Episode 2: The Easiest Life Possible
The first one to appear was a handsome young man with refined features—someone who fit the image of a true hero.
He looked to be in his late teens or around twenty. He was clad in platinum-like armor.
“That’s Holy King Regnas. He’s the king of Glowarth, the nation destined to become the most prosperous in this world. Of course, you won’t reincarnate directly into this form. In every life, you always start as a baby. …So, what do you think?”
“That’s quite the generous offer right from the start. But I don’t intend to be a king.”
“Oh? And why not?”
“Being a king comes with hardships. In exchange for honor, you lose your freedom.”
“Then shall we see the next one?”
At Ariana’s murmur, Regnas’ image moved to the edge of the white floor and became faint and translucent.
“I thought it would disappear?”
“It would, normally. But just in case you change your mind and think, ‘Maybe that one was better,’ I’ve decided to keep any summoned choice visible.”
“That’s overly generous.”
If the soul had a face, he would’ve been smiling wryly.
Ariana raised her hand once more. This time, pink lightning dropped onto the floor—just as flashy as before.
The next figure to appear was a beautiful woman with silver hair and a striking blue robe.
“What the…?”
“Her name is Lilica. One of the world’s top-tier saints and the right hand of Sword Saint Marcellus. By the way, Marcellus is one of the most crucial figures in the world I manage. You could say he’s the protagonist.”
“I’ll pass.”
“Oh, but it’s a chance to be a beautiful woman?”
“I don’t want a TS (or Gender Bender) reincarnation. And besides, if I ended up that beautiful, I’d constantly be worrying about everything. Depending on my actions, I might even end up destroying a country.”
“TS ? I’m not sure what that means, but… Have you seen a case like that before? Well then, next.”
Ariana muttered with slight disappointment and summoned another figure.
This time, it was a fresh green glow—different in atmosphere from the previous two.
When the light faded, a middle-aged man in a jet-black jacket stood there. Unlike the others, he had an air of darkness around him.
“This is Gerald, the Shadow King of the largest thief guild. Even in my world, the underworld is overflowing with shady figures. And he’s at the top. If you’re looking for an easy life, what do you think?”
“That kind of ‘ease’ is temporary. This man has the aura of death about him. He’s the type you should stay far away from—let alone reincarnate into. Show me someone more ordinary.”
The angel gave a wry smile. But she continued presenting life after life to the man.
Status, beauty, wealth, fame, supernatural power…
Each figure brought forth by the gacha had something people would envy in excess.
It was like drawing a jackpot every time—but for the man, it was starting to feel unsettling. He was on the verge of saying “let’s stop here” when it happened.
He’d lost count of how many tries it had been when black lightning struck the white floor.
Compared to before, the effects were plain. This difference gave the soul a subtle sense of discomfort.
A man with black hair that you could find anywhere appeared. He was wearing a black jacket.
He was tall, with sharp, narrow eyes—not bad-looking. But he was not nearly as striking as the earlier choices.
“This one’s a miss. Moving on—”
“Wait. Who is this man?”
Ariana was surprised he stopped her. But she began to explain matter-of-factly.
“Atlas von Lothian. The eldest son of House Lothian, a prominent marquis family. In the world I manage, he’s the first obstacle the protagonist faces. That’s about the extent of it.”
“What do you mean by ‘first obstacle’?”
“He’s a small-time villain noble. Think of him as the story’s opening lubricant to help things move along.”
Apparently, this was a character the angel didn’t really want to recommend.
But the soul began to consider it.
“What if he doesn’t become a villain?”
“Then he’ll just be a dull man with nothing to him. Atlas is the eldest son, but his younger brother turns out to be extremely capable. So he won’t even inherit the house. He’d probably live a lonely, quiet life and die that way.”
“A man with nothing.”
For some reason, that phrase drew the soul in.
And within seconds, he made his decision.
“This one’s fine.”
“Alright, then next—eh?”
“This man. I’ll go with Atlas von Lothian.”
“Oh my! Are you sure? He’s a villain, destined to be defeated by the protagonist and meet a tragic end.”
The soul’s flame wavered more strongly than before. The man’s will was firm.
“Then I just won’t be a villain.”
“That’s true, but… you’re fine with being a boring man?”
“That’s perfectly fine.”
“I see… Well, maybe this will turn out to be interesting.”
“What do you mean?”
“Oh, nothing. Just thinking out loud. Well then, enough chatter.”
One by one, the figures summoned by the gacha began to fade away.
The angel returned to the front of her throne and turned back quietly. She closed her eyes. And with a gesture like beckoning farewell, she spoke her parting words.
“You will now be born into the new world created by our Supreme God, as Atlas von Lothian.
Rejoice. Be angry. Laugh. Cry.
All is your freedom.
Never forget that freedom is a gift granted by the gods.
May your new life be blessed.”
As the angel’s voice faded, something began.
Darkness surrounded everything.
He was being pulled away at a tremendous speed.
The soul was heading toward a new body.
(Don’t become a villain. If I just do that, I should be able to live a simple, peaceful life.)
He thought once more.
His first life, wasted in laziness and self-loathing.
His second life, filled only with brutal battles and no joy.
‘At the very least, I’ll try to make my third one better.’
He truly believed… he had made the right choice.
