- Chapter 4 - When a Courier Meets An Online
Cheng Qiuyi didn’t realize her hair tie was missing until she took a shower that evening.
It wasn’t anything valuable, but she was always meticulous about organizing things; anything she used had to be returned to its original place. A hair tie like this, without legs, couldn’t possibly have run away by itself, could it?
She searched for a long time but couldn’t find it, guessing that Liu Shuhan must have accidentally taken it with her.
That hair tie of Cheng Qiuyi’s was indeed taken by Liu Shuhan, but it wasn’t by accident; she did it on purpose. Liu Shuhan had a slightly perverse habit: she liked collecting Cheng Qiuyi’s belongings. Yes, the object of this specific obsession was Cheng Qiuyi.
Liu Shuhan had liked Cheng Qiuyi since high school, and being a coward, she never dared to confess openly. Once, during the hardship of a secret crush, she picked up a test paper on the ground, and upon closer look, it turned out to be Cheng Qiuyi’s! Liu Shuhan secretly kept that test paper, and from then on, her habit spiraled out of control.
She had a locked drawer filled with small items that Cheng Qiuyi had used: a broken pencil, an eraser with just a small piece left, a draft notebook filled with writing… Liu Shuhan particularly loved that draft notebook.
Most people’s draft notebooks are messy, but Cheng Qiuyi’s wasn’t; even her scratch work was neat and tidy. Occasionally, there would be a page without a full set of calculation formulas, but instead, one or two sentences Cheng Qiuyi had casually written. Every time Liu Shuhan read these short sentences, averaging less than ten characters, she was filled with joy, as if she were participating in Cheng Qiuyi’s life. The thin paper pages had been flipped through so many times that the edges were frayed.
Liu Shuhan knew what she was doing was wrong, but she just couldn’t control her hands. It was as if by possessing a small item belonging to Cheng Qiuyi, she could get a little closer to her.
Liu Shuhan devoutly brought the hair tie belonging to Cheng Qiuyi to her lips, kissed it, and placed it in her secret drawer.
“Qiuyi, if only you liked me too,” Liu Shuhan thought sadly, lying on the desk.
After taking a shower, Cheng Qiuyi was curled up in the lounge chair, spacing out, holding a jacket that Liu Shuhan had left behind.
Liu Shuhan had been staying at her place for over a week, and her favorite spot was this lounge chair. Whenever she had nothing to do, she would squint her eyes and curl up into a ball in the chair, like a kitten. Every time, Cheng Qiuyi couldn’t help but want to rub her head.
The air was filled with Liu Shuhan’s scent. Cheng Qiuyi took a greedy deep breath, feeling as if Liu Shuhan was still there, preparing dinner for her in the kitchen, all her favorite dishes.
But her rationality told Cheng Qiuyi that she had left, Liu Shuhan was gone.
Cheng Qiuyi really wanted to find a rope and tie Liu Shuhan up, so that Liu Shuhan’s eyes would only see her, and her life would only revolve around her. That way, she could protect her properly and prevent her from getting hurt again.
When Cheng Qiuyi saw the injuries on Liu Shuhan that day, she truly wished all the wounds were on herself, and Liu Shuhan would still be that lively, carefree girl. Heaven knows how long Cheng Qiuyi had to hold back from beating that despicable driver to death.
Cheng Qiuyi buried her entire face in the coat belonging to another person, imagining she was embracing Liu Shuhan herself. Her soft, long hair fell down, enveloping her upper body, and she felt an unprecedented exhaustion.
“Shuhan, I love you,” Cheng Qiuyi whispered.
And so, the two people, each preoccupied with their own thoughts, both suffered from insomnia.
Liu Shuhan hadn’t slept well the night before, and the next morning, she went to work with two panda eyes. As soon as she entered the company, the manager called her into the office and gave her a stern lecture.
“Liu Shuhan, what’s going on? You’ve been asking people to cover your shifts every day for a week. Do you not want to work anymore?”
“Manager, I was in a car accident a week ago, and I asked for leave…” Liu Shuhan said quietly, bearing the brunt of the manager’s anger.
“You sent me a text message, and I didn’t even agree; does that count as asking for leave? Don’t think you can do whatever you want just because you have some ‘damn beautiful courier’ title and have been on TV a couple of times! Do you think the company can’t function without you? If you don’t want to work, get out immediately!”
“When have I ever done whatever I wanted?” Liu Shuhan felt baffled. She thought she was quite diligent at work. She had been a courier for more than half a year, and no customer had ever complained. No matter how far, she always made sure the customer received the package. How did it turn into her relying on her looks to stay in the company, according to the manager?
“You still dare to argue! You…” The manager was furious and about to continue yelling, but a call came in. He temporarily put Liu Shuhan aside and focused on answering the phone.
“Hello… Oh, Mr. Fang… I’d never give her a hard time, as you say… Don’t worry! Regarding our contract for next year… Great, great. Then I’ll wish us a happy cooperation in advance!”
The manager hung up the phone as if he had a change of face, smiling and patting Liu Shuhan’s shoulder. “You’re a very good young person, promising. Keep up the good work; the company won’t treat you unfairly.”
