- Chapter 8 - A Stone And A Wood
Liu Shuhan was lying on the bed, her mind filled with random thoughts, when her phone by her side vibrated slightly. She picked it up and saw a new private message on Weibo. She only had one follower on Weibo, so she knew who it was without guessing.
A Stone: [Are you there?]
A Stone was the stranger who had been blocked by Liu Shuhan several times in a row. After adding her, they had chatted occasionally, mostly with polite, empty talk. Liu Shuhan’s Weibo ID was “A Log,” so the person changed theirs to “A Stone.” Liu Shuhan didn’t know if this “stone” was male or female, but she tentatively imagined it was a beautiful woman, which at least allowed her to indulge in some fantasy.
A Log: [You’re not asleep yet?]
It was almost five in the morning, and there was actually another night owl like herself.
A Stone: [Aren’t you awake either?]
A Log: [The night is long, and I have no heart for sleep.]
A Stone: [(Sneering face) Why didn’t you post a photo of a beautiful woman today?]
The mention of Cheng Qiuyi made Liu Shuhan’s entire face scrunch up. She rolled over on the bed with a bitter expression and rapidly typed out a sentence.
[Big beauty’s taste is a bit too much; I need to take a break.]
A Stone: [What’s wrong? Did she confess to you?]
Liu Shuhan’s hand shook, and she dropped her phone, which landed clunk on her face. She scrambled up from the bed and asked the person on the other end: [How did you know that?]
Was this Stone a magic rock? How could she calculate so accurately?
A Stone: [Just a guess, didn’t expect it to be so accurate.]
A Log: [……]
A Stone: [Seeing how dejected you look, did you perhaps reject her?]
Liu Shuhan was stunned, [Sister, are you a fortune teller?]
A Stone: [Why did you reject her? Did you think she wasn’t good-looking?]
[Of course not!] Liu Shuhan typed a long paragraph, thought for a moment, and then deleted it all. [Our situation is too complicated; you wouldn’t understand.]
A Stone took a long time to send a sentence, so long that Liu Shuhan thought she had fallen asleep.
[Do you like her?]
Of course Liu Shuhan liked her. She liked Cheng Qiuyi down to her bones, but such delicate feelings seemed too personal to share with an outsider. Liu Shuhan didn’t answer A Stone’s question. She simply turned off her phone and stared blankly at the dark ceiling.
Liu Shuhan had known for a long time that she was a lesbian; it was innate. Her family was happy and loving, her parents were devoted to each other, and there were none of the external factors mentioned in books. She was naturally only drawn to women. Liu Shuhan realized this in junior high and was able to accept it after meeting Cheng Qiuyi.
For a long time, Liu Shuhan suffered from self-loathing. She felt she was a pervert. She was afraid to interact with any friends, fearing that they would see through her.
Only after meeting Cheng Qiuyi did Liu Shuhan realize that liking the same s3x wasn’t something to be afraid of. Cheng Qiuyi was so good; liking such a girl was natural, and it should be a joy that was almost overflowing, thinking of her was sweet, so how could there be fear?
Cheng Qiuyi was so wonderful; she deserved a life that could be exposed to the sunlight.
Cheng Qiuyi’s bedroom had a large floor-to-ceiling window, and at this moment, she was sitting cross-legged on the windowsill.
She held her phone in her hand. The Log in the private message box hadn’t responded for a long time. The only lit screen in the darkness finally couldn’t hold on and went dark.
Cheng Qiuyi’s hair was casually tied at the back of her head, and she held a cigarette between her lips, unlit.
Cheng Qiuyi developed a smoking habit the year Cheng Tianhong brought his mistress into the house.
That year, she lived wildly, smoking, drinking, gambling, and driving fast. She had experienced almost all of those so-called rebellious youth activities, even though her youth was already coming to an end. That year, she cut off contact with all her former friends, including Liu Shuhan. For no other reason than that Cheng Qiuyi’s appearance at the time was something she herself found repulsive.
Falling in love with Liu Shuhan was an accident in Cheng Qiuyi’s life. There was no rhyme or reason to emotion; when love came, it came.
