- Chapter 5 - Blame It All On Evil Capitalism!
“Otherwise, why are you avoiding me?”
Huh?
Liu Shuhan was a little confused. “N-No, I’m not…” She wished she could see Cheng Qiuyi every day; how could she possibly be avoiding her?
“Then why have I invited you out so many times, and you haven’t agreed even once?” Cheng Qiuyi’s fingers were interlaced, resting on her knees, her gaze fixed on a corner of the coffee table. She looked a little sad.
Liu Shuhan rushed to explain, “I haven’t! I’ve really been too busy these past few days and couldn’t get away! Qiuyi, I really haven’t! You have to believe me!”
“Really?”
“Mm!” Liu Shuhan nodded her head like pounding garlic.
Cheng Qiuyi’s eyes darted, and a smile appeared on her face. “Dead Wood, it’s fine as long as you weren’t avoiding me.”
She continued, “Then when do you have free time? We said we’d go see a movie last time, and we still haven’t gone.”
Liu Shuhan thought hard. “I think I have a rotational rest day next Tuesday…”
“Why so long?” Cheng Qiuyi was dissatisfied.
“We’re short-staffed these days…”
“Then I’ll come pick you up then. This time, you are not allowed to go back on your word.”
“Okay, okay, okay! Reporting to the organization, I guarantee I won’t go back on my word!” Liu Shuhan grinned and gave Cheng Qiuyi a crooked salute, then stood up. “Then I’ll be leaving. I still have a big bag of packages, and I have to deliver them all today.”
“Dead Wood, have you considered switching jobs?” Cheng Qiuyi also stood up with her.
Liu Shuhan scratched her head. “Being a courier is quite good, you’re free and easy. I’m not used to staying in an office.”
“This job has you out in all kinds of weather. You’ve only been back at work for a few days, and you’ve already lost a size.” Cheng Qiuyi reached out and loosely cupped Liu Shuhan’s waist. Her beautiful eyebrows furrowed. The bit of weight Liu Shuhan had finally managed to gain while staying with her was all gone.
“Being thin is better looking. What woman doesn’t wish to be thinner?”
But I want to raise you to be fair and chubby, Cheng Qiuyi thought secretly. Preferably so chubby that the whole world rejects you. That way, you’ll have to stay obediently by my side and won’t think of going anywhere else.
“Ah, I won’t talk to you anymore, I really have to go. You take good care of yourself too, okay? If you need to put on extra clothes in an air-conditioned room, do it. If you catch a cold, you’re the one who suffers.”
Cheng Qiuyi was about to say more, but Liu Shuhan had already closed the door behind her. Cheng Qiuyi sat back down on the sofa, rubbing her temples, contemplating how she could make Liu Shuhan quit this exhausting job.
The next day, Liu Shuhan found Cheng Qiuyi’s packages again among the ones she had to deliver. This time, however, there were fewer than yesterday, only two.
Liu Shuhan dialed the number Cheng Qiuyi had left on the delivery slip again. “Beauty, you have a package.”
“I’m home. Come on up.”
Liu Shuhan delivered the items to Cheng Qiuyi and flashed her a toothy grin. “You’ve been buying a lot of stuff these two days, huh.”
Cheng Qiuyi accepted the items from her with a peculiar smile but didn’t say anything.
The smile sent a chill down Liu Shuhan’s spine. She quickly said goodbye and slipped away.
In the days that followed.
The third day, the fourth day, and up until the fifth day, Liu Shuhan had to deliver two or three packages to Cheng Qiuyi every day.
“Beauty, you have another package…”
Liu Shuhan finally understood the meaning of Cheng Qiuyi’s peculiar smile that day. When she handed the package to Cheng Qiuyi, she couldn’t hold it in anymore. “I mean, you even buy a toothbrush online?”
“How did you know it’s a toothbrush?”
“It’s written on the slip, isn’t it?”
Cheng Qiuyi glanced at the delivery slip and smiled. “It’s convenient to buy online.”
“The supermarket is right next to your complex.” Liu Shuhan was getting a little distraught. In high school, Cheng Qiuyi was famously diligent. How could she now be unwilling to even go downstairs to buy a toothbrush? She must have been corrupted by wicked capitalism during her years abroad.
Cheng Qiuyi placed the package inside and casually pinched Liu Shuhan’s nose. “You’re so busy these days that you’re nowhere to be seen. If I didn’t do this, could I see you?”
Liu Shuhan’s head exploded with a boom, and the tips of her ears turned pink. Cheng Qiuyi, how can you, a completely, completely straight girl, be so good at flirting? Once or twice is one thing, but you flirt every single time, every single time! You flirt and then run! Bad review!
She really has turned bad! Liu Shuhan thought indignantly. It’s all the fault of wicked capitalism!
However, being able to see Cheng Qiuyi every day was exactly what Liu Shuhan wanted. The moment she left Cheng Qiuyi’s apartment, she secretly posted the photo of Cheng Qiuyi she had taken onto Weibo, and sure enough, it received a “like” again.
Liu Shuhan had secretly photographed Cheng Qiuyi for five consecutive days and received one like from a stranger every day, and each time she had to block that person.
To find her Weibo account so accurately, and with an account that has no followers—only a ghost would believe it wasn’t the same person. Liu Shuhan was now in a standoff with this person. She wanted to see how many small accounts this person had and whether their accounts would run out before she reached her block list limit.
But this time, after the person liked the post, they actually sent her a private message.
[Beauty, how many times are you going to block me? Can you give me a solid number?]
Liu Shuhan was amused. [Who are you? How are you so sure I’m a woman?]
[That’s not important! Didn’t I just hit the like button? Did hitting like offend you?]
[Yes, it did. What about it?]
Liu Shuhan was still rushing to deliver packages. After sending this line, she shoved her phone into her pocket and ignored the stranger.
When she got home after work that evening, she found that the person was quite persistent, having sent more than a dozen private messages.
[Don’t be like that! I was wrong, is that okay?! I won’t hit like anymore!]
[Girl, can we follow each other?]
[Please follow each other, please follow each other, please follow each other…]
[Sis, are you still there?]
[If you don’t reply, I’m going to cry for you to see!]
Following that were indeed over ten messages of crying emojis.
Liu Shuhan found it hilarious. She slid her finger and sent two words: [Sure.]
This person is so bored. Liu Shuhan thought. I must be sick too, making online friends at my age.
Cheng Qiuyi looked at her phone and smiled when she saw the two words, “好啊” (Hǎo ā, “Sure/Okay”). Yes, the stranger who had liked Liu Shuhan’s posts for several days was her.
Cheng Qiuyi had long known about Liu Shuhan’s private account and had seen all the photos of various beauties in her Weibo feed. Last time, she was delighted to find that Liu Shuhan had posted a photo of her and casually hit the “like” button, only to be blocked by Liu Shuhan.
Cheng Qiuyi didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Liu Shuhan, this silly girl—she was hesitant and timid when she should be decisive, but completely ruthless and efficient when she shouldn’t be.
Fortunately, Liu Shuhan was reasonable. The posts for the next few days were all photos of her, which finally calmed Cheng Qiuyi’s anger somewhat.
Cheng Qiuyi had no other intention for adding Liu Shuhan than to tease her and see if this piece of wood was always so dense with everyone or only played dumb with her. But when she received the “Sure,” her heart was filled with a wave of sweetness.
This endearingly silly piece of wood—I can’t let her casually flirt with just anyone! I need to claim her quickly!
