Chapter 2: An Unexpected Power-Up
Yuan Yishan lay on the floor, her thick eyelashes casting two fan-shaped shadows on her cheeks.
Gu Jin’s gaze was fixed on her, aloof yet forceful. A minute passed, and she still hadn’t moved.
The light, having received no response for a prolonged period, lost some of its authority. She narrowed her eyes and spoke in a cold, detached voice.
“Aren’t you going to get up? Still pretending?”
The other person remained completely still.
The sudden power outage had caused the server to go down, and they had barely managed to get it back up. It was a critical time for the Double Eleven sales rush, so they had to remain on high alert.
Gu Jin didn’t have the energy to waste here.
After a few seconds of hesitation, she crouched down and tentatively poked the person’s side with her index finger.
No reaction.
She added a little more force and poked again.
Still no reaction.
Something’s wrong. This person… their condition isn’t right. Could they be…?
A sudden panic seized Gu Jin. She turned her head and leaned in for a closer look.
Then she pushed her again with more force.
“Hey! You, wake up!”
It was no use.
Almost by instinct, she reached out and felt the person’s philtrum.
The warm touch on her fingertips made her let out a long sigh of relief.
Thank goodness, she’s warm!
What should she do now? Call an ambulance?
What if the person woke up before the ambulance arrived?
Besides, the project team working all night would create a scene and cause panic.
After weighing her options, she decided it was safer to move the person to the sofa first and then find a way to contact a private doctor.
She stretched out her arms and, using all her strength, went for a princess carry, which caused her to stagger.
Gu Jin was immediately stunned. She thought, this person… she looks so frail and small, but why is she so heavy?
In the end, she slid her hands under the person’s armpits and dragged her directly onto the sofa. She stumbled and struggled, using a great deal of effort to finally get her there.
At this point, she no longer cared about being graceful or proper. She got on top of the person and began to shift her into a central position.
She didn’t kneel steadily, and her arm went numb, causing her to fall directly onto the other person’s body.
Two soft areas pressed tightly against each other. Gu Jin’s heart suddenly stopped, and a wave of numbness spread through her body.
System booting up, restoring. Please wait…
A powerful current flowed through Yuan Yishan’s body.
Warm light filtered through her hair and scattered onto her face, making her already delicate features appear even more radiant and flawless.
Gu Jin used the leverage to get up, her gaze scanning from top to bottom. Her mind went blank for a second.
This person’s face is strangely beautiful.
Normally, no matter how well a person takes care of themselves, you can still see tiny pores up close. But her skin was flawless, and her bone structure was so perfect it gave the illusion of being a work of art, yet it didn’t look like the result of cosmetic surgery.
It was as if… she had jumped out of a virtual world as a cute cartoon character…
…
“Sister, what’s going on? You almost scared me to death!”
The familiar voice of her boss came from the hallway.
Gu Jin shivered and scrambled up. Before she could get off the person, he was already at the door.
“You two… what is this…?”
Pei He’s eyes were wide with shock.
It was a critical moment for the Double Eleven sales rush, with tens of thousands of users waiting for the midnight flash sale. And his technical director was currently on top of the new mood booster he had hired.
Is this… is this logical?
Boss Pei hadn’t had time to process his emotions.
Gu Jin had already moved off her.
As the two of them looked at each other, she subconsciously adjusted her collar.
Pei He took in this subtle movement and looked away, his expression unreadable.
A sudden, inexplicable feeling of shame rose in Gu Jin. Soon, her pale cheeks were flushed with a rosy hue.
“She fainted…”
“That…”
The two spoke at the same time, then fell into a simultaneous silence.
The atmosphere became subtly awkward.
Gu Jin took three seconds to compose herself and hide her unnecessary embarrassment.
She didn’t explain further, instead returning to her usual cool and distant demeanor.
“The circuit was cut, so I restarted the server. It’s not a program performance issue, so you don’t have to worry!”
Pei He cleared his throat.
“Okay, um… the next two days of Double Eleven are critical, so Sister, please pay extra attention and work hard!”
“Mhm.”
Gu Jin responded faintly.
Pei He glanced at Yuan Yishan, who was still unconscious on the sofa.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll get going now!”
The two of them were college classmates. Gu Jin was a year ahead of him, but they were both in the Internet of Things major and were students under the same professor.
There was also another junior female student, and the three of them started a business before they even graduated, focusing on cross-border e-commerce trade.
Pei He was in charge of business, while Gu Jin and the junior student were the main technical support from the beginning.
The junior student’s family was wealthy, and she went abroad for a sabbatical right after graduation, so now she could only work part-time on product design.
As the core technical person, Gu Jin had to bear all the technical responsibilities by herself.
