters in a long time.
After scanning through them, Yu Ran found most were ordinary messages. Besides many loving notes, there were also some hateful ones.
Luckily, Min Wenyi never saw those. Yu Ran wasn’t too upset by them either.
At first, she thought those people were unreasonable, but over time she got used to it.
She replied to the letters one by one in the usual tone. But as she reached the later ones, she noticed something different.
It wasn’t anything troublesome, just a few letters from loyal fans.
Though she didn’t know them personally, the nicknames seemed familiar, so Yu Ran couldn’t help but read more carefully. What she saw made her a little sad.
One young girl seemed to be in her teens. She had liked Min Wenyi for a long time, once followed her concerts and movie releases, and even worked as a fan manager for a while. But in the past two years, she had been diagnosed with a serious illness and stayed in the hospital continuously.
The doctor said I probably can’t leave the hospital all winter. I was really sorry to miss the last award show. But my parents won’t let me go out. During this time, I’ve watched all your TV dramas. Maybe because of the themes, I can never feel happy, so when I’m free, I watch your variety shows from three years ago. It really makes me very happy.
… Wenyi, your smile is really beautiful. You’re the sunshine in my heart. So I hope you can keep smiling forever.
The letter wasn’t long, only about five or six hundred words, but Yu Ran found it hard to keep reading.
She looked up at Min Wenyi. So talented, and so many people liked her.
“Boss,” Yu Ran said, sitting on the floor and looking toward Min Wenyi, “would you consider going on a variety show?”
Min Wenyi, still stretching, glanced at her and said lightly, “Why are you asking this all of a sudden?”
“Nothing much,” Yu Ran said, “I was just reading a fan letter. Someone said she watches all your old variety shows in her hospital room, but the most recent one was from three years ago.”
Min Wenyi stopped moving and turned to look at her.
Yu Ran continued, “I’m not saying you have to go, but variety shows can bring happiness to people. Maybe it would warm this cold winter a little.”
“Well…”
Yu Ran looked at Min Wenyi, blushing slightly. “A lot of people like you, so I want to see you happy and smiling all the time…”
Her voice grew softer as she spoke, suddenly feeling like she was meddling.
Whether Min Wenyi went on a show or not was her own decision. What right did a small assistant like her have to decide?
When Min Wenyi didn’t kick her out after discovering Yu Ran was an Omega, that was already kindness.
Quietly raising her head, Yu Ran saw Min Wenyi standing still without saying anything. She felt like maybe Min Wenyi was upset…
“Sorry, I was meddling,” Yu Ran quickly apologized. “I just happened to see this fan letter and thought if she could watch your variety shows in the hospital, she’d have a happy new year…”
Before she finished, Min Wenyi stepped forward.
“Move over.”
Reaching out, Min Wenyi pulled the laptop closer, sat beside her, and asked, “Which fan is it?”
Yu Ran was momentarily stunned, then hurriedly pointed at the screen and said, “It’s this one!”
Min Wenyi leaned in to take a closer look. She moved the mouse carefully, her eyes fixed seriously on the screen as she read through the short letter.
Yu Ran was squeezed between the sofa and Min Wenyi, barely able to move. Every slight shift made their knees brush against each other, which made Yu Ran especially nervous.
She could hear the clicking sound of the mouse and her own chaotic heartbeat.
Even though the room was very quiet, it felt unusually noisy.
After some unknown amount of time, Min Wenyi finished reading the email. She moved her finger and took a screenshot, sending it to her phone.
“Yu Ran, do you really want me to go on the variety show?”
The assistant who had been called by name tried hard to keep her posture, then replied, “Not really. If you want to go, I’ll come with you.”
Min Wenyi glanced at her and couldn’t help but smile a little.
“You said you’d follow me wherever I go,” Min Wenyi said, tilting her head to Yu Ran, “Then come with me.”
Later, Min Wenyi posted a short message on Weibo.
Min Wenyi: Thanks to all the fans for the support. Today, while my assistant was sorting through my emails, she found a fan who said they’ve watched my variety show from three years ago several times. Actually, I want to tell you all, the new variety show is already in the works. Stay tuned~
Wow, finally new work from Min Min?!
What kind of variety show? Can you give us a sneak peek???
I want to see Min Wenyi sing! The fairy’s singing is the best—sending love to the amazing Min Wenyi!!!
As the comments started to get lively, Chu Jiazhi’s call came through immediately.
Min Wenyi swiped to reject the call with annoyance.
“How come you posted on Weibo without telling me first?” Chu Jiazhi’s voice was sly like a fox. Min Wenyi could almost see him wagging his tail on the other end.
What a tricky old fox.
“You’ve been secretly meeting with Yu Ran, haven’t you?” Min Wenyi snorted coldly, warning, “Don’t even think about making a move on her.”
Chu Jiazhi laughed from the phone. He said calmly, “Calling it ‘secret meetings’ is a bit much. I’m doing it for your own good. And I just said it casually—I didn’t expect her to actually convince you.”
“Let me think… the last time someone changed your mind was that so-called ‘genius’ Director An, right? But that was almost seven years ago.”
“Why don’t you tell me why this girl means so much to you, enough to change your mind?”
Min Wenyi narrowed her eyes dangerously. “You’re testing me.”
That wasn’t a question or an exclamation—it carried a heavy pressure that made the man on the other end a little embarrassed.
“Don’t be mad. I didn’t dig up anything,” Chu Jiazhi said, “But honestly, you care about your assistant so much—if something happens to her, you’ll be the one crying.”
“If you say one more nonsense word, I’ll cancel the contract immediately.”
“Heh, I’m not joking, Min Wenyi.” Chu Jiazhi swiped his screen as he spoke. “I’m just warning you. After all, in our line of work, we’re always going to be lonely.”
Min Wenyi suddenly went silent. Chu Jiazhi was right—they actors might earn money, but they gave up their freedom.
From then on, they were transparent people. Their moods, likes, lovers, and marriages could all be laid out on a table for everyone to criticize and gossip about.
Min Wenyi turned her head and looked at Yu Ran, who was tidying up in the living room. She suddenly felt weak.
She wanted to protect this person, but she wasn’t sure if she was doing the right thing.
After all, Yu Ran was an Omega. One day, she would have an Alpha who loved her deeply—and she herself…
Min Wenyi hung up and tossed the phone on the sofa, then walked over behind Yu Ran.
“Hmm?”
The assistant turned around, smiling brightly, and asked, “What’s up?”
Looking at that radiant smile like the morning sun, Min Wenyi felt that even if Yu Ran ended up with someone else, at least for now, they had a good working relationship, right?
“Nothing much. The date’s been set. You can start packing.”
Min Wenyi smiled, “We’re leaving next weekend, heading south.”
