- Chapter 38 - Holding a Grudge Against You
Lately, her nephew had been increasingly disobedient.
She had told him to visit the princess more often in his free time.
Yet he chose to stay holed up in his Wolf Fang Hall, refusing to come out.
At this rate, when would their fox clan ever get to cradle little fox and phoenix hybrids?
Li Xuanyue hadn’t expected this aunt of Lang Shijun to be so enthusiastic. With a faint smile, she replied, “It’s nothing much. Just some clan members mentioning that the Second Prince is returning to the serpent clan.”
The Second Prince Li Xuanyue referred to was none other than Jun Mo, who had come to the phoenix clan for a visit.
Her informants had learned that this serpent prince had a heated argument with Li Qinghe at the Chaoren Hall yesterday. Though the details remained unclear,
it was certainly no trivial matter.
Shufen widened her eyes. “Really?”
Though she found the topic intriguing, she hadn’t paid it much mind.
Interclan marriages were nothing unusual to her.
But now that Li Xuanyue brought it up, her interest was piqued again.
“No wonder I didn’t see the Second Prince today.”
There was an odd tone in Shufen’s voice. “Could it be that Princess Qinghe has detained him?”
“Who knows?”
Tengluo chimed in from the side. “Maybe the Second Prince stayed willingly?”
Today was supposed to be their day of departure.
Yet, aside from the four clans present in the grand hall, Jun Mo was nowhere to be seen.
It was only natural for people to speculate.
Just as they were chatting over food, a commotion erupted outside the hall.
Li Feng immediately frowned. “What’s going on out there?”
She turned to the maid beside her.
After a quick inquiry, the maid hurried back to report.
“Your Majesty, Princess Qinghe and the serpent clan’s Second Prince are arguing outside.”
At this, Li Feng’s expression darkened instantly.
“Bring them both in.”
Li Xuanyue sat leisurely, sipping her wine as if watching a show.
Her dear sister must be at her wit’s end by now, no?
She thought her scheme was flawless.
But did she really believe Jun Mo was someone she could control?
That man was eyeing the serpent throne.
Why would he ever compromise or give it up for a woman?
Soon, Li Qinghe and Jun Mo entered the hall.
“Your daughter pays respects to Mother Empress.”
“Greetings to the Phoenix Empress.”
After bowing to Li Feng, they took their seats.
“Sit.”
Li Feng suppressed her displeasure and waved them off.
If possible, she’d rather not see either of them.
Yet their quarrel had reached the Zhonghe Hall.
She couldn’t ignore it now.
“Qinghe, what were you arguing about with the serpent clan’s Second Prince just now?”
The moment Li Qinghe sat down, Li Feng questioned her.
Under normal circumstances, Li Qinghe shouldn’t have been present at such an important gathering. But there was no choice.
The situation had escalated, and it needed to be addressed.
Rumors were spreading like wildfire.
Many claimed Li Qinghe had schemed against the Second Prince, leading to their entanglement.
Li Feng couldn’t pretend to be oblivious.
“Phoenix Empress, what happened between me and Princess Qinghe was merely a misunderstanding.”
Before Li Qinghe could speak, Jun Mo interjected hastily,
as if afraid of being dragged into another dispute with her.
Li Feng’s delicate brows furrowed slightly as she felt a trace of displeasure in her heart.
No matter how lacking her daughter might be, it was not for others to disdain.
Was Jun Mo’s current demeanor implying that her daughter was unworthy of him?
“What does the Second Prince mean by these words?”
Her inscrutable voice betrayed no emotion. “Were you not a willing participant?”
A flash of killing intent flickered through her narrowed phoenix eyes brief, but noticed by Li Xuanyue.
Jun Mo, preoccupied with thoughts of returning to the Snake Clan, failed to notice this. He kept his head lowered as he continued speaking.
“Your subject and the princess are merely friends. My heart has long belonged to another in the Phoenix Clan.”
He spoke with grave seriousness. “After returning this time, I intend to wed that person. I beg the Phoenix Queen’s understanding.”
“You lie!”
Before Li Feng could open her mouth, Li Qinghe interrupted.
“Imperial Mother, I’ve already sent people to investigate the Snake Clan. Jun Mo has no beloved there.”
“He only says this to spite me, fearing I won’t allow his return to the Snake Clan in the future.”
Jun Mo nearly choked on his rage at Li Qinghe’s shameless words.
Wretched woman!
How dare she!
Meeting Jun Mo’s hate filled gaze, Li Qinghe showed no alarm. Instead, she stepped forward calmly as if nothing were wrong, reaching to take his hand only to have him violently recoil, as if she were something filthy.
For an instant, Li Qinghe’s face stiffened, but she quickly regained composure.
“Jun Mo, don’t be angry.”
She deliberately adopted a placating tone before the crowd. “I know you wish to return to the Snake Clan, but now isn’t the time. What if we go together after our wedding?”
“Right now is for my sister to receive envoys from various clans. Let’s not disturb them here, all right?”
Jun Mo’s fingers itched to tear apart Li Qinghe’s smiling, virtuous mask.
Indeed, he acted on the impulse but the moment his hand moved, Li Qinghe firmly caught it.
“Don’t make a scene,” she warned in a low voice meant only for his ears. “Do you want them laughing at us further?”
Jun Mo glared at her with loathing.
“Enough. This is no place for your quarrels.”
Li Feng waved a dismissive hand, as if brushing away bad luck. “If you have matters to settle, do so elsewhere. Don’t make noise here.”
She was too old for such theatrics.
“As you command, Imperial Mother.”
Li Qinghe tried dragging Jun Mo from the Hall of Harmony, but how could he leave with matters unresolved? He shook off her grip without hesitation.
“Princess Qinghe, don’t force me to lay hands on you,” Jun Mo said with cold menace.
His restraint didn’t stem from weakness rather, he sought to preserve some dignity for them both. But if she insisted on discarding even that.
Then courtesy be damned.
Li Qinghe’s smile vanished instantly.
“Phoenix Queen, what transpired between your subject and Princess Qinghe was merely a misunderstanding.”
Jun Mo solemnly explained, “Someone schemed against me, causing numerous misunderstandings between me and Princess Qinghe.”
“Now the seven day deadline has arrived. I can overlook the schemes against me in the Phoenix Clan, but I must return to the Snake Clan immediately.”