“…” Liu Shuhan left the manager’s office helplessly. Who on earth was so influential that a single phone call could make the manager, who had been spitting fire, so amiable?
After that, Liu Shuhan went back to work as usual, riding her electric scooter, which had a chipped paint from the accident, through the streets and alleys to deliver express packages.
During this time, Cheng Qiuyi called her a few times, inviting her to go shopping, eat, and watch movies. However, it was the peak season for online shopping, and Liu Shuhan was swamped. She really didn’t have time to keep the appointments. After refusing a few times, Cheng Qiuyi seemed a bit unhappy and never called her again. When Liu Shuhan found time to call her, she wouldn’t answer.
Liu Shuhan was being squeezed dry by work, and the person she liked was sulking and ignoring her. Anxious and stressed, she developed several painful sores in her mouth; even drinking water hurt. She covered her cheeks and looked miserable all day.
That day, a group of couriers was dividing packages according to delivery areas, and Xiao Wang nearby chuckled.
“Did you find money, kid? What are you giggling about?” a coworker teased.
“There’s a local wealthy customer here. I just counted; she has fifteen packages just for herself today!”
“Really? What a coincidence? Fifteen packages, all from the same courier company at the same time?”
“Otherwise, why would I be so surprised?” Xiao Wang said with disdain.
“What’s the customer’s name?”
“The surname is Cheng… called… called Cheng Mutou (Cheng Dullard)… Hey, Xiao Liu, isn’t that your delivery area?”
Liu Shuhan was in a bad mood and was dividing the express packages with her head down. She slowly looked up when she heard someone call her. “What is it?”
“Xiao Liu, have you been out of it these past few days? No, the manager is notorious for scolding people. Just forget it; dwelling on it is just making yourself angry, right? That’s enough, the packages for your area are sorted out. Go deliver them. We’ll handle the rest here.”
Liu Shuhan was the only female courier among them. The male couriers usually took care of her. Liu Shuhan was the type of person who felt compelled to reciprocate kindness, so she often cooked and brought food for them. The relationship among the group was quite good.
They thought Liu Shuhan was upset because of the manager’s scolding. Liu Shuhan was too lazy to explain. She bundled up the express packages, tied them to the back seat of her electric scooter, and drove off.
“Hello, may I please speak to customer Cheng Mutou? I’m the delivery person from HT Logistics. I have a package for you here.” Liu Shuhan pulled out a package and realized the recipient had another one, and another, and another… In the end, Liu Shuhan took out a total of fifteen packages… She quickly apologized to the customer. “I’m sorry, that was my mistake. It’s not one, it’s fifteen…”
A familiar, very familiar, soft laugh came from the other end of the phone. “I’m home. Bring them up to me.”
Liu Shuhan was stunned. “Qiuyi?”
“Not bad, not bad. You still remember me; you didn’t lose your memory.”
“You… Why did you buy so many things?”
“I felt like it. Does it concern you? Hurry up and bring them up, or I’ll complain about you.”
A dial tone sounded, and Liu Shuhan didn’t dare to delay. She carried the tall stack of boxes to Cheng Qiuyi’s doorstep and knocked by bumping the door twice with her shoulder.
Cheng Qiuyi had just woken up and casually smoothed her hair before opening the door for her. A strap of her slip dress had slipped down her arm, partially exposing her chest, making Liu Shuhan’s throat tighten.
“The air conditioning is set so low in your house, and you’re wearing so little. Aren’t you afraid of catching a cold?” Liu Shuhan placed Cheng Qiuyi’s express packages by the door.
Cheng Qiuyi casually slipped on a jacket. “Come in.”
Liu Shuhan couldn’t help but feel that the hoodie Cheng Qiuyi was wearing looked familiar. “Hey, isn’t this my clothing? I wondered why I couldn’t find it. It turns out it was with you!”
“I told you to come in. Why are you standing outside?”
Liu Shuhan looked at her dirty shoes hesitantly. “I’m still busy delivering packages, so… I won’t go in. Remember to eat something later, something hot. I’m leaving now.”
“Liu Shuhan, if you don’t come in now, I’ll be angry,” Cheng Qiuyi said coldly, glaring at Liu Shuhan.
Liu Shuhan flinched, startled by her gaze, and instinctively jumped inside the door. Cheng Qiuyi then smiled, took her hand, and pressed her onto the sofa. “Look how sweaty you are from exhaustion. Drink some water and rest for a bit first.”
As soon as Liu Shuhan finished drinking water, Cheng Qiuyi brought out some sliced fruit. “Are you hungry after working all morning? Have some fruit to tide you over. A new restaurant opened nearby, and the food is quite good. I’ll take you to try it later.” She force-fed the fruit to Liu Shuhan, who had to chew hard with both cheeks bulging like a squirrel.
“I… I still have to work…” Liu Shuhan finally managed to swallow a mouthful of fruit and weakly protested.
Cheng Qiuyi put down the fruit plate and sighed. “Dullard, did I scare you?”
“Huh?” Liu Shuhan was confused. Where did that come from?
