- Chapter 45 - What Are You Doing?
Zhaochuan wore a sheer green robe that shimmered faintly amidst the pink peach blossoms, making him stand out vividly.
He truly embodied the saying, “Passing through a sea of flowers without a single petal clinging to him.”
For a man to wear a green sheer robe with the alluring grace typically reserved for women Zhaochuan was undoubtedly the first in the Phoenix Clan to achieve such a feat.
“I heard Lord Yao is the fourth young master of the Wolf Clan?”
Zhaochuan’s disdainful eyes swept over Yaoguang from head to toe.
He didn’t seem all that impressive.
That sickly pallor how could the Wolf Clan have chosen such a weakling for a political marriage?
Didn’t they fear offending Li Xuan Yue?
“Who are you?”
Hezhao, Yaoguang’s trusted aide, spoke up.
When faced with someone unfamiliar yet bold enough to provoke them outright,
Hezhao concluded the man must be utterly deranged.
Zhaochuan frowned, displeased that his question had been ignored in favor of a subordinate’s interruption.
“Since when do servants interrupt their masters’ conversations?”
He snapped, “Lord Yao clearly has no control over his own people.”
Only then did Yaoguang’s grayish-brown gaze slowly settle on Zhaochuan’s face.
“Are you instructing me on how to manage my affairs, Lord Zhao?”
His cool voice carried a faint undercurrent of authority.
Surprise flickered in Zhaochuan’s dark eyes. “You know who I am?”
Then why had his subordinate just asked?
Were they mocking him on purpose?
Understanding dawned in Yaoguang’s striking wolf-like eyes as he met Zhaochuan’s gaze steadily.
“Not long ago, Princess Xuan Yue dismissed numerous consorts and attendants in front of many witnesses only the consorts from the Five Clans and two others surnamed Wen and Zhao remained.”
“Coincidentally, Consort Wen was recently expelled from the Phoenix Clan for misconduct. That leaves only one Consort Zhao.”
As he spoke, Yaoguang’s sharp phoenix eyes scrutinized Zhaochuan’s appearance.
His brows remained tightly furrowed.
He couldn’t bring himself to approve of the attire and demeanor of Xuan Yue’s consorts.
The best he could do was ignore it.
“Given your alluring attire and entourage, I deduced you must be the remaining Consort Zhao.”
Zhaochuan’s expression turned haughty and smug.
“Since you know who I am, I won’t mince words.”
He cut straight to the point. “You can’t enter this pavilion.”
“Why not?”
Hezhao stepped forward indignantly on Yaoguang’s behalf. “This pavilion doesn’t belong to you alone. Why shouldn’t my lord enter?”
“Since when do you make the rules?”
Did he think he could bully Yaoguang just because he appeared frail?
He’d have to get past Hezhao’s fists first.
Zhaochuan’s frown deepened. “Lord Yao, what’s the matter with this subordinate of yours?”
He spoke sharply to Yaoguang. “The master hasn’t even spoken, yet this servant acts more urgent than you.”
“Does he intend to replace you entirely?”
“Then serve Princess Xuan Yue in your stead?”
“With looks like his would that even work?”
His contempt was palpable as he looked Hezhao up and down.
“Don’t scare the princess to death before even getting into her bed. Hmph!”
Zhaochuan’s words were deliberately provoking.
It was as if Hezhao was some kind of trash.
Hezhao was nearly infuriated to death by Zhaochuan’s words.
“You!”
If Yaoguang hadn’t intervened in time, Hezhao might have already taken action against this audacious Zhaochuan.
“Lord Zhaochuan, mind your words.”
Yaoguang’s eyes gradually turned cold. Though his face still bore a sickly pallor, his tone was noticeably firmer than before.
“Princess Xuanyue is of noble status. How dare a mere attendant like you speak of her so carelessly?”
Yaoguang had intended this as a well meaning warning.
His gaze had already caught sight of the pink figure standing not far away.
It wouldn’t be long before she stepped forward.
Unfortunately, Zhaochuan didn’t appreciate Yaoguang’s kindness in the slightest. Instead of restraining himself, he grew even more arrogant.
“Oh, Lord Yaoguang is so considerate of others,” Zhaochuan sneered disdainfully. “Too bad the princess isn’t here to witness your loyalty.”
Yaoguang had no patience for talking to a brick wall. Since his words fell on deaf ears, there was no point in continuing this standoff.
“What are you doing?”
The smirk on Zhaochuan’s face froze as Yaoguang stepped forward.
Hadn’t he made himself clear?
This pavilion was his.
Yet Yaoguang kept advancing was he outright ignoring his words?
Yaoguang fixed Zhaochuan with an icy stare. “Do you truly believe this pavilion belongs to you alone?”
His deep voice carried a chilling detachment, as if pushing others away.
Standing a few centimeters taller than Zhaochuan, the slight lift of his chin when he spoke gave him an air of condescension.
“Move.”
Humiliation and fury flashed across Zhaochuan’s face. “How dare you speak to me like this?”
His outstretched finger trembled uncontrollably in the air, fueled by Yaoguang’s words.
“I am the princess’s attendant. Even if even if you are one now too, I entered the Phoenix Clan before you!”
“You refuse to address me as ‘elder brother,’ and now you dare use such a tone with me?”
“You have some nerve!”
Zhaochuan was behaving like a madman.
Yaoguang ignored him and continued forward.
In his eyes, this Lord Zhaochuan was nothing but a lunatic.
Not only was his attire indecent, but his words were laced with venom.
It was truly unbearable.
A murderous glint flashed in Zhaochuan’s eyes.
Seeing Yaoguang dismiss him so utterly, he trembled with rage.
Never in the Phoenix Clan had any attendant dared to disregard him like this.
Yaoguang was the first.
He felt his authority being challenged.
“Hey, what are you doing?”
“Young master!”
The moment Hezhao turned to follow, Zhaochuan suddenly lunged forward and shoved Yaoguang.
“SPLASH!”
The push sent Yaoguang stumbling, and he plunged straight into the lake beside the wooden walkway.
The once-calm water erupted in deep ripples from the impact.
Hezhao’s face paled. Without hesitation, he leaped in after him.
Moments later, he hauled the drenched Yaoguang out of the water.
“Cough! Cough!”
The icy lake water had flooded his mouth and nose, causing Yaoguang to cough violently after being rescued and brought ashore.
“Young master, are you alright?”
Hezhao patted Yaoguang’s back while anxiously and worriedly asking.
