- Chapter 6 - Righteous Indignation
Li Qinghe lowered her eyes. “This princess merely speculates so.”
After all, Lin Yue was Li Xuanyue’s man. Naturally, Li Qinghe couldn’t place her full trust in him and remained ambiguous:
“After all my elder sister has always treated me well.”
“If she truly did this, I have no right to resent her. I owe my current standing entirely to her.”
“Three years ago, had she not suddenly proposed to Her Majesty to move me and my father out of Taihe Palace.”
“Perhaps both my father and I would have long perished there.”
“Such immense kindness even if she asked me to die for it, I would willingly comply.”
Lin Yue listened to Li Qinghe’s heartfelt words with rising fury.
“How could the Second Princess think this way?”
He disagreed entirely. “Were you and the Noble Consort not confined in Taihe Palace precisely because of the Empress’s schemes?”
“The Grand Princess merely corrected the injustice, restoring dignity and honor to you and the Noble Consort. That was only right.”
“How could the Second Princess belittle herself so?”
In Lin Yue’s eyes, the current Empress was nothing but a viper.
Only someone as blind as the Phoenix Empress would believe him to be virtuous, magnanimous, and understanding.
“Rest assured, Second Princess. Lin Yue will surely persuade the Grand Princess to seek Her Majesty’s forgiveness and lift your confinement.”
Lin Yue’s righteous indignation was exactly what Li Qinghe had hoped for.
Li Xuanyue, you care for Lin Yue above all else, don’t you?
I wonder how it will feel when you’re wounded by the one you cherish most.
Once Lin Yue had left Chaoren Hall and was out of sight, Ruyue turned to Li Qinghe with a quiet question.
“Second Princess, do you think Attendant Lin will succeed?”
It wasn’t that she doubted Lin Yue’s capability, but the gravity of the matter was clear to all.
Unless the Grand Princess was a fool, she would never plead for Li Qinghe’s pardon before the Phoenix Empress based solely on Lin Yue’s words.
Li Qinghe lowered her gaze dismissively. “What does it matter?”
The outcome was irrelevant to her.
“Let him try. It will be interesting to see what choice my dear elder sister makes.”
Would it align with her suspicions?
Had Li Xuanyue already begun guarding against her?
–
Meanwhile, in Fenghuang Palace, Li Xuanyue had just returned from seeing off the envoys with her five attendants when her maid Yinxin entered.
“Grand Princess, Attendant Lin has arrived.”
Yinxin whispered the report at her side.
Li Xuanyue paused. She had been too occupied to seek him out, yet here he was, delivering himself to her doorstep.
She glanced at her five attendants. “Take your seats.”
The five exchanged uncertain looks, unsure of her intentions toward Attendant Lin.
Yet after last night and this morning, they understood that this supposedly reckless and temperamental Grand Princess was far more calculating than rumors suggested.
Thus, the five attendants obediently seated themselves on the wooden chairs nearby.
Soon after, Lin Yue strode into the hall with his head held high.
“Lin Yue pays his respects to the Grand Princess.”
The moment he entered, he offered Li Xuanyue a deep bow.
In the past, Li Xuanyue would have immediately stepped forward to help him up herself.
But this time, she did no such thing.
A maid beside her poured a cup of hot tea and handed it to her.
Li Xuanyue accepted the tea, gently blowing on it before taking a sip, as if completely unaware of Lin Shijun’s presence in the hall.
This indifference struck Lin Yue as somewhat strange, and he frowned in displeasure.
Just as he was about to speak, Li Xuanyue cut him off.
She set the cup of tea down unhurriedly on the table beside her, then lifted her gaze to meet his.
“Lin Shijun, you’ve come in such a hurry is there an urgent matter?”
Her tone was neither light nor heavy, yet her words echoed clearly throughout Fenghe Hall. Her cold, dark eyes fixed on him intently.
She hadn’t forgotten that in her past life, this very Lin Shijun had been her dear younger sister’s loyal accomplice.
Had he not personally rushed to Xihe Hall to inform her father of the empress’s decree to imprison her in Taihe Hall, her father would never have sacrificed his own life to protect her.
Lin Yue felt a chill run down his spine under her piercing stare.
From the moment he entered the hall to the moment he bowed, he believed he had not committed the slightest impropriety or mistake.
What did she mean by looking at him like this?
“Your Highness, I heard that the Second Princess has been ordered by Her Majesty to reflect upon her actions in Chaoren Hall for three months.”
Thinking of Li Qinghe, still confined in Chaoren Hall, Lin Yue pushed aside the unease in his heart.
“Might the Eldest Princess, for the sake of sisterhood, plead with Her Majesty to pardon the Second Princess’s punishment?”
Li Xuanyue arched a delicate brow. “And in what capacity, Lin Shijun, are you asking this favor of me?”
What if she refused?
What would he do then?
Lin Yue stiffened.
Never had he imagined that Li Xuanyue, usually so straightforward and amiable, would pose such a pointed question in front of so many people.
Had his long standing resistance finally provoked her displeasure even anger?
Was she trying to force him to acknowledge his place as her consort, to demand his attention?
Li Xuanyue paid no heed to his thoughts and continued.
“Lin Shijun, have you forgotten your position? You are my consort.”
Was he so indiscriminate with his affections that he would plead for just anyone?
Lin Yue stood rigid.
“My sister is perfectly fine where she is. If she wishes to leave, she will send her own maids to speak with me. What business is it of yours? Do you presume to speak for her? Or do you consider her your wife and me an outsider?”
“Is that why you couldn’t resist crawling into her bed?”
Her words were as cutting as they could be, utterly disregarding Lin Yue’s feelings.
In her past life, she had treated this consort with nothing but sincerity only for him to betray her, conspiring with Li Qinghe and sharing her bed.
Now that she had been reborn, she would never again trust a single word from him.
Lin Yue paled and dropped to his knees.
“Your Highness, please forgive me! That was not my intention.”
In his concern for Li Qinghe’s plight, he had forgotten his place and rushed to plead on her behalf.
If he had calmed down and thought it through, he definitely wouldn’t have acted so impulsively as he did now.
He would have surely found another way to make Li Xuanyue plead for Li Qinghe’s case before Li Feng.
