- Chapter 15 - They Would Never Be Together
“After three months of reflection in Chaoren Hall, I have made up my mind. Lin Shijun, you should no longer come to see me in the future.”
“Your elder sister will eventually take you back. From now on, if you need anything or encounter any difficulties, just seek out Ruyue. I will have her arrange everything for you.”
With these words, Li Qinghe had no intention of continuing the conversation with Lin Yue.
She turned and left with Ruyue in tow.
Meanwhile, Lin Yue stood there, his face deathly pale, trembling like a withered leaf in the wind.
Was Princess Qinghe blaming him with those words?
How could that be?
She knew better than anyone the nature of his relationship with the Eldest Princess.
They would never be together.
Why, then, would she say something so chilling to him?
“Your Highness, isn’t this treatment of Lin Shijun a bit too harsh?” Ruyue couldn’t help but voice her concern.
Previously, Lin Shijun had provided them with valuable information from the Eldest Princess.
Now that he had outlived his usefulness,
they were casting him aside without a second thought. No matter how she looked at it, their actions felt unjust.
Li Qinghe paused mid-step.
She turned her head slightly to look at Ruyue.
“Are you questioning me?”
Her ambiguous tone carried an unmistakable coldness and displeasure.
It was clear that Ruyue’s words had provoked her dissatisfaction.
Ruyue shivered under Li Qinghe’s icy gaze.
Only then did she realize she had spoken out of turn in front of her mistress. Her heart filled with dread as she quickly knelt beside Li Qinghe, bowing her head.
“This servant dares not.”
Li Qinghe did not respond immediately. Instead, she studied Ruyue intently for several seconds.
Those few seconds felt like an eternity to Ruyue, as if she were sitting on pins and needles.
She wished she could drop dead on the spot.
After what felt like an eternity, Li Qinghe finally spoke slowly, “Ruyue, you are my person now. I do not wish to hear such words from you again in the future. Do you understand?”
She was no benevolent ruler. When pushed, she could even turn against herself.
Let alone a mere maid.
Ruyue keenly sensed the killing intent emanating from Li Qinghe and nodded obediently.
“Yes, this servant will remember.”
Today, she had indeed been too careless.
Assuming Li Qinghe was still the same as before, she had spoken without restraint.
–
Meanwhile, Lang Hua, bored in his palace, decided to take a stroll in the imperial gardens with his personal guard.
Unexpectedly, as they reached the lotus pond, they witnessed Ruyue kneeling before Li Qinghe in the distance.
“Princess Qinghe seems to be reprimanding her personal maid?”
The one who spoke was Feng Yi, Lang Hua’s trusted aide.
Standing as tall as Lang Hua and dressed in a guard’s uniform, though not as strikingly handsome, his imposing stature alone conveyed a sense of security.
“My lord, should we go and greet the princess?”
As he asked, Feng Yi carefully observed Lang Hua’s expression.
If there was even a hint of reluctance in his eyes,
they would take another path.
“No need!”
Lang Hua glanced in Li Qinghe’s direction and raised his hand dismissively.
Because Li Qinghe was already walking toward them.
Even if they wanted to avoid her now, it was too late.
“Lang Shijun.”
Encountering Lord Lang in the imperial gardens was somewhat unexpected for Li Qinghe.
Yet since they had crossed paths, it was only natural for her to greet him lest she appear flustered.
“Princess Qinghe.”
Lang Hua raised a brow, returning the gesture with a slight nod.
Truth be told, he disliked this princess.
The way she looked at people was deeply unsettling, as if a venomous serpent were slithering behind one’s back, sending chills down the spine.
“Lord Lang, have you just arrived in the gardens?” Li Qinghe stepped forward with an invitation. “Would you care to accompany me to Fenghe Palace to visit my elder sister?”
Three months had passed since their last meeting, and she had heard her dear sister’s health was deteriorating by the day.
Since she was already out today, why not verify whether the rumors relayed by Ruyue were true that the illness had indeed taken a severe turn?
“How thoughtful of you, Princess Qinghe.”
Lang Hua rejected her without hesitation. “Her Highness is likely resting at this hour. I wouldn’t wish to disturb her.”
The implication was clear: Go if you must, but leave me out of it.
He had no desire to stand awkwardly in front of Princess Xuanyue.
Li Qinghe hadn’t expected such a blunt refusal.
Her smile stiffened before she slowly replied, “So, Lord Lang has just returned from my sister’s side?”
Otherwise, how would he know Li Xuanyue was still resting?
Since when had she become so lethargic?
“Not at all.”
Lang Hua could easily guess what she was thinking and answered briskly, “I merely deduced based on Her Highness’s usual resting schedule.”
“Whether she is truly resting or not, Princess Qinghe may see for herself.”
Why drag me into this?
Are we even acquainted?
Li Qinghe’s forced smile nearly cracked. Suppressing her anger, she replied evenly, “In that case, I shall visit my sister later. For now, I’ll stroll through the gardens with Lord Lang.”
There were, after all, a few matters she wished to discuss with him.
“Please, don’t.…”
Before she could finish, Lang Hua cut her off.
“The gardens are vast, and Your Highness seems eager to explore. I wouldn’t wish to intrude on your enjoyment. I shall retire to the pavilion ahead instead. Farewell.”
Without waiting for her response, Lang Hua strode toward the pavilion with his trusted aide in tow.
Li Qinghe’s dark eyes gleamed with venom, her face flushing with rage at his dismissive attitude.
The feeling of being unwelcome transported her back three years, to the days she had spent with her father in Taihe Palace.
Back then, she hadn’t understood why he would rage and smash things within those walls.
Not until the day she peered over the palace walls and saw the exalted Empress, clad in crimson phoenix robes, advancing toward the Emperor under the gaze of thousands.
Only then did she grasp why her father had lost his mind.
One was the revered Empress, worshipped by all; the other, a disgraced consort, scorned by the masses.
Such a staggering disparity would drive anyone to madness.
And now, Lord Lang had just made her relive that humiliation.
“Your Highness, where shall we go next?” Ruyue ventured cautiously.
If the elder princess was still resting, they would likely be left waiting in vain.
Yet returning empty handed was not an option Li Qinghe would accept.
“Is Lord Wen still at Fanghua Palace?”
Li Qinghe was angry, but she hadn’t forgotten what she needed to do next.
“Send someone to summon him here secretly. Tell him I have matters to discuss with him.”
Since Li Xuanyue was still resting,
she would start with those closest to her.
This Lord Wen was a suitable choice.
Hadn’t he once admired her?
If so, she would give him a chance to prove himself.
