Chapter 10: I’ll Hold You, And You Won’t Be Cold Anymore
Chu Weiyue teaches English for two classes, but she’s not a homeroom teacher, which significantly lightens her workload.
After teaching another class in the afternoon, Chu Weiyue finished grading homework, prepared her lessons, and clocked out.
When she got home, Jiang Yiqiu hadn’t returned yet.
She called her, and Jiang Yiqiu said she was about to get off work, so Chu Weiyue went to the kitchen to make dinner.
Since Jiang Yiqiu came back into her life, Chu Weiyue’s interest in cooking had surged. She checked the refrigerator and finally decided to make sweet and sour pork ribs.
Then, wrinkling her nose, she took out a bunch of spinach, which she disliked but Jiang Yiqiu loved, for a quick stir-fry.
The sound of the door opening rang out. Chu Weiyue peeked out from the kitchen and saw the familiar black suit and white shirt, instantly recalling the photo she’d saved on her phone that day, kept accidentally stumbling upon, and looked at countless times.
Chu Weiyue felt a little awkward, but on the surface, she remained very calm. She proactively stepped forward and asked about Jiang Yiqiu’s condition: “Your neck… the injury, is it okay? I’ll put more medicine on it later.”
Jiang Yiqiu: “I applied medicine at the company. It’s nothing serious.”
She then looked toward the kitchen: “Do you need my help?”
Chu Weiyue shook her head: “Didn’t I say you don’t need to help? Go rest, dinner will be ready soon.”
After busying herself and finishing dinner, the two sat down to eat.
Chu Weiyue took her seat and very consciously focused on the sweet and sour pork ribs, pushing the spinach with scrambled eggs that Jiang Yiqiu loved toward her: “You eat this, you eat.”
Before her chopsticks even touched the sweet and sour pork, a chopstick full of spinach appeared in her bowl out of nowhere.
Chu Weiyue’s eyes, which had been sparkling while staring at the ribs, instantly deflated. Her beautiful face was the same color as the spinach.
She stared gloomily at the perpetrator.
Jiang Yiqiu helplessly said: “Eating more vegetables is good for your health.”
Chu Weiyue said faintly: “I cook for you, and you feed me vegetables. This is simply repaying kindness with enmity.”
“…”
Chu Weiyue mumbled softly: “If you weren’t here, I wouldn’t even stir-fry spinach. I wouldn’t touch it.”
Jiang Yiqiu, who was initially unsure how to respond, immediately said when this came out: “So, in the two years I was gone, you didn’t eat vegetables properly?”
Chu Weiyue’s expression froze: “Uh…”
No need for an answer, Jiang Yiqiu already got the message from her reaction: “I knew it.”
“Of course I did!” Chu Weiyue explained loudly but guiltily, “I’m an adult. I know how to take care of myself.”
Jiang Yiqiu nodded: “Eating once a week also counts as eating.”
Chu Weiyue stopped speaking.
“You must eat it.” Jiang Yiqiu pushed the dish toward her, her tone allowing no argument, giving a mandatory command.
In just a few sentences, Chu Weiyue willingly handed the initiative back to Jiang Yiqiu, completely unable to match her. In the end, under Jiang Yiqiu’s supervision, the dish was divided equally into two portions, one for each of them.
Chu Weiyue dared not be angry but didn’t dare speak. She ate her portion of the spinach with tears in her eyes.
She was so mad that her cheeks puffed out like a bun.
Jiang Yiqiu promised to reduce the amount of vegetables tomorrow night before she managed to coax her back to good spirits.
After dinner was the relaxation time for the working-class people. Chu Weiyue’s mother called via video.
Seeing it was a video call, Jiang Yiqiu subconsciously wanted to step away to let them talk.
Chu Weiyue unceremoniously pressed her down onto the sofa and pulled her in front of the camera: “We’re this familiar, why avoid it? What’s mine is yours. My mom isn’t your mom?”
While talking, she answered the phone.
The screen showed Chu Weiyue and Jiang Yiqiu’s heads pressed together, two faces squeezed into the frame.
On the other side was Chu Mu, smiling as she looked at them: “Yiqiu is back. Welcome, welcome. You look even prettier after not seeing you for so long.”
Chu Weiyue had told her mother about Jiang Yiqiu’s return yesterday, so seeing Jiang Yiqiu on the screen was no surprise.
Jiang Yiqiu greeted the person on the other side: “Auntie, I’m back. I’ll come see you when I have a day off this weekend.”
