Chapter 12: If Only It Could Be Like This Forever
Chu Weiyue watched her mother’s expression transform from being on high alert to full of confusion, and finally to relief, a live demonstration of a major facial change in under a minute. A question mark slowly appeared above her head.
What was that all about?
However, she didn’t ask directly. She instinctively pulled Jiang Yiqiu tighter into her embrace, lest Chu Mu see anything she shouldn’t: “Mom, please wait in the living room for a moment. We’ll be out as soon as we’re ready.”
Dressing up and stepping out, Chu Weiyue headed straight to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
“Mom, why did you suddenly show up so early? We weren’t prepared.”
“Didn’t I tell you yesterday I was coming? How is it sudden?” Chu Mu was displeased. “Do you even have me, your mother, in your heart?”
Recalling last night’s conversation, Chu Weiyue understood.
She had only said she would come today, but not when today.
Okay, 6:30 AM was indeed within the scope of “today.”
Chu Weiyue didn’t know whether to laugh or cry: “Yes, yes, yes, you came at the right time. It’s my fault for not being prepared to greet you.”
Chu Mu was finally satisfied and approached the kitchen doorway to watch Chu Weiyue busy herself.
Chu Weiyue: “Your Majesty, do you want to help your daughter?”
Chu Mu calmly replied: “If I have to make breakfast, wouldn’t that mean the breakfasts I’ve made for over ten years were feeding an ungrateful person?”
Chu Weiyue laughed: “Alright, you rest. I’ll handle it.”
The kitchen seemed to be the daily must-visit celebrity check-in spot at Chu Weiyue’s home. One Chu Mu wasn’t enough; Jiang Yiqiu also came over.
Before she could even step through the kitchen door, Chu Mu grabbed her: “No need for you. Both of us can rest. She can manage by herself.”
The moment Jiang Yiqiu arrived, the person who had been working quickly under Chu Mu’s watchful eyes almost sent a raw egg to its next life, fumbling with it for several rounds before holding it steady.
Chu Weiyue subconsciously glanced at Jiang Yiqiu. The other party’s eyes held a smile and she didn’t say much. Chu Weiyue cleared her throat: “Don’t both of you crowd around here and stare at me like I’m some rare animal. Hurry up and go wash up and wait to eat. …I get nervous here.”
Who was making her nervous? The name she had mumbled was ambiguous. Chu Mu self-consciously took the blame and teased her: “What, your mom watching you cook makes you nervous?”
Chu Weiyue casually played along: “Nervous, extremely nervous.”
“Fine, I’ll leave this to you. We’ll wait to sample Chef Chu’s craftsmanship,” she said, then pulled Jiang Yiqiu away.
Since they had to go to work soon, Chu Weiyue didn’t make breakfast too complicated and quickly served it on the table.
Chu Mu lowered her head to sip her porridge. Chu Weiyue looked up and saw a few scattered gray hairs amidst her neatly groomed black hair.
Although it was inevitable to have a few gray hairs as one aged, it still felt a little bittersweet for a child to see them.
Chu Weiyue brought up the matter she had been pondering all night with Chu Mu.
She was no ordinary person now; she was someone who knew the plot of the book and had an “ace up her sleeve.”
Although the “cheat” couldn’t be used on herself, she was determined to make it work effectively for the people she cared about.
The plot regarding Chu Mu in the book was sparsely described, with the main focus being a major surgery she underwent five years later.
Remembering the original text, Chu Weiyue’s expression became serious. Since she knew the plot, she had to prevent it early and couldn’t wait until surgery was unavoidable, by which time it would be too late.
“Mom, I’ve booked a physical examination for you this Saturday.”
Chu Mu was open-minded, unlike some elders who would frown and say, “I’m perfectly healthy. You’re just wasting money.” But the suggestion came suddenly, and Chu Mu was still taken aback: “Why check up when I’m fine?”
“You should have regular check-ups even when you’re fine. Prevention is the best cure, don’t you know?” Chu Weiyue said earnestly.
Chu Mu was a listener and knew Chu Weiyue meant well. Her daughter had grown up and knew how to be considerate, which warmed her heart, and she agreed.