It was just that she was too young then and didn’t understand relationships, or perhaps with Cheng Tianhong’s example before her, she scoffed at love. Love bound by a certificate was already so fragile, let alone the kind of love she and Liu Shuhan shared, which existed outside the bounds of law.
Cheng Qiuyi was afraid. She had Cheng Tianhong’s bl00d in her body. She was afraid that she would ultimately get what she wanted and then abandon it, just like Cheng Tianhong. Liu Shuhan was a good girl. Rather than letting her get hurt, Cheng Qiuyi would rather bury her feelings forever in her heart.
So Cheng Qiuyi fled abroad. Time and distance were the best medicine. They could dilute her hatred for Cheng Tianhong and naturally also dilute her love for Liu Shuhan.
It didn’t. Her hatred for Cheng Tianhong remained, and her love for Liu Shuhan grew even more, like a tender shoot breaking through the soil, growing into a towering tree in her heart.
Cheng Qiuyi wanted to be with Liu Shuhan, to be together for a lifetime. So she worked hard to break her body’s dependence on that absurd lifestyle and worked hard to become someone who could provide a safe haven for Liu Shuhan.
[Do you like her?]
Heaven knows how much courage it took for Cheng Qiuyi to send those words, but the Log on the other end never replied.
Cheng Qiuyi stared out the window, her fingers flipping rapidly. The lighter drew a few beautiful arcs in her hand. Cheng Qiuyi hadn’t smoked in a long time, but at this moment, she especially missed the pain of nicotine scratching against her lungs.
The flame flashed a few times, and Cheng Qiuyi finally used two fingers to pluck the cigarette from her mouth, placing it on the windowsill along with the lighter. Something she had quit, there was no need to get addicted to it again.
Liu Shuhan, even if you want to be a shrinking turtle, in this lifetime, you can only shrink by my side.
Liu Shuhan was a shrinking turtle, and a fast-running one at that. At seven in the morning, when Cheng Qiuyi went to knock on her door, she had already tidied up the room and slipped away unnoticed.
“…” Cheng Qiuyi looked at the empty room, feeling like she was about to crush the doorknob in the next second.
Liu Shuhan, you wait.
Liu Shuhan was at a breakfast stall buying steamed buns, and she inexplicably shivered despite the summer heat.
“Boss, two red bean paste buns!” Liu Shuhan shook her shoulders to shake off the inexplicable unease and said to the breakfast stall owner.
It wasn’t that Liu Shuhan deliberately wanted to escape. It was just that… Liu Shuhan really didn’t know how to face Cheng Qiuyi. Whenever she thought of the strange atmosphere last night, her heart pounded erratically, so she had no choice but to escape.
Let’s just leave it at that. Things will work out eventually; she won’t worry about it. Liu Shuhan thought, biting into the bun. She didn’t have many skills, but she had one virtue: she was easygoing. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have secretly crushed on Cheng Qiuyi for so many years and acted as if nothing was wrong.
Unlucky in love, work still had to be done. Liu Shuhan got back on the road with her small electric scooter.
There weren’t many express packages today. By four o’clock in the afternoon, Liu Shuhan had delivered almost all of them to her customers. It was “almost” because at this moment, she still had one package in her hand, the recipient: Cheng Mutou (Cheng Dullard).
Liu Shuhan was at a loss. She stopped downstairs at Cheng Qiuyi’s building with the package for a while, finally stomped her foot, turned her electric scooter around, and drove away. She sent a text message to Cheng Qiuyi from the community gate: [Dear customer, the HT Logistics delivery person has placed your package at the guard station. Please pick it up promptly. To refuse the delivery, please call 187XXXXXXXX.]
In less than a minute, Cheng Qiuyi’s call came in.
“Liu Shuhan, if you don’t personally hand the item to me within two minutes, I will complain about you.” Great Beauty Cheng’s voice on the phone sounded particularly cold.
Liu Shuhan could imagine the expression on Cheng Qiuyi’s face as she said that. Without a second thought, she turned around and rode back downstairs to her building.
Just kidding, a complaint would mean a deduction from her salary. How could pride be more important than actual cash?
