As a Scummy Omega, I Ran Away with the Baby - Chapter 4
Bai Qingqiu realized the little Alpha beside her was in a low mood. This wasn’t just fatigue—no matter how exhausted Gu Yining was in the past, she had never looked this lifeless.
How should she put it?
Normally, Gu Yining was like a little sparrow powered by solar panels, chirping and bouncing around all day.
Now, she was more like an empty shell, a walking corpse without a soul, as if she had lost interest in everything—or rather, as if her soul wasn’t even here.
Bai Qingqiu tightened her grip on the blanket, feeling inexplicably helpless. How could Gu Yining be like this? Just moments ago, when she heard there were dumplings, hadn’t she looked so happy?
After hesitating for a long while, Bai Qingqiu finally couldn’t hold back and spoke softly, gazing at the tense line of her back.
“Gu Yining.”
“Mhm.” Gu Yining’s voice was muffled. She stayed curled up under the covers, motionless, but the cords in her neck stood out, as if she was holding something down with great effort.
“Did… something happen at today’s press conference? Did someone give you a hard time?”
Bai Qingqiu lowered her voice further, reaching out to pull her into her arms. Gu Yining was half a head taller than her, which usually made hugging her feel a little awkward. But now, with Gu Yining curled up so tightly, she fit perfectly in her embrace.
Her body, normally soft and warm, was now rigid with tension—like a hedgehog bristling with spines, joints sharp and unyielding.
Bai Qingqiu’s eyes softened with both pity and helplessness. She exhaled, slid her hand down her shoulder, and tried to lace their fingers together—only to find a tightly clenched fist.
“No.”
Gu Yining’s reply was hard and clipped.
Since she clearly didn’t want to talk, forcing it would do no good. Better to wait until she was less guarded and willing to confide in her. Thinking this, Bai Qingqiu let it go. She rested quietly against her back, choosing patience, and shared the silence with her.
Their bedroom was the most spacious room in the villa. At this hour, it was tranquil and hushed, broken only by the faint sound of water trickling from the glass wall fountain outside the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Bai Qingqiu had never been a good sleeper. The water feature had been installed on Gu Yining’s suggestion, who claimed the white noise was supposed to help.
But nothing soothed her quite like the sound of Gu Yining’s heartbeat.
The gentle slope of her back pressed against her cheek was warm and reassuring. Thump, thump—the steady rhythm seeped through her ear and into her chest, smoothing out even the tightest knots of anxiety.
Gu Yining knew of her little quirk and once teased her: with that hobby, she should’ve become a cardiologist. But Bai Qingqiu had no interest in anyone else’s heartbeat.
Even standing too close to strangers made her break out in goosebumps.
Only those she trusted, those she allowed near, could be this close to her. That was part of why she had stayed with Gu Yining for over four years.
“Bai Qingqiu.”
Her name, spoken softly, made her skin vibrate faintly where her cheek pressed against Gu Yining.
“Mm?”
“Do you love me?”
She had asked this countless times. And Bai Qingqiu had answered countless times.
“I do.”
The words came without a thought.
But before she could breathe, she was suddenly pushed back onto the bed. Gu Yining loomed above her, eyes shimmering with stubborn tears, rimmed red. The scent of roses surged thickly around her, far stronger than ever before.
So—the little Alpha must have entered her susceptibility period.
Bai Qingqiu tilted her chin, glancing at the gland at the pale, slender curve of her neck. She was about to reach up to check for fever, when Gu Yining caught her wrist and pinned both hands firmly down.
She rarely acted this domineering.
A faint humiliation burned at being restrained, and Bai Qingqiu pressed her lips together in displeasure. But remembering she was in her susceptibility period, she chose not to protest, lowering her gaze as if she hadn’t noticed.
It was a silent form of permission.
Gu Yining sensed it too—and bent down to kiss her.
The pheromones of an Alpha in heat were nothing like usual. Overwhelmed, Bai Qingqiu’s Omega body responded instinctively, heating up. She tried to speak, but her mouth was sealed, her breath stolen by the forceful invasion of pheromone and tongue, devouring what little air was left.
Every breath was filled with the cloying intensity of roses.
“Gu Yining!”
Bai Qingqiu managed to gasp out those two words. After that, she knew nothing more.
Magnolia and rose twined together, saturating the room in their entanglement.

The woman before her slept with one arm under her head, long black hair tumbling in messy waves, her shoulders pale and smooth, almost sinful in their allure.
Fresh from the shower, Gu Yining stopped in her tracks, steam clinging to her skin. She bent over, pulled the blanket up over her, and gently tucked stray strands of hair behind her ear, careful not to brush her cheek.
When it was done, she turned away with a self-mocking smile.
Hadn’t she already decided to ask about Bai Qingqiu’s first love from college?
So why hadn’t she?
Gu Yining blinked and slowly opened her palm toward Bai Qingqiu’s sleeping figure, closing her hand around nothing. But in her mind, she could still feel the soft warmth of her skin, lingering in her grasp.
When she pinned her wrist earlier—why hadn’t Bai Qingqiu pulled away?
She hated being controlled more than anyone.
If she had resisted, even slightly, Gu Yining might have found the courage to tear open this fragile, soap-bubble peace.
She acted cheerful, silly, playful—because she knew Bai Qingqiu liked it. She was willing to play the role of the carefree girlfriend if it made her happy. She could even accept not being loved as much.
But if this so-called love was nothing more than a projection of someone else…
Then what was left worth holding on to?
Gu Yining exhaled a quiet sigh. Forcing herself to look away, she gripped the corner of the blanket hard beneath her robe.

By the time Bai Qingqiu woke, the space beside her was empty. She pushed herself up slowly, a hollow ache spreading in her chest.
It took her groggy morning mind a long time to recall what had happened the night before.
She had waited for Gu Yining in the living room until late at night, wanting to see her reaction to the school drama she’d arranged especially for her. But when Gu Yining came home, her face had been dark.
Then, before sleep, she had entered susceptibility.
Bai Qingqiu lifted her sore arm, speechless for a while. This—this was why she loathed the unnatural biology of Alphas and Omegas.
She had given her assistant orders to let Gu Yining take a few days off. Most likely, she was downstairs now, having breakfast.
Calming her thoughts, Bai Qingqiu washed up slowly, then made her way to the dining room.
But the long, luxurious table was empty. The porridge in the center still steamed, fresh from Aunt Han’s careful preparation.
“Aunt Han, where’s Gu Yining?”
Bai Qingqiu frowned.
“Miss Gu finished her porridge and went out. Said she wanted some fresh air.” Aunt Han placed down a plate of fried dough sticks as she spoke.
Out? During her susceptibility period?
Reckless.
Bai Qingqiu pressed her lips tightly in disapproval.

Gu Yining wasn’t out for a stroll. That was a lie.
She had driven to the next street, sitting slouched in the driver’s seat, messaging an old roommate who had stayed on at the university, asking for Bei Nanyan’s contact information.
Even if it killed her, she needed to know the truth.
Face tight, she typed into the chat box:
[Thanks. I’ll treat you to a meal sometime.]
Bei Nanyan.
Staring at the phone number on her screen, Gu Yining drew several deep breaths. Her finger trembled as she long-pressed to copy it.