Then Chu Weiyue mentioned some ordinary lifestyle precautions, telling her mother to stop eating so many sweets and control her appetite.
Chu Mu agreed verbally, but who knows how much she truly absorbed.
She knew that saying more now was just lip service, and nine times out of ten, it would go in one ear and out the other, so she stopped for the time being.
It wouldn’t be too late to talk about it after the physical examination provided real data.
Listening to the mother and daughter exchange words, superficially engaging but genuinely caring for each other, Jiang Yiqiu’s eyes showed relief, mixed with a hint of envy.
A trace of warmth, an urge to help them, subtly crossed her heart. What she had done before was right.
At the table, the conversation was mostly between Chu Weiyue and Chu Mu. Jiang Yiqiu mostly listened quietly, occasionally interjecting a few words.
After reminding Chu Mu, the mother, in turn, began to nag the two younger ones.
The most common topics were naturally the ones she had been nagging about since they were small: eating well and exercising properly.
“Xiao Qiu has a weak constitution. Take good care of her usually. Don’t just exercise by yourself; take her with you. Both of you must be healthy, understand?”
Chu Weiyue naturally agreed seriously.
Then came the most annoying issue: eating. Because Chu Weiyue hated vegetables, the family had truly struggled with this.
Every time this topic came up, her face would turn frighteningly ugly, looking as if she wished to die on the spot, and this time was no exception.
“Eat properly, especially eat more vegetables, do you hear? I love vegetables so much, how did I give birth to a daughter who is such a picky eater?” Chu Mu chattered reproachfully. “I’m starting to suspect you insisted on moving out to live alone just so you could avoid eating vegetables.”
Chu Weiyue didn’t like hearing this. She couldn’t let Chu Mu ruin her reputation in front of Jiang Yiqiu: “Pure slander! I moved out for convenience for work, didn’t I? I wanted you to come live with me, but you refused, and now you’re turning around and blaming me?”
The two argued back and forth, each having their own point. Fortunately, Jiang Yiqiu was there this time. Catching her friend’s pleading gaze, she quickly mediated: “Auntie, don’t worry. I’m watching her. Yueyue has been very obedient these past few days. She even voluntarily stir-fried spinach yesterday, and I supervised her eating half the dish. With me here, you can rest assured.”
Chu Weiyue nodded vigorously: “Exactly, exactly!”
“Qiuqiu, it’s so good that you’re back.” Chu Weiyue was moved and held Jiang Yiqiu’s hand, almost tearing up: “I’m lucky to have you to protect me and speak up for me. You don’t know how much I suffered in the two years you weren’t here.”
Chu Mu retorted irritably: “So, this is my fault now?”
“If you were half as worry-free as Yiqiu, I wouldn’t nag so much,” she said, then looked at Jiang Yiqiu with a look of relief: “It’s good that you’re here, Auntie is much more at ease.”
She then showed a look of heartfelt emotion: “I’ll be relieved as long as you two are together and well. If only it could be like this forever.”
“Does that even need to be said?” Chu Weiyue replied naturally. “Qiuqiu and I will, of course, be together forever.”
As she spoke, she picked up a fried egg and placed it in Jiang Yiqiu’s bowl.
Crispy, delicious, medium-cooked, soft-centered egg. Qiuqiu loved it the most.
Chu Weiyue’s tone was casual, as if stating an undeniable minor fact: “Why ‘if only’? Mom, don’t jinx us.”
Chu Mu instinctively felt that something wasn’t quite right but couldn’t put her finger on it.
Oh well, as long as the two girls were fine, she shouldn’t worry too much. Chu Mu quickly agreed: “Yes, yes, yes, forever. You two should be best friends forever.”
The two chatted enthusiastically, only Jiang Yiqiu remained silent, her eyes sweeping over Chu Weiyue and Chu Mu’s faces. She tugged at the corner of her mouth, her expression complex and difficult to describe.
Like this forever?
No, that wouldn’t do.
She had once thought so, but she couldn’t accept it now.
She was too greedy; she wanted more.
She wanted everything.
Chu Weiyue saw her silence and called her name: “Qiuqiu, isn’t that right?”
Jiang Yiqiu snapped back to attention, showing a clear and harmless smile: “Yes, of course, it has to be forever.”