Currently, Yuan Sheng Electronic Technology has been established for 8 years and is in a stable growth phase.
Although Pei He was the boss, the technical department had always been under Gu Jin’s authority.
And he had always held his senior sister in high regard.
So, even though he couldn’t understand the situation, he was very tactful and prepared to give them some space.
Just as he was about to turn around, Gu Jin suddenly said,
“Do you know her?”
Boss Pei paused for a second, seeming to understand something.
“Oh, right. Yishan is the new mood booster I hired a while ago.”
“I was going to tell you about it when you got back from your business trip, but I haven’t had a chance yet…”
Gu Jin frowned slightly at the words.
Pei He immediately understood.
“Sister, you can arrange it however you like! Just arrange it however you like!”
“Um… we have a meeting later, so I’ll go connect remotely first!”
With that, he didn’t even give her a chance to react and quickly left, closing the door behind him.
Gu Jin: …
Yuan Yishan had already regained consciousness when Pei He entered the room.
The little core sprite’s data was sampled from reality, and the program’s execution also simulated real-life scenarios.
She could understand the person saying she was a new mood booster.
But what she couldn’t understand was why, as a core R&D person, she didn’t have the permission to modify the internal program.
If she couldn’t modify the internal program, how could she return to the real world?
Just as Yuan Yishan was at a loss, the system voice in her mind sounded again.
System update complete
Congratulations to the host for passing the basic assessment for Yuan Sheng Electronic Technology’s Programmer Mood Booster. You have gained 10 points.
Your current system points are 10 points.
???
“What does that mean?”
When system points reach 100 million, the program will enter the next round of upgrade service. The host can use this opportunity to escape back to reality.
“Escape back to reality? Why escape? Where is my modification permission?”
You have no permission.
“The core R&D person has no permission?”
During research and development, you died suddenly from overwork. Your soul fused with my core program before you passed out.
You are now just a piece of code inside me.
“A piece of code? Does that mean I died and transmigrated?”
You can understand it that way. To be more precise, you haven’t completely died yet. Your body is currently in the ICU.
…
“Then can I go back?”
Yes, you can. You have successfully bound a user. User satisfaction points can accelerate the system upgrade speed.
The system disappeared after speaking.
Yuan Yishan was half-skeptical.
She never imagined that as a senior programmer in a materialistic modern world, she would bizarrely become a piece of code inside a robot, subject to a machine. Even fantasy novels wouldn’t write a plot like this.
But the sharp, sizzling electrical sensation in her mind when she was trying to modify the program was strong and real.
Then it said it was low on power, and she truly lost consciousness. So how did she wake up?
This series of bizarre events, when put together, made her have to believe that she had truly transmigrated.
At that moment, a cool sensation welled up in her consciousness, and a drawing of a person’s finger bones appeared on the control panel of her electronic brain.
—It was a woman’s half-hand, slender and long.
Yuan Yishan then realized that it was the so-called user, who was checking her body temperature.
If the previous events were an illusion, she could now see such a clear image even with her eyes closed. This was definitely not something a normal person could do.
Since things had come to this, she had no choice but to believe.
Although 100 million points seemed like a remote possibility, it was at least a glimmer of hope.
If the humans here found out she was a robot, her situation would become even more dangerous.
Under the current circumstances, she had to first find a way to stay with the user, and then slowly figure out how to get favorability points from her.
Gu Jin had originally wanted to ask Pei He for help, but that person ran off faster than a rabbit. She just checked her body temperature, and everything was normal. Only then did she carefully place a thin jacket over Yuan Yishan.
After that, she pretended to be calm and took out her phone to book a private doctor online.
…
A few minutes later, Yuan Yishan, who was monitoring the increasingly slow human breathing, suddenly realized something and abruptly opened her eyes.
A faint, slender metallic light came into view. It was clearly a SIM card ejector pin from an original phone.
The woman was looking down, intently focused on her philtrum, with the silver pin in her hand, ready to pierce it.
Oh… my!
How could there be such a stupid person in the world who would use a SIM card ejector pin as an emergency needle?
Yuan Yishan felt a surge of fear. It was a good thing she was invincible now, otherwise, that poke would have made her break out in a cold sweat.
She rubbed her head and feigned a look of confusion and innocence, her soft voice barely audible.
“My head is so dizzy. Where am I?”
Gu Jin had been too focused and hadn’t realized the person had woken up.
The pin was still in her hand, and her gaze hadn’t shifted.
“Sister, why are you looking at me like that? Is there something on my face?”
Yuan Yishan subconsciously touched her flawless, porcelain-like face.
Her pair of black, bright eyes blinked gently, shining like stars and colliding with a brilliant flash of electrical light.
“…”
Gu Jin opened her mouth, but no words came out.
