Banishment is Fine: As a Genius Saint, I Can Shine Anywhere. - Chapter 4
“The previous Chief Saintess recognized that her power was weakening and she requested to step down. It’s a common reason for retirement. She personally recommended me as her successor.”
Even when Meteora first arrived at the Central Temple eight years ago, her power as a saintess was already exceptional. Because of this, many had assumed for years that she would eventually take the role of Chief Saintess.
The previous Chief Saintess had also placed her hopes in Meteora. When she felt it was time to retire, she formally recommended her to the clergy as her successor.
“Where is the former Chief Saintess now? Is she serving in a local temple like Lady Chuli?”
“No, she retired to get married. Her power had diminished too quickly, making it difficult for her to continue working, even in a regional post.”
“Saintess powers can fade that fast? Lady Chuli seems to have maintained hers just fine.”
Chuli gave a small smile and shook her head.
“It’s actually quite common. Many saintesses lose most of their power once they enter their late twenties. Around twenty percent of us retain at least half of our peak strength, and those individuals are usually assigned to regional temples. I fall into that category.”
“Only twenty percent retain their power? I thought it would be more than that.”
“It’s not often talked about. However, Lady Meteora’s abilities are truly extraordinary. Official records show that a saintess with such immense power is only born once every two hundred years. This time, that rare individual happens to be you.”
“Huh. A once-in-two-centuries talent, huh? No wonder you’re so incredible.”
Lionel grinned, but Meteora simply shrugged.
“Even if I am, there’s a limit. I still can’t repair the stakes, after all. If anything, I wish I had that kind of power.”
“Come on, now. That’s way beyond what any human should be capable of.”
Lionel hurriedly shook his head, and Chuli also responded with a serious expression.
“Lady Meteora, excessive power can distort a person’s life. You are already an exceptional saintess as you are. To desire more would be greedy.”
“…You’re right, Lady Chuli.”
Meteora inclined her head slightly. As a younger saintess, she knew it was wise to heed the advice of her senior.
“That said, I do understand how you feel. If I could repair the stakes myself, we wouldn’t be struggling like this.”
Chuli let out a sigh, looking equally frustrated.
“Oh my, I seem to have spoken too casually. Please forgive my rudeness.”
“Not at all, Lady Chuli. Please speak freely with us. It’s much more comfortable that way.”
“Exactly. This isn’t the Central Temple, where you have to tiptoe around the higher-ups.”
Lionel nodded in agreement with Meteora and Chuli smiled warmly.
“You’re right…, I’ve never really had anyone to casually talk to like this. It feels refreshing.”
“In regional temples, staff numbers are limited, and while the locals revere saintesses, they also tend to keep their distance.”
Meteora’s words made Chuli lean forward in agreement.
“Exactly! Lady Meteora, I’m glad you’re such an easygoing person. Though I must seem like a boring old woman to you.”
“Not at all. It’s rare to have the opportunity to speak with a senior saintess. I’m truly grateful for this conversation.”
Unlike the saintesses of the Fifth Regional Temple—who had fled to the Central Temple the moment monsters attacked—Chuli had a strong sense of duty. Meteora could tell that they would get along well in the future.
They both shared the same commitment: to serve as saintesses for the sake of their country.
“Still, with not just the stakes but also these magic pigeons to worry about… Perhaps we should inform the Central Temple—”
—Just as Lionel was about to finish his sentence…
