Are You Trying to Mark Me? (GL, ABO) - Chapter 7
“Little assistant, are you a Beta or an Omega?”
Yu Ran stared blankly at the delicate-featured boy sitting in the shade of the tree, suddenly feeling a chill run down her spine.
“I…”
Lu Yin stared at her intently, saying with a hint of something in his voice, “It seems Min Wenyi doesn’t like Omegas very much, does she?”
Indeed, Min Wenyi, being an Alpha, had never shown any particular fondness or dislike for Omegas in any situation.
In fact, both Betas and Omegas were rare, making up only about 2% to 5% of the population.
Moreover, Min Wenyi was extraordinarily talented, so there were very few occasions where she needed to create a “shipping buzz” with an Omega.
When Lu Yin posed this question, Yu Ran felt her entire body stiffen as if frozen in place.
Tong Xinxin, unaware of Yu Ran’s discomfort, sighed and said to Lu Yin, “Alright, Lu Yin, Yu Ran’s just a little assistant. There’s no need to ask her so much.”
Lu Yin rolled his eyes dismissively.
“Whatever. I’m going to rest.”
“Huh? But don’t you have a scene this afternoon?”
“I’m too tired today. Just tell the director I went to see a doctor. After all, I’m a delicate and sickly Omega.”
Without waiting for Tong Xinxin’s response, Lu Yin walked off the set.
Tong Xinxin hugged her arms, frowning as she muttered, “He’s so irresponsible.”
Yu Ran looked at her nervously and asked, “Did I upset him somehow?”
“It’s not your fault,” Tong Xinxin said helplessly. “Lu Yin is infamous for being difficult to deal with. He often skips filming, using his Omega status as an excuse. This isn’t the first time.”
Yu Ran watched Lu Yin’s departing figure, unsure of how to feel about the situation.
Lu Yin’s temper was probably due not only to his identity as an Omega but also to the constant attention and pampering he received.
After all, from the moment he decided to become a celebrity, Lu Yin was destined to be someone in the spotlight.
Yu Ran didn’t dwell on the matter much longer. After exchanging a few words with Tong Xinxin, they parted ways, though they did exchange contact information, which felt like a small step forward.
Min Wenyi, meanwhile, was playing the role of Lu Yin’s older sister in his childhood. Her character had drowned while trying to protect him—a sister forever preserved in memories.
For the sake of the plot, Min Wenyi was dressed in a school uniform skirt after her makeup session. Without the grandeur of her usual long gowns, she seemed much more restrained and youthful.
Her black hair was neatly coiled into a bun at the back of her head, and the brown checkered school uniform shaved years off her appearance, making her truly look like a high school senior.
When Yu Ran returned to the set, Min Wenyi commented, “This uniform looks pretty good, doesn’t it?”
Yu Ran nodded.
Min Wenyi pressed further. “Don’t you think so?”
Yu Ran finally lifted her head and gave Min Wenyi a once-over. She really did look stunning, though hadn’t she already nodded earlier?
The two exchanged glances. Seeing that Yu Ran still didn’t praise her outright, Min Wenyi snorted coldly and turned to leave.
What’s with everyone today?
Yu Ran clutched her water bottle, perplexed for the rest of the day.
As filming continued, Yu Ran spent her days trailing Min Wenyi around the set. Some shoots lasted only a couple of hours, while others stretched into full-day marathons.
Lu Yin occasionally shared scenes with Min Wenyi, but Yu Ran couldn’t shake the feeling that he was secretly watching her.
Was she imagining things?
What reason would a popular young star like Lu Yin have to pay attention to a mere assistant like her?
At first, it was just Lu Yin’s gaze that made her feel uneasy. But after nearly a week on set, Yu Ran noticed that other people were looking at her strangely too.
One day, as Yu Ran retrieved a bottle of mineral water from the vending machine for Min Wenyi, she overheard a hushed conversation from behind a nearby shelf.
And the whispering was unmistakable…
“Have you noticed Min Wenyi’s new assistant?”
“Yeah, I saw her. What about her?”
“She’s been trending in fanfiction circles lately.”
“What?!”
Yu Ran paused in thought. Min Wenyi’s new assistant—that was her, wasn’t it?
Trending?
In fanfiction circles?
What was going on?
Yu Ran crouched behind a pillar, straining to listen.
“You know Lu An, right? That famous fanfiction writer who always writes about Min Wenyi. Their latest story is about her and her assistant. It’s called, uh… oh, The Scheming Actress and Her Sweet Little Assistant!”
Thud!
Yu Ran’s hand trembled, and the bottles of water fell to the ground.
The two girls turned to look, their faces instantly turning awkward when they saw Yu Ran. Without saying a word, they quickly pulled each other away and fled.
What the heck was The Scheming Actress and Her Sweet Little Assistant?!
Yu Ran, her face pale, fumbled for her phone and searched for the title online.
The top result was a pinned post that stood out in bright red. Hands trembling, Yu Ran clicked on it.
She barely read the first line before she couldn’t bring herself to continue.
“Yu Ran is an Omega. Little did she expect to become the personal assistant to the aloof superstar Min Wenyi…”
WHAT?!?!
Who was spying on her life?!?!
Yu Ran felt her heart race as she stared at the author’s ID: Lu An. The profile picture was a black clown mask, eerie and unsettling.
The story was a serial, with eight chapters already posted. It seemed to be wildly popular in Min Wenyi’s fandom…
It was Yu Ran’s first time finding herself used as material for fanfiction. She mustered her courage to take a glance but couldn’t bear to continue reading after that.
Yes, the author was even a writer specializing in “royalty-themed” stories.
Yu Ran felt like she couldn’t breathe.
