- Chapter 26 - The Heir Is Fine
This was truly a scene that could make one die of embarrassment.
Why did he have to choose to study medicine back then?
Wouldn’t studying something else have been better?
Was this a situation a mere imperial physician like him could handle?
“Rise.”
Li Feng could clearly see Physician Fang’s nervousness.
It wasn’t just him even she, the Phoenix Empress seated high above, felt equally uneasy.
Though Physician Fang had once told her that Li Xuanyue was merely acting, lying about her infertility to avoid their reproach,
now, seeing her ghostly pale complexion,
Li Feng couldn’t help but harbor doubts.
Was she truly infertile, or had she lied to them because she was unwell?
If it were the latter, she could understand and forgive.
But if it were the former, then she, as the Empress Mother, would truly have to consider and plan for the future of the Phoenix Clan.
“Hurry and take Xuanyue Princess’s pulse,” Li Feng urged. “See how her health truly is whether she is truly infertile, as rumored.”
Li Qinghe glanced at Physician Fang the moment he stood up.
The implication was unmistakable.
Physician Fang quickly lowered his head. “Yes!”
His heart was pounding so hard he felt like he might die.
Not just his own life, but his entire family’s fate now rested in Li Xuanyue’s hands.
Disobedience was not an option.
“No need for such formalities. Just proceed.”
Li Xuanyue openly extended her wrist before everyone.
Her fair skin resembled smooth white jade, striking awe into those who saw it.
Physician Fang’s fingers trembled with tension as he raised them. “Forgive my presumption, Princess.”
He hesitated for a few seconds before finally placing his index and middle fingers on her pulse.
The hall fell into complete silence.
Li Qinghe’s gaze remained fixed on Physician Fang’s fingers resting on Li Xuanyue’s wrist.
Her breath held.
Only when Physician Fang withdrew his hand did Li Qinghe lift her eyes to his face.
“Well, Physician Fang? How is my elder sister’s condition? Is it truly as the rumors say?”
Everyone in the hall pricked up their ears, awaiting Physician Fang’s answer.
Even Li Feng, seated above, couldn’t resist urging him.
“Physician Fang, speak plainly. These are all key members of the Phoenix Clan there is nothing you cannot say.”
“Indeed, Physician Fang. We are all elders of the clan. Speak openly before us.”
This way, they could know for certain whether Li Xuanyue had lied to them.
Physician Fang’s anxiety was unbearable.
He was truly being forced into a corner.
it was no different from being burned alive.
Yet he had no chance to retreat or resist.
Utterly stifling.
“Reporting to the Phoenix Empress.”
Physician Fang first glanced at Li Xuanyue before sweeping his gaze over Li Qinghe and the others.
Finally, he settled on Li Feng and spoke slowly:
“The Eldest Princess’s pulse is strong, her health robust there are no issues whatsoever.”
“Her fertility is unimpaired!”
“You’re lying!”
Li Qinghe blurted out without thinking.
Only when she realized the entire hall’s eyes were upon her did she.
Only then did she realize she had been too aggressive in this matter and hurriedly explained:
“Imperial Mother, what I meant was that elder sister’s complexion is so pale how could she possibly be fine? Imperial Physician Fang must have lied.”
Although Li Qinghe didn’t know why Imperial Physician Fang hadn’t followed her previous instructions to reveal Li Xuanyue’s difficulty in bearing children, she was absolutely certain that Li Xuanyue’s health wasn’t as robust as the physician had claimed with strong pulse, good health, and no reproductive issues. He must have lied.
Li Xuanyue gazed at Li Qinghe with an ambiguous smile. “Little sister is so certain there’s something wrong with my health?” she said vaguely. “You don’t even believe Imperial Physician Fang’s diagnosis?”
Her earlier behavior had practically announced to everyone that Imperial Physician Fang was her subordinate. She couldn’t have been more obvious in her haste as if afraid people wouldn’t guess her true intentions.
“Imperial Physician Fang was personally assigned by Father and has been taking my pulse for years. Why would he lie?” Li Xuanyue continued. “By saying this, little sister, are you hoping I’m ill?”
Li Qinghe’s face turned deathly pale.
“Kneel!”
Before she could refute or explain herself, Li Feng, seated above them, spoke first.
“You ungrateful wretch! How vicious you are, to harbor such thoughts! I’ve raised you for nothing!”
“No, Imperial Mother! I’ve been wronged!”
At this point, Li Qinghe had no time to consider the implications or plot against Li Xuanyue further. She hurriedly defended herself: “I only spoke out of excessive concern for elder sister! In truth, no one wishes for her health more than I do! I beg Imperial Mother to see the truth!”
Such heartfelt words might have convinced her past self. But having witnessed Li Qinghe’s acting skills, Li Xuanyue knew how insincere those words were. How could someone who secretly wished for her early death genuinely desire her good health?
“Enough!”
Li Feng was old, but not blind. She had seen every detail of Li Qinghe’s panicked reaction. Her eagerness proved she was already convinced Li Xuanyue couldn’t bear children. What kind of loving sister would insist her elder sister was infertile?
“I don’t care if you’re sincere or not,” Li Feng said sternly. “Imperial Physician Fang’s diagnosis was clear: Yue’er is in good health. If anyone dares spread rumors about her fertility again, they’ll answer to me!”
With Li Feng’s intervention, none of the elders dared say another word. They all left in disgrace.
Li Qinghe’s face darkened with suppressed fury. Though unwilling, she had no choice but to endure it. However, as she turned to leave, she couldn’t resist casting a glance toward Imperial Physician Fang a look so icy and murderous it sent chills down his spine.
Later, when Imperial Physician Fang followed Li Xuanyue out of the central hall, he immediately knelt before her.
“Your Highness!”
The physician looked at Li Xuanyue with obvious anxiety, which she understood perfectly. Today, he had betrayed Li Qinghe in public. She wouldn’t let him off easily when she returned.
“Don’t worry, I will protect you.”
She raised an eyebrow slightly and said, “My hidden guards will secretly follow you all the way back. You won’t suffer any harm whatsoever.”
