- Chapter 7 - Unconsummated Union
“Whether you meant it that way or not, this princess neither knows nor cares to know.”
Li Xuanyue gave Lin Yue no chance to explain, rising to her feet with finality. “But since you’re so concerned about my dear sister, perhaps you should serve her at Chaoren Palace once she’s finished her self-reflection.”
In any case, she could no longer keep him by her side.
“Your Highness!”
Lin Yue stared at Li Xuanyue in utter disbelief.
Had he misheard, or had she misspoken?
It was Li Xuanyue who had defied all opposition, overriding even the Monarch Consort’s objections to bring him from the Rabbit Clan into the Phoenix Clan as her personal attendant.
How could she cast him aside so easily?
Li Xuanyue’s decision shocked not only Lin Yue but also the five other attendants in the hall, along with her long serving maid Yinxin.
Everyone in the Phoenix Clan knew of Li Xuanyue’s exclusive favor toward Attendant Lin over the years.
She had treated him as delicately as one would a fragile treasure afraid he might melt in her mouth or shatter in her hands.
Though many attendants had come and gone by her side, only Attendant Lin had consistently received her special regard.
Yet to this day, their union remained unconsummated because Attendant Lin had never been ready.
“It was my mistake from the beginning,” Li Xuanyue continued, her gaze settling on Lin Yue once more. “I knew your reluctance yet forced you to stay as my attendant. After all these trials, I’ve finally come to understand.”
“A fruit plucked against its will tastes bitter. Since remaining with me brings you no joy, you should go to whoever does.”
These words should have filled Lin Yue with relief and liberation.
Yet inexplicably, he felt only a hollow confusion.
The five seated attendants exchanged knowing glances.
The message was clear: this was Li Xuanyue’s warning shot across their bows.
Should any of them emulate Attendant Lin’s half hearted allegiance physically present but spiritually elsewhere their fate would be far worse than his.
“Dismissed.”
Lin Yue barely registered leaving Fenghe Palace.
He had merely thought that as sisters, Li Xuanyue might intercede for Li Qinghe. Never had he imagined it would culminate in his being gifted to her instead.
By the time this realization struck, he was already outside the palace gates.
–
“Lord Jun, don’t you think our First Princess differs from the rumors?”
The five attendants conversed as they departed Fenghe Palace.
“The Hundred Clans claim Her Highness lacks foresight and has a volatile temper,” remarked Lord Lang, the fox envoy, his crimson robes flowing with effortless grace, eyes twinkling with amusement. “But after last night’s events, can any of you still believe her to be imprudent?”
The others remained silent, their lowered eyes confirming shared thoughts.
From the moment the princess enlisted them in her strategic “game” the previous evening, they had sensed her extraordinary cunning.
Her ability to swiftly reverse misfortune while leaving adversaries no opening for counterattack spoke volumes.
This was definitely not something an imprudent person could have accomplished.
It would be better to wait and see what other surprises the Eldest Princess had in store for them.
In less than half an hour, news that Imperial Consort Lin had been sent to Li Qinghe by Li Xuan Yue on the grounds that he was not her destined partner had spread throughout the Phoenix Clan.
“My child, you’ve finally come to your senses.”
In the Xihe Palace, Hua Shan, the Imperial Consort, looked at his daughter with heartache and embraced her.
“Look at you you’ve lost weight recently. Come, have a proper meal with your father.”
After releasing Li Xuan Yue, Hua Shan quickly picked up his chopsticks and began serving food into her bowl.
“Your mother already told me about last night’s incident.”
“In the future, try not to get too close to that girl Qinghe.”
Hua Shan continued adding dishes to her bowl as he advised her, “Your father can tell that girl Qinghe is no good.”
“Yet you’ve always valued the bond between you two as sisters. But this kind of attitude will only lead to you being taken advantage of.”
Sitting across from Li Xuan Yue, Hua Shan rambled on incessantly, looking utterly exhausted with worry.
His vivid display of concern made Li Xuan Yue’s heart ache abruptly.
“Father.”
In the end, she couldn’t suppress the bitterness in her heart and knelt before Hua Shan.
How could she have been so foolish in her past life?
Her father had devoted himself entirely to planning and strategizing for her sake, yet she had believed Li Qinghe’s slander and mistakenly thought he harbored ambitions of overstepping his authority. Not only had she failed to understand his painstaking efforts, but she had also pierced his heart with every word.
Back then, her father must have been utterly heartbroken.
Hua Shan was stunned. “My child, what’s wrong?”
He hurriedly stood and pulled her into his arms. “Why are you crying all of a sudden?”
“Alright, alright, your father won’t nag you anymore, and I won’t mention that girl Qinghe in front of you again, okay?”
The greatest regret of Hua Shan’s life was not personally ending that wretched Li Qinghe’s life.
Otherwise, his daughter wouldn’t have repeatedly defied him for that vile girl’s sake.
“Father, from now on, your daughter will protect you properly.”
As if making some solemn resolution, Li Li Xuanyuefted her head from Hua Shan’s embrace and vowed to him.
Hua Shan froze.
He didn’t take her words seriously at all.
“Alright, alright, from now on, you’ll be the one protecting your father.”
He responded dotingly.
Though this daughter of his often liked to oppose him, deep down, she was still very filial.
It was precisely because Hua Shan recognized this that he refused to give up so easily.
“Imperial Consort, Xiao Han has arrived.”
Just as the two were speaking, Hua Shan’s trusted aide, Xiao Ce, entered the hall from outside.
“Greetings to the Imperial Consort, greetings to Her Highness the Princess.”
Hua Shan straightened his robes. “Rise.”
The gentle paternal demeanor from earlier was completely gone from his face. His expression was cold, his words carrying the authority of a ruler over his subordinates.
“From now on, you will serve by Princess Xuan Yue’s side.”
“Protect her well on my behalf.”
“Father!”
Beyond shock, Li Xuan Yue was filled with even more confusion.
Both Xiao Han and Xiao Ce were Hua Shan’s most trusted aides, loyal to him for life.
Unless absolutely necessary, they would never leave their former master.
“My child, don’t be so surprised. Your father is doing this for your sake.”
Hua Shan took Li Xuanyue’s hand with a solemn expression and said, “After going through so much, your father has come to realize that Xiao Han is decisive and meticulous in his actions. Only with him by your side can I truly rest easy.”
Moreover, last night’s incident was no accident. If not for Li Xuanyue’s experiences from her past life, she might have truly fallen into the trap.
Therefore, she did not refuse Hua Shan’s well intentioned offer.