When will the new chapter come out? This is just not enough!
I’m ready to drive, and I’ve welded the car doors shut! No one’s getting out!
Checking in! Anlu’s writing is angelic, and the assistant character is so cute I just want to…!!!
The comments below the post were varied. Some celebrated Anlu’s new work, while others praised Yu Ran’s character for being sweet, charming, and irresistibly alluring.
When Min Wenyi finally received the bottle of water Yu Ran had bought, it had been half an hour since she left.
“Why did it take so long?”
Min Wenyi drank the water and said, “Once we finish the last scene, we can go home. Drive the car to the front entrance; we’ll leave directly after.”
Yu Ran hesitated before asking, “Boss, did you know… there’s fanfiction about us online?”
Min Wenyi paused mid-sip and replied calmly, “Yes, I know.”
Yu Ran was stunned.
Handing the half-empty bottle back to Yu Ran, Min Wenyi’s gaze briefly swept over Yu Ran’s neck. She said, “Those things aren’t worth worrying about.”
Watching Min Wenyi walk away, Yu Ran instinctively touched her neck.
Was Min Wenyi starting to suspect her?
On the drive home, Yu Ran drove slowly through the traffic. Min Wenyi sat in the back, casually scrolling through her phone.
Suddenly, a voice call came in—it was Lu An.
“Wenyi, are you home yet?”
Min Wenyi responded with a soft “Mm.”
Used to Min Wenyi’s cold tone, Lu An continued chatting, “That’s too bad. I wanted to have a meal with you sometime. It’s been so long since we last caught up.”
“Maybe next time. Let’s meet when there’s an opportunity.”
“Yeah. Just not sure where to find good food nearby.”
Leaning back in her seat, Min Wenyi didn’t seem interested in continuing the topic. She said, “Let’s talk about it later. I’m driving now. I’ll call you when I get home.”
“Okay…”
After ending the call, Yu Ran glanced at Min Wenyi through the rearview mirror. She asked hesitantly, “Boss, does Lu An like you?”
Min Wenyi didn’t reply. After a long silence, she said, “Let’s make some noodles tonight. I suddenly feel like eating them.”
Although puzzled by the sudden change of subject, Yu Ran agreed.
It was better not to pry into the boss’s private matters.
Dinner that evening was Beijing-style Zhajiang noodles. Min Wenyi ate an entire bowl and drank a large helping of soup before feeling satisfied enough to get ready for bed.
The recent work schedule had been exhausting, so Min Wenyi went upstairs early, leaving Yu Ran alone in the kitchen to clean up.
Having come home early, Yu Ran decided to tidy the house after cleaning the kitchen. Later, she sat at a small desk in the guest room, calculating her recent grocery expenses.
Just past midnight, a faint knocking sound woke her up.
She got up groggily, realizing she had fallen asleep at the desk while budgeting.
Knock, knock, knock—
The knocking continued. Who could it be at this hour?
Yu Ran put on a jacket and walked toward the door.
The living room was pitch dark, except for the faint glow seeping through the gap beneath the door. The persistent knocking on the security door continued.
A sense of unease crept into Yu Ran’s heart.
It must be her Omega instincts, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that whoever stood outside wasn’t there to collect utility payments.
Knock, knock, knock—
Suddenly, the knocking stopped.
Yu Ran held her breath and heard the faint beeping of someone trying to input the passcode on the lock!
Incorrect passcode. Please try again.
Incorrect passcode. Please try again.
Incorrect passcode. Please try again.
Peering through the peephole, Yu Ran saw a man in a black trench coat, wearing a black hat and mask, frantically trying different combinations on the lock.
“!!!”
Terrified, Yu Ran’s legs gave way, and she collapsed onto the floor.
“What’s wrong?”
The noise must have woken Min Wenyi. She stood at the second-floor railing, looking down at Yu Ran on the floor.
“Someone’s… outside…”
Hearing the continuous alerts from the lock, Yu Ran was too scared to think clearly.
Realizing the situation, Min Wenyi descended the stairs and crouched next to Yu Ran. Seeing her pale face and trembling lips, Min Wenyi grew concerned.
Without hesitation, Min Wenyi scooped Yu Ran into her arms.
Yu Ran was so light that Min Wenyi felt like she was holding a feather.
“Don’t be afraid,” Min Wenyi said, carrying Yu Ran upstairs and placing her gently on the bed. She leaned down and kissed Yu Ran’s forehead. “I’m here.”
Holding Yu Ran’s cold hands, Min Wenyi grabbed a pair of headphones from the nightstand and placed them over Yu Ran’s ears.
A melancholy melody filled Yu Ran’s ears, calming her gradually. After a few moments, she looked up at Min Wenyi.
Min Wenyi, having finished a phone call, sat beside her.
“Feeling better?”
Brushing Yu Ran’s damp forehead, Min Wenyi reassured her, “I’ve called security and the building management. They’ll handle it soon. Don’t worry.”
With a trembling voice, Yu Ran asked, “Boss, aren’t you scared?”
Even with a stranger trying so hard to break into her home, Min Wenyi seemed utterly calm.
“I’m used to it,” Min Wenyi said. “Though it doesn’t happen often, panicking would only make things worse.”
She removed one of Yu Ran’s earbuds and placed it in her own ear.
“Do you like it? This is my next single, set to release next month,” Min Wenyi said with a soft smile. “You’re the first to hear it.”
At that moment, Yu Ran could only hear the music—and her own heartbeat.
Looking at the dazed Yu Ran, Min Wenyi slowly leaned closer.
A warm kiss brushed Yu Ran’s nose, and she felt like her breath was stolen away.
She realized she must look a mess right now.
