- Chapter 3 - The Eldest Princess Goes Mad and Kills
“Disaster! The eldest princess has gone mad and killed someone! The eldest princess has gone mad and killed someone.”
Half an hour later, a terrified scream suddenly rang out from outside the Phoenix Harmony Hall.
This caused everyone present outside the hall to gather in alarm.
The bamboo windows of Phoenix Harmony Hall appeared unusually bright under the candlelight from within.
The sounds of destruction and muffled groans could faintly be heard continuously from inside.
Everyone vaguely saw three or four shadows collapse against the bamboo windows in response to the noises.
All the maids and guards exchanged uneasy glances.
“Wasn’t today supposed to be the joyous wedding day for the eldest princess and her five consorts? How could something like this happen?”
Uninformed maids huddled together, whispering questions to each other.
“Could the eldest princess really have killed the consorts?”
Those standing outside the hall still couldn’t believe it.
Though the eldest princess had always been somewhat arrogant in their eyes,
she had never been so violently insane as to take lives.
Moreover, the consorts were all sent by other clans to foster goodwill with the Phoenix Clan.
Anyone with even a shred of reason wouldn’t possibly slaughter them on their wedding night.
“Or perhaps we misheard? Maybe the commotion is just louder than usual because of the consummation?”
Just as the maids and guards were at a loss about what to do,
Li Qinghe arrived hurriedly with her attendants and guards from a distance.
“Why are you all just standing there dumbly at the door? Break it down at once!”
A single sharp glance from Li Qinghe jolted the bewildered maids and guards into action.
“Do you want all the consorts to die at the eldest princess’s hands?”
She had waited far too long for this day there was no way she would let this opportunity slip away.
Hearing this, the maids and guards naturally didn’t dare hesitate and rushed forward to force open the doors of Phoenix Harmony Hall.
A glint of triumph flickered in Li Qinghe’s eyes.
Her heart pounded with exhilaration.
“The Phoenix Sovereign has arrived!”
Yet just as she was about to step toward the hall’s entrance, a loud announcement came from nearby.
Li Qinghe stiffened. Recognizing the newcomer, her lips curled into a faint, inscrutable smile before she immediately dropped to her knees.
“Your daughter greets the Sovereign Mother.”
“All hail the Phoenix Sovereign!”
All the maids and guards promptly knelt as well, their faces filled with reverence.
Li Feng frowned at the slightly ajar doors of Phoenix Harmony Hall.
“What is the meaning of this?” she demanded coldly, then shifted her gaze to Li Qinghe kneeling below.
“Why would Yue’er suddenly go mad and kill someone?”
And of all people, the five consorts who had just completed the wedding ceremony with her today.
Once this news spread, the consequences would be dire she refused to believe Li Xuanyue could be ignorant of that.
Normally, her daughter’s fits of madness, venting her frustrations by beating and scolding those around her, could be overlooked with a blind eye.
But what kind of occasion was today?
If her daughter couldn’t even restrain herself for this, then perhaps she needn’t be considered for the position of Phoenix Sovereign in the future.
“Phoenix Sovereign, after the wedding rites today, the eldest princess began showing signs of a frenzied madness.”
Suddenly, a maidservant in the crowd risked execution by stepping forward to speak: “But at that time, the First Princess never took it seriously. When this servant went to persuade her, I was ultimately… driven out by the First Princess.”
“Nonsense!”
Li Feng raised her sleeve in fury.
The fact that Li Xuanyue suffered from bouts of madness had long been no secret within the Phoenix Clan.
For three years now, the episodes had occurred intermittently.
But never before had it escalated to such a degree exposed before everyone’s eyes.
At this point, it wasn’t just the Phoenix Clan; likely the entire Hundred Clans had heard of Li Xuanyue attempting to assassinate the monarch on her wedding night.
Yet when Li Feng stormed into the Phoenix Harmony Hall with guards and maidservants, the scene inside stunned her.
And Li Feng wasn’t the only one stunned Li Qinghe, who had been smugly confident of success, was equally shocked.
After scheming for so long, she had finally seen her plans come to fruition today.
Who could have expected that upon witnessing the scene in the Phoenix Harmony Hall, the triumphant expression on her face would twist into something ugly.
Inside the hall, the five consorts sat cross-legged on the floor, forming a circle that trapped Li Xuanyue at the center.
Around them were scattered various bottles and jars more than a dozen placed before Li Xuanyue alone.
They were engaged in a game of finger-guessing.
When they saw Li Feng’s furious expression as she barged in with her entourage, the consorts were startled all except Li Xuanyue.
After all, in her past life, when Li Feng had stormed in with guards, Li Xuanyue had been standing in a pool of bl00d, wielding her treasured sword, ready to execute her fourth consort.
Back then, before her blade could fall, it had been intercepted by Li Feng’s trusted aide.
“Yue’er, what is the meaning of this?”
As the ruler of the clan, Li Feng quickly regained her composure after a brief moment of shock and addressed Li Xuanyue with calm authority.
“Greetings, Mother Empress.”
The five consorts rose respectfully and knelt in deference.
“Mother Empress, what brings you here?”
Li Xuanyue feigned surprise as she stood up.
“Your daughter was merely playing a game with the five consorts!”
Her eyes darted nervously, her expression guilty, like a child caught misbehaving, unable to meet Li Feng’s gaze.
Li Feng frowned. “A game?”
“Yes,” Li Xuanyue nodded. “Isn’t today your daughter’s wedding night?”
She stammered slightly as she continued,
“Since it was still early, we agreed to play finger-guessing. Whoever lost all their porcelain jars first would forfeit their right to attend the bridal chamber tonight.”
“But during the game, your daughter thought she heard a maidservant outside shouting about a murder.”
Li Xuanyue deftly shifted the topic.
“Who was murdered?”
She pretended not to understand as she looked between the two.
Li Qinghe’s face was now a picture of dismay.
Li Feng’s icy gaze turned toward her.
“Is this what you meant by Yue’er descending into madness in the Phoenix Harmony Hall, posing a threat to her five consorts?”
“Madness? A threat?”
Connecting these ominous words, Li Xuanyue understood everything.
“So, little sister, you’re suggesting this elder sister would slaughter her own five consorts on her wedding night?”
Li Qinghe paled. “No, elder sister, that’s not what I meant.”
Although Li Qinghe didn’t understand why things had developed this way,
or which step had gone wrong,
since the situation wasn’t progressing as she had anticipated, she naturally had to quickly extricate herself from this turmoil.
She needed to avoid being implicated and incurring her mother the Empress’s displeasure.
