- Chapter 20 - Each More Unapproachable Than the Last
In the past, the consorts in Li Xuanyue’s palace would grovel with gratitude whenever they received gifts from her, allowing Li Qinghe to reap considerable benefits.
For this reason, she had chosen the same method to win the favor of these five consorts, hoping to leave a good impression on them.
Yet, to her surprise, Li Xuanyue’s five consorts proved to be increasingly difficult to approach.
Was her method wrong?
“Princess, since Lord Sugi is so ungrateful, perhaps we should leave,” Ruyue whispered into Li Qinghe’s ear.
In her eyes, the princess had already shown them great honor by personally delivering gifts.
And now they dared to refuse?
Did they not realize how far beneath her they were?
Li Qinghe shot Ruyue a glance, clearly signaling her to shut up.
Ruyue immediately straightened up and sealed her lips.
“Lord Sugi, are you afraid that accepting my gift will incur my sister’s displeasure?”
After much deliberation, Li Qinghe finally settled on this explanation.
“There was indeed some misunderstanding regarding Lord Wen, but I assure you, our relationship was entirely innocent.”
Her words subtly implied that Li Xuanyue was petty that despite knowing nothing improper had occurred between her and Lord Wen, she had still slandered them.
“Moreover, you must be aware that my sister has been unwell lately, always secluded in Fenghe Hall. It’s only natural for her thoughts to grow paranoid.”
“As her younger sister, I can understand, but poor Lord Wen.”
“Poor him how?”
The moment Li Qinghe finished speaking, Li Xuanyue’s weak but sharp voice echoed from outside Wutong Hall.
“Greetings, Your Highness.”
Sugi and the others hurriedly bowed.
Li Qinghe stiffened before rising to her feet.
“Sister!”
Li Xuanyue ignored her, allowing Yinyin to support her as she took the seat of honor.
Though her face was pale, her eyes burned with vitality like a final resurgence before the end.
“Lord Sugi, what were you discussing with Princess Qinghe just now?”
Li Xuanyue feigned ignorance.
She had known Li Qinghe’s intentions the moment she set out to deliver gifts to her consorts.
This was a tactic she had already experienced in her past life.
Back then, every consort in her palace had groveled before Li Qinghe, eventually betraying her and pledging their loyalty to the younger princess.
To think that even in this life, her methods remained unchanged.
Had her previous consorts spoiled her so thoroughly that she thought she could continue unchecked?
She would soon learn whether Li Xuanyue would allow it.
Sugi glanced at Li Qinghe. “Princess Qinghe said she had prepared a gift for me.”
“Oh?”
Li Xuanyue’s interest was instantly piqued.
Her gaze locked onto the gift in Ruyue’s hands.
“Then bring it here at once. Let me see it properly.”
She was eager to discover just how precious this “gift” from her dear sister truly was.
Before Yue could step back, Xiao Han swiftly snatched the exquisitely wrapped gift box from her hands.
“Heavenly Mountain Snow Lotus?”
Li Xuan Yue frowned, “This is indeed a rare and precious gift.”
Her younger sister was certainly willing to spare no expense.
“Lord Zhōng, since this is Princess Qing He’s kind gesture, you may accept it.”
Although this item wasn’t uncommon, it wasn’t easily obtained. The fact that Li Qing He was willing to part with it proved she must have something even better in her possession.
“As you command!”
Since Li Xuan Yue had given Zhōng He this opportunity, he naturally wouldn’t refuse. It would be perfect for his mother’s medicinal needs to nourish her health.
“Now that the matter of the gift is settled, shouldn’t we move on to discussing other things?”
With just a few words, Li Xuan Yue brushed aside Li Qing He’s gift-giving intentions: “Qing He, you mentioned pitying Lord Wen earlier? What exactly do you pity him for?”
“Do you think my actions were inappropriate?”
Li Xuan Yue’s words hung over Li Qing He’s head like a sharp blade, causing her face to pale.
She never dreamed that one day her backhanded remarks about Li Xuan Yue would be caught by the princess herself. It felt as embarrassing as being seen naked, making her extremely uncomfortable.
“No, elder sister!” Li Qing He gritted her teeth and quickly denied it.
The princess’s air of superiority she had displayed before Zhōng He vanished instantly, replaced by sheer nervousness.
“Lord Wen failed to recognize his proper position. The punishment from elder sister was well-deserved.”
“Yet the tone I heard earlier seemed to accuse me of being petty.”
Li Xuan Yue wasn’t about to let her off so easily, pressing further.
“Do you think these three months of illness have made me foolish, confined in Feng He Palace?”
To speak ill of her in front of her own husband did she really think Li Xuan Yue would remain as oblivious as in her past life, allowing such slander?
Li Qing He panicked, bewildered by Li Xuan Yue’s sudden aggressiveness. Previously, they had always maintained a sisterly bond, with Li Qing He speaking to her respectfully, even with a hint of flattery, careful not to upset her. But now, her words cut like knives.
Had three months of illness changed her temperament so drastically?
“Also, you’ve been out of seclusion for several days now, haven’t you?”
Seeing her silence, Li Xuan Yue continued leisurely, regardless of her thoughts. “Instead of visiting your elder sister first upon your release, you chose to bring gifts to my consorts. Do you consider them more important than me?”
Li Qing He jerked her head up. “That’s not true!”
She explained, “Sister, you misunderstand. The reason I didn’t visit Feng He Palace immediately was because I heard from the servants that you were ill and didn’t wish to receive guests.”
“That’s why I didn’t disturb you.”
As she spoke, Li Qing He covered her face and began to cry, making it seem as though Li Xuan Yue had mistreated her.
Li Xuan Yue frowned. “Enough. I’m not dead yet why are you crying?”
“Anyone would think I’ve been cruel to you.”
She couldn’t stand Li Qing He’s petty, melodramatic behavior.
In my past life, I would often burst into tears in front of her.
Back then, I was so foolish I never realized Li Qinghe was doing it on purpose.
I always thought I must have done something wrong or said something hurtful, making her upset.