“Good, good. When you have time, you and Weiyue come back together,” Chu Mu replied.
Anyone who had met Chu Mu and Chu Weiyue would instantly recognize them as mother and daughter. Chu Weiyue resembled her mother by six or seven parts, especially their eyes, which were uncannily beautiful and identical—round and bright, with a very deep pupil color, reminding one of expensive black diamonds displayed in an auction showcase, glittering with a clear light.
The three chatted for a while. It was getting late, and Chu Mu was preparing to rest.
Before hanging up, she asked: “You two don’t have anything else planned for tomorrow, right? I’ll come over and see you.”
Chu Weiyue was planning to have a good talk with her about health and well-being and take her mother for a comprehensive physical examination this weekend.
Although she didn’t know the plot of the original novel regarding herself, she knew more or less about the subsequent development of any character who appeared in the book.
Her relatives and friends were, of course, a key focus.
Thinking of the plot about her mother in the original novel, Chu Weiyue sorted out her thoughts. She had to prepare in advance.
When Chu Mu said she was coming over, Chu Weiyue’s normal thought process assumed she meant in the evening. After a moment, she said: “Sure, we don’t have anything special going on.”
She added with a vigilant look: “Don’t buy me a bunch of green vegetables. There are plenty in the fridge. It’ll be a waste if we can’t finish them.”
Chu Mu was displeased: “Is that the kind of image your mother has in your heart?”
Chu Weiyue nodded seriously: “What else?”
Chu Mu didn’t argue with her: “Let’s talk about it tomorrow when we meet. I’ll get ready now.”
After hanging up, she washed up and got ready for bed. Stepping out of the bathroom, Chu Weiyue saw a bulge on the inner side of the bed, like a round, fragrant custard bun. Looking closer, Jiang Yiqiu had very consciously climbed into her bed and settled in.
It was completely a continuation of their previous sleeping arrangement, clearly intending to sleep with her.
The massive mistake she made in her dream last night was still vivid in her mind. Chu Weiyue had intended to suggest sleeping in separate rooms, but she hadn’t expected Jiang Yiqiu to be so proactive.
Since the person was already undressed and lying down, bringing up changing rooms now seemed inappropriate. After all, they used to sleep together often. If she brought it up, Jiang Yiqiu might get upset again and say they had become distant.
With this thought, Chu Weiyue swallowed the words that were about to come out, quietly turned off the light, and got into bed.
Time to sleep.
Chu Weiyue lay in the quilt. Young people have strong body heat, and she warmed up quickly. The current environment was perfect for sleeping, but Chu Weiyue felt tense and completely sleepless.
She frantically told herself that she absolutely must restrain herself and must not make any further inappropriate moves.
For the sake of their revolutionary friendship, revolutionary friendship!
Chu Weiyue silently recited “revolutionary friendship” a hundred times, reminding herself to be absolutely restrained. This time, they must definitely sleep separately; she couldn’t even touch a single strand of Jiang Yiqiu’s hair.
Unexpectedly, after ten minutes of lying down, there was movement beside her.
She quietly opened her eyes. The person lying peacefully moved, seemingly inching closer to her.
Chu Weiyue was alarmed, screaming wildly in her heart: Don’t come over! I really will refuse! I will resist!
The person next to her was completely unaware of her internal anguish. With a rustling sound, the corner of the quilt that Chu Weiyue had tucked in was lifted slightly.
Next, a slender, cool hand, bringing a little cold air with it, burrowed into her blanket and rested on her chest. A smoothly contoured leg followed, lightly resting on Chu Weiyue’s leg.
It even tried to rub against her inner thigh.
Chu Weiyue held her breath.
W-w-what is this person trying to do?
Just before she planned to speak out in protest, Jiang Yiqiu’s voice sounded in the dark: “Yueyue… I’m cold.”
The voice was light and soft, like a small, soft animal shivering and contracting in the cold wind, trembling slightly, truly pitiful.
Her internal struggle and resistance instantly faded away.
Chu Weiyue sighed heavily, actively reaching out her warm and strong arm, taking the incoming wrist in her hand. She leaned over with the other hand to hug her waist, pulling her into her quilt and embracing her.
The warm body enveloped the cold one, providing a continuous source of heat. Their skin was pressed tightly together, inseparable. Chu Weiyue’s voice was deliberately lowered and gentle: “I’ll hold you, and you won’t be cold anymore.”
