- Chapter 31 - Who Gave You the Courage
His eyes darkened as he clutched his injured chest, glaring sharply in Li Xuanyue’s direction.
“What does Princess Xuanyue mean by this?”
Jun Mo had clearly done wrong on her turf, yet he still acted as though he had every right to be indignant.
Who gave him the audacity?
“That’s precisely what I should be asking the Second Prince.”
Li Xuanyue observed his unyielding demeanor as if he wouldn’t relent unless she gave him an explanation and felt an inexplicable displeasure rise within her.
“This is Phoenix Clan territory. Does the Second Prince intend to commit murder here?”
The Phoenix Clan was not one to be easily bullied by other races.
For this Second Prince to be so reckless as to oppress her people on her own land.
Did he think she was dead?
Only then did Jun Mo realize his misstep. His expression turned peculiar, but his tone remained composed. “Princess, you misunderstand. I merely wished to spar with my Third Brother, as it’s been so long since we last met.”
And just moments ago, he had been so close to crippling Jun He for good.
Who would have thought Princess Xuanyue would intervene at the last moment?
Hah!
His Third Brother’s luck was truly something else.
Spar?
If Li Xuanyue actually believed that, she’d be a fool.
From her hiding spot behind the peach tree, she had seen everything clearly.
This was no spar it was an outright attempt on Jun He’s life.
What surprised her most was that her own consort, Jun He, lacked the magical power to fight back.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have stepped in at the critical moment to shield him from the fatal strike.
“If it’s a spar, then you should have chosen a suitable location.”
Li Xuanyue cut straight to the point:
“What kind of spectacle is this?”
Did he think he could get away with disposing of the evidence?
Jun Mo’s face stiffened with embarrassment. “Princess Xuanyue is right. I’ll be more mindful in the future.”
Having said that, he knew his actions today had crossed a line.
His gaze then fell upon Jun He, who lay battered on the ground.
“My apologies, Third Brother. I lost control today. Don’t take it to heart.”
Yet his tone carried little remorse only a trace of regret.
And everyone knew exactly what he regretted.
“Does the Second Prince truly believe a simple apology is enough to settle this?”
Jun He was too severely injured to speak, but that didn’t mean she would stay silent.
“Consort Jun is, after all, one of my people.”
Li Xuanyue’s words were sharp, her gaze unwavering as she stared Jun Mo down, her stance unyielding.
“Now that you’ve beaten him half to death, shouldn’t the Second Prince give me an explanation?”
Did he think anyone in her palace could be bullied at will by outsiders?
If word got out, it wouldn’t just be her reputation at stake it would be the entire Phoenix Clan’s dignity.
Jun Mo’s smile froze.
He hadn’t expected Li Xuanyue to stand up for Jun He.
Wasn’t Princess Xuanyue known for treating her consorts like dirt?
Many in her palace had fled, unable to endure her cruelty.
Why would she defend a bastard like Jun He?
Jun Mo took a deep breath, steadying himself before speaking.
“Then how does the Princess propose we resolve this?”
He had indeed beaten Jun He.
But the man had it coming.
Even if given another chance, he would still strike down that worthless bastard.
“Apologize to him.”
Li Xuanyue’s demand was simple. Since Jun Mo looked down on Jun He so much, she was determined to make his noble head bow and utter an apology to Jun He. She wanted to see how he could still act superior in front of Jun He after this.
Jun Mo’s face instantly darkened. “Isn’t the princess’s request a bit excessive?” he protested unhappily.
Apologize to this trash?
Why should he?
Was Jun He even worthy?
“Besides, this was just a friendly spar between brothers.” The implication was clear if Jun He himself didn’t care and hadn’t spoken up, why should a princess interfere?
Li Xuanyue’s expression turned stormy.
“Apologize!”
This time, however, the command didn’t come from Li Xuanyue but from Jun He, who had been silently sitting on the ground until now. His gaze was sharp as he glared at Jun Mo.
Li Xuanyue was standing up for him how could he not see that?
How could he let her be humiliated in front of Jun Mo?
If Jun Mo wanted him to speak up, then he would oblige.
“You!” Jun Mo’s eyes blazed with fury as he stared at Jun He. If looks could kill, Jun He would have already been dead under that glare.
Li Xuanyue tilted her chin up. “Did you hear that, Second Prince? My consort is now demanding an apology from you.”
How long did he plan to stand there doing nothing?
Did he think stalling would make her let him go?
Jun Mo bitterly regretted not finishing Jun He off with that earlier strike now he was trapped in this impossible situation.
It was like having a dead fly in his mouth too disgusting to swallow, too revolting to spit out.
“Second Brother!”
Just as the three of them were locked in a stalemate, Jun He’s irritating voice rang in his ears again.
Jun Mo’s eyes flashed with impatience.
“Sorry!”
After a long internal struggle, he finally forced out the apology, though resentment burned in his chest. To him, this was no different from a slap to the face.
But Li Xuanyue wasn’t satisfied.
“Second Prince, have you not eaten?” she asked lightly, side-eyeing him.
“Even the lowest guard in my palace speaks louder than you just did.”
“Are you whispering because you’re weak?”
Li Xuanyue deliberately twisted the knife, humiliating Jun Mo with her words.
He had been so arrogant in the peach grove, shamelessly mocking Jun He now she was giving him a taste of his own medicine.
“You!” Jun Mo’s eyes blazed with fury as he glared at Li Xuanyue.
Never in his life had he been insulted like this.
Her words might as well have been a dagger to his heart.
“Second Brother, the princess recently gifted me a ginseng root,” Jun He remarked coolly. “If you don’t mind, send someone to my palace to fetch it consider it a tonic.”
Jun He was fanning the flames, doubling down on the humiliation to make Jun Mo feel like he was being roasted alive.
Jun Mo’s face twisted in disgust. Among the serpent princes, he was the last one who could be called weak.
Jun He’s words were clearly meant to cement the idea that he was lacking.
If this got out, which noble family would dare marry their daughter to him?
In the future, he might not even be considered for the position of the new Snake Clan ruler.
“If Third Brother has such intentions, he should keep them to himself.”
