- Chapter 28 - What's the Use of That Brain of Yours
Li Feng looked at the scene before her with great satisfaction. “No need for such formalities among family. Everyone, please take your seats.”
Led by Jun He, the five consorts finally took their seats one by one beside Li Xuanyue.
“I heard Princess Xuanyue is in poor health and may struggle to bear children?”
Someone from the five clans suddenly blurted out this question, instantly twisting the conversation back to the tense atmosphere of the previous day.
The previously pleasant scene froze in an instant.
Li Xuanyue glanced at the expressions of everyone present but remained silent.
She had already explained the matter of heirs clearly the day before it was nothing but baseless rumors she had spread to force Li Qinghe to reveal her true colors.
She just hadn’t expected the effect to be so widespread.
So many people knew about it.
“Second Prince, who told you that?”
Li Feng set down her wine cup and lifted her gaze to Jun Mo, the snake clan prince seated in the hall, asking coolly.
After investigating the matter yesterday, Li Feng had immediately sent people to debunk the rumors and spread the words of Physician Fang.
Had they not received the news?
The Second Prince was taken aback, not expecting Li Feng to personally step in and question him on Li Xuanyue’s behalf. Recovering quickly, he set down his wine cup and replied,
“I heard it from some clansmen on the way here, so I thought to ask the Grand Princess.”
Jun Mo was no well wisher. Whether Li Xuanyue could bear children or not had little to do with him.
He asked purely to mock Jun He.
Back in the snake clan, Jun He, relying on his mother’s favor with the emperor, had never regarded his brothers with any respect.
Now that his mother was dead and he had been discarded as a pawn for marriage alliance with the Phoenix Clan, Jun Mo would be lying if he said he wasn’t pleased.
If Jun He ended up without heirs in the future.
How tragic would that be?
The thought alone was delightful.
Jun He saw right through his Second Brother’s game.
He paid it no mind, keeping his face cold as he picked up his chopsticks and silently ate from the dishes before him.
Li Xuanyue gave him a sidelong glance but remained quiet.
She knew all too well that her five consorts were far from as harmless as they appeared.
Especially this Jun consort the more indifferent he seemed on the surface, the more ruthless he would be when striking from the shadows.
In their past life, on their wedding night when her madness flared, Jun He had shown no mercy.
Though he knew she was drugged, he had still plunged a dagger into her chest to save himself.
Though she had later tortured him to death, the ferocity in his eyes that night had haunted her ever since.
It was a gaze filled with resentment and hatred.
Even now, the memory made her skin crawl.
“Then, Second Prince, have you also heard the Phoenix Clan’s people say these rumors are false?”
Li Feng had little patience left. “Such baseless gossip is only fit for idle chatter among commoners. How could a royal prince of the snake clan believe such things?”
The implication was clear: You’re not some commoner from another clan. If you believe everything you hear, what’s the use of that brain of yours?
It would be better not to think about anything at all and just listen to what others say from now on.
Li Feng’s words couldn’t have been more cutting.
She didn’t spare Jun Mo any face whatsoever.
Jun Mo’s expression was utterly humiliated.
In all his years, he had only ever been bested by Jun He before.
Never had he been made to look like such a fool in front of so many people.
Li Feng’s words had truly caused him to lose face before all the clans.
And the most frustrating part was that what she said was true.
If everyone were like him, only listening to others without using their brains,
how would they be any different from those unenlightened snakes?
For a moment, Jun Mo, unable to find any words to retort, could only sit there sullenly, drowning his humiliation in wine.
The representatives from the other four clans watched Jun Mo’s predicament with barely concealed schadenfreude.
To them, the second prince of the Snake Clan was nothing more than a fool.
What should have been a perfectly pleasant family banquet had been ruined by his tactless remarks about the other party’s difficulty in bearing offspring.
His behavior was no different from pointing at Li Feng’s face and declaring that the Phoenix Clan was doomed.
That Li Feng had tolerated him at all, without having her guards throw him out, was already showing him immense face.
What more did he want?
After several rounds of drinks, the visiting relatives began to grow tipsy.
Among them, Lang Hua’s aunt, Shu Fen, was the most visibly affected. After a few cups, she completely let her true nature show.
She transformed into her fox form right then and there.
Her fiery red fur looked soft and sleek, her seductive fox eyes brimming with lazy charm as she unabashedly rested her fox head on the table.
Lang Hua, sitting beside her, was mortified with embarrassment.
She really wasn’t treating Li Feng and the others as outsiders at all.
“The Phoenix Clan’s wine is truly delicious,” Shu Fen remarked, smacking her fox lips. She lifted her head from the table, her entire demeanor exuding fox-like allure. “Hua’er, when it’s time to go back, you must ask the Phoenix Empress for a few jars for your aunt to take home and savor.”
Lang Hua: “…”
Could he pretend not to know her?
“Don’t worry, Auntie,” Li Xuanyue said, Shu Fen’s fox form genuinely warming her heart. “When you leave, I’ll make sure Mother gives you several jars to take back.”
“So you can drink to your heart’s content.”
Lang Hua looked at Li Xuanyue in surprise.
Didn’t she find this behavior improper?
Or did she simply not care?
A complex emotion flickered in his dark eyes.
“Hehe, Princess Xuanyue is so thoughtful, unlike my nephew Lang Hua here, who hasn’t answered me after all this time,” Shu Fen pouted with her fox mouth. “He deserves a good spanking.”
“Alright, let’s call it a night.”
Shu Fen’s transformation was nothing unusual among the Hundred Clans. Li Feng didn’t feel the slightest disrespect; on the contrary, she found it refreshingly genuine.
She stood and raised her hand, leaving the rest of the arrangements to Li Xuanyue.
“Attendant Lang, please escort Auntie to my quarters to rest,” Li Xuanyue instructed. “The other four may follow Yin Xin.”
As her chief maid and confidante, Yin Xin should have no trouble handling such matters.
“Esteemed guests, this way!” Yin Xin, suddenly entrusted with this responsibility, seemed immensely encouraged and honored. She straightened her posture and gestured for the four clan representatives to follow.
This was her first time handling such matters, so she naturally had to be mature and composed to avoid embarrassing their princess.
“Your Highness, I have some matters I’d like to discuss privately with Lord Shii. May I humbly request your permission for this audience?”
