- Chapter 11 - Simply Wanting to Dismiss
Li Feng had never seen Li Xuanyue behave so obediently before.
Like a child who had done something wrong, she stood there quietly, neither raising her head nor making a sound.
It made one reluctant to even scold her.
Li Feng took a deep breath.
In the end, she couldn’t suppress the anger in her heart and questioned her.
“I heard you plan to dismiss all the consorts and attendants in your palace?”
Though phrased as a question, Li Feng’s words carried clear dissatisfaction and fury toward this decision.
When Li Xuanyue had first demanded these consorts, she had been desperate to have them immediately.
Even Li Feng, as her mother and sovereign, had been somewhat helpless against her whims.
But now, she wanted to dismiss them all.
Sometimes, Li Feng truly wished she could take a knife and split open her daughter’s head to see what was going on inside.
“Speak. Which young master from the Hundred Clans has caught your eye this time?”
Li Feng’s exasperation stemmed entirely from Li Xuanyue’s lack of ambition.
Her daughter how could she, as a mother and ruler, not understand?
She must have promised something to some young lord from the Hundred Clans. Otherwise, why would she suddenly want to dismiss all the consorts and attendants in her palace?
“No one!”
Li Xuanyue answered swiftly.
“Hmm?”
Li Feng raised an eyebrow, wondering if she had misheard.
“Mother, I haven’t taken a liking to anyone.”
Li Xuanyue replied honestly, “I simply want to dismiss them.”
Her words only deepened Li Feng’s confusion.
She didn’t believe her daughter could be so benevolent.
“There’s no need to hide things from me.”
Li Feng assumed her daughter feared punishment and waved a hand dismissively. “I’m not unreasonable. If you’ve truly set your heart on someone, just bring them back. There’s no need to disband your entire harem for their sake.”
Li Xuanyue knew that no matter what she said now, Li Feng wouldn’t believe her.
So she decided to reveal the truth directly her difficulty in conceiving an heir.
“Mother, I’m not joking.”
She spoke solemnly, “I mean every word.”
“Given my current condition, keeping them in the palace would be unfair to them. It’s better to let them go, allowing them to find happiness elsewhere. That, in itself, is an act of kindness.”
This was the conclusion she had reached after careful consideration the night before.
First, she wanted to become a diligent Phoenix Clan princess, earning the people’s admiration.
Second, among her consorts and attendants were spies planted by Li Qinghe.
Having been reborn, how could she allow them to continue monitoring her within her own palace?
This was the perfect opportunity to have her own people watch in secret.
To uncover what Li Qinghe’s agents still intended to do.
Li Feng’s expression darkened. “Does your father know about this?”
Difficulty in conceiving an heir was no small matter.
Throughout history, the Phoenix sovereigns valued not just strength and capability, but most importantly, the continuation of their lineage.
If this were to spread, it would undoubtedly cause upheaval across the entire Phoenix Clan.
Who would entrust the throne to a princess who could scarcely bear an heir?
Li Feng was no exception.
“Your daughter has already instructed Imperial Physician Fang and the other consorts to keep it confidential,” Li Xuanyue said hesitantly. “The Imperial Consort should not find out.”
“Since you’ve already made up your mind, this Empress Mother won’t dissuade you further.”
Li Feng spoke lightly, “However, the secrecy of this matter.”
With just Li Xuanyue’s few words, Li Feng found it hard to believe.
After Li Xuanyue left privately, she would undoubtedly summon Imperial Physician Fang for a thorough inquiry.
“Then I’ll leave the elders and ministers to you, Empress Mother.”
Handling the elders and ministers alone would be nearly impossible for her.
But if Li Feng intervened, the situation would be entirely different.
As the ruler of the clan, whatever she decreed, the elders and ministers wouldn’t dare oppose.
“Your Highness, isn’t this sacrifice too great?”
Yin Xin asked worriedly, “What if you lose your position as Crown Princess because of this? Wouldn’t the loss outweigh the gain?”
Li Xuanyue glanced sideways at Yin Xin, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”
“Yin Xin, sometimes you must look beyond the surface and consider the long-term implications.”
At present, everything seemed unfavorable to her.
But without taking this step, how could she lure the pawns of her dear sister into the trap she had laid?
“Come, accompany me to the pavilion across for a rest.”
Having lived a second life, Li Xuanyue’s temperament had grown much calmer.
Unlike her previous life, where she was quick to anger.
The rapid deterioration of the poison in her body was precisely due to her fits of rage.
“Oh? Isn’t that Consort Jun ahead? Why is he here?”
Following Yin Xin’s gaze,
Li Xuanyue indeed saw a man dressed in white robes slowly approaching from the rock garden, accompanied by guards.
After everyone left Fenghe Hall earlier, Consort Jun hadn’t returned to his palace with the other four consorts.
Instead, he had his trusted aide accompany him for a stroll around the rock garden.
Unexpectedly, his walk led him to the pavilion where Li Xuanyue had just settled.
He paused, thought for a moment, and then approached the pavilion with his aide.
“Your servant greets Her Highness the Princess.”
Since he had come this far, Li Xuanyue couldn’t pretend not to see him.
“Sit.”
She waved casually.
Neither overly warm nor cold,
her demeanor was as if she were addressing an ordinary person.
Soon, a maid brought hot tea, serving each of them a cup placed before them.
“Early spring in February is still chilly. Consort Jun, if you have no further engagements after your stroll, return to your palace early to rest and avoid catching cold.”
“As you command!”
Consort Jun appeared compliant.
He neither refuted Li Xuanyue’s words nor showed any inclination for further conversation.
His manner was quite aloof.
The two sat in the pavilion, drinking tea in silence.
“Your Highness, this servant has learned that after the Eldest Princess was summoned by the Phoenix Emperor, she is now having tea with Consort Jun in the pavilion at the rear garden.”
In Chaoren Hall, Ruyue, having gathered the information, hurried to report without delay.
“Tea?”
Li Qinghe narrowed her eyes, seemingly forming a plan.
“Imperial Physician Fang, now you can tell this Princess where exactly my sister is unwell, can’t you?”
Imperial Physician Fang had visited Phoenix Harmony Hall, but ever since being summoned by her, he had remained tight-lipped.
Could he have betrayed her?
Imperial Physician Fang felt a chill run down his spine under Li Qinghe’s icy gaze.
If possible, he wouldn’t have wanted to get involved in this matter at all.
Yet Li Xuanyue’s threatening words kept echoing in his ears.
His own death wouldn’t matter, but the lives of his wife, children, and elderly mother were still in Li Xuanyue’s hands.
He didn’t dare take the risk.
With no other choice, he could only follow the plan Li Xuanyue had previously laid out for him.
