Episode 17: Chewing

Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch.

I eat the giant bird I defeated. As the sound “munch munch” suggests, I’m currently chewing.

The reason? The bird was too big. Just dissolving it normally would take too long.

So now, I’m enthusiastically chewing it up. First, I shape my body into a blade to cut off part of the bird, then absorb it into my body. Inside, I form two blades, which I use to slice it up by moving them up and down.

This is the Slime way of chewing. I don’t know if other slimes do it, though. Actually, most slimes other than the Rough Stone Slime lineage can’t transform into sharp shapes like this, so they probably can’t.

After finishing eating, I put my hands together in thanks. I extended whips from both sides and made them look like arms. Then I took a deep breath. Chewing took quite a bit of energy. It’s like a full-body workout.

“(…Time to find the next prey.)”

After a short rest, I stood up. Both my |Mana| and stamina were still plentiful. I’ll try to up my <Level> more by the end of today.

After fighting several more magical beasts, my <Level>  reached 29. My skills haven’t changed, but I think my fighting style has become more refined. I’ve grown accustomed to the Jewel Weapon Slime body and can now unleash skills in quick succession.

“(Time to find a place to sleep.)”

It’s already getting late, the time when crows would start cawing. I’ll wrap up today’s hunt around here.

“(Oh, this spot looks good.)”

I found a tree root about the same size as where I slept yesterday. As I tried to crawl under it, I noticed something.

“(I can’t fit… Oh yeah, I’ve gotten bigger after {Evolving}…)”

An unexpected side effect of {Evolution}. Now I need to find a place big enough to hide my new, balance-ball-sized body.

For a moment, I thought maybe I could just sleep outside since I can’t be hurt anyway. But I quickly dismissed that idea. Nocturnal beasts might gather and disturb my sleep, and if one could break through my defense, it would be the end.

“(Isn’t there a good spot somewhere?)”

I wandered around the forest. The sound of a slime moving is more like a slithering than a tap-tap. We move by dragging our bodies.

—Oh, that spot might work.

I noticed a small hill with a cave underneath it. Since it was getting dark, I headed towards the entrance a bit quicker.

“(Excuse me.)”

As soon as I entered, three goblins attacked. Apparently, this was their home.

‘I don’t want to fight. Could you let me stay just for the night?’

“””Gogyagya! (Dinner’s here!)”””

“(Well, that’s a no.)”

I tried to convey that I didn’t want to fight using my [Communication] skill, but the goblins attacked anyway, beating me with their clubs. I thought about avoiding the fight since the smell of bl00d would attract other beasts, but…

Well, if I eat them all after defeating them, it should be fine.

“([Escape], [Slash].)”

I took some distance from the goblins, whose attacks didn’t even deal one damage, and quickly swung my blade down. Goblin A’s head was split vertically, and it died instantly.

“([Jump], [Jump].)”

Before the other goblins could register their comrade’s death, I jumped up. The ceiling of the cave was low, and even with my leaping power, I reached it. Then I leaped again, falling rapidly.

Combining this with my [Crushing] skill, Goblin B was crushed to death without even a scream. Without a moment’s delay, I slashed at Goblin C next to it.

“([Slash]!)”

Before the dazed goblin could raise its defense, my sword blade gouged its stomach. Its knees buckled, and it would never stand again.

“(Well, that’s that.)”

I fought several times during the day, but for a Greater Beast like me, Lesser Beasts aren’t much of a challenge. I can take them down easily. That’s the difference in rank between us.

Afterward, I consumed the goblins with my [Dissolution Liquid], leaving nothing behind. I even dissolved the bloodstains along with the ground, leaving no trace. Not even a top detective would find a clue after my thorough concealment.

Then, I found a perfectly sized nook at the back of the cave and went to sleep.
