Chapter 13: Of Course, They’re a Couple
Since both had to go to work, Chu Mu didn’t stay long and left with them after breakfast.
Chu Weiyue left the house, ran into Wang Jie in the garage, exchanged greetings, and hurried off to school. The first thing she did upon reaching her desk was to continue grading the seemingly endless pile of homework.
“Teacher Chu, congratulations!”
While she was busy, a teacher walked in and shouted loudly right as she entered, drawing everyone’s attention.
“Teacher Liu, why are you here?” The person being addressed looked puzzled, not knowing what she was congratulating her for. She stood up to greet her, “What’s wrong?”
Teacher Liu winked at her, her face beaming with joy: “The results for the teaching competition are out.”
This was the competition Chu Weiyue had participated in recently, and the results came out quite quickly.
No need to ask; the other party’s joyful expression already indicated the outcome.
Teacher Liu didn’t keep her in suspense and said with a smile: “You got first place in your group! That’s amazing, Teacher Chu.”
Chu Weiyue was delighted, naturally happy, but still humbly said: “Just good luck. The text I drew that day was exactly one I had prepared thoroughly.”
“Now you’ll be busy. You need to prepare for the semi-finals. Go for it and win a first prize for our school.”
Everyone else in the office heard the news and was about to come over to congratulate her. Just as they stood up, in the blink of an eye, the person who had just been standing in the center of the office suddenly vanished. Looking around, it turned out she had gone back to her desk and was fiddling with her phone.
What was she doing in such a hurry?
As others approached to say something, Chu Weiyue quickly said: “Wait, wait, I have something important to take care of.”
Since she said that, no one else rushed forward.
As for the important matter—
Chu Weiyue tapped open Jiang Yiqiu’s chat window. After a moment’s consideration, she decided to appear humble in front of Jiang Yiqiu.
Otherwise, it might look like she was too eager to claim credit with Qiuqiu.
The Sun Was Rolled into a Ball by Me: The results for the teaching competition are out. I accidentally got first place in the group.
The Sun Was Rolled into a Ball by Me: The competition was too weak, and I barely prepared for the text I drew. I could still get first place just by improvising. Sigh, it’s boring.
Jiang Yiqiu, of course, was not stingy with praise, complimenting Chu Weiyue until her tail wagged, sweeter than if she had eaten two ounces of candy.
The other teachers watched her alone, doing whatever “important matter” it was, giggling at the screen, exchanging puzzled glances.
The workday ended, and Chu Weiyue drove home.
Tomorrow was Wednesday, and she could already see the tail end of the weekend. Life seemed to have hope again.
Just like students look forward to holidays, teachers also look forward to breaks.
She drove the car into the underground garage, took the elevator upstairs, and ran into her neighbor, Wang Jie, returning from work. They chatted as they entered the elevator.
After a few sentences, her pocket vibrated, and Chu Weiyue took out her phone.
Wang Jie subconsciously glanced at it and saw her wallpaper. Her eyes lit up: “Oh, Xiao Chu, are you into celebrity chasing?”
Chu Weiyue was confused, wondering why she suddenly asked this, but she still answered: “No, but I do have a few actors I like. What’s up, Sister Wang?”
She quite liked Jin Ning recently, but only enjoyed watching her films and the characters she played. At most, she would pause to look if she scrolled past her online, which was far from being a fan.
Wang Jie pointed at her phone: “Then which celebrity is your wallpaper?”
A celebrity? Where was the celebrity?
Chu Weiyue didn’t immediately realize, and subconsciously switched to the home screen.
Then she understood.
The screen showed a photo of a young woman wearing a white dress. With snow-white skin, red lips, and bright, charming eyes, her appearance was gentle and elegant. She held a vibrant white camellia in her hand, her smile serene and gentle, making it hard to tell who was more beautiful, the person or the flower.
Jiang Yiqiu had been staying at her place for two days but hadn’t met Wang Jie yet, so it was normal that she didn’t recognize her.
Chu Weiyue explained: “She’s not a celebrity. She’s my best friend.”
Her tone was unconsciously tinged with a sense of pride and showing off—Since you saw it, I’ll tell you. Isn’t she beautiful?
Wang Jie suddenly understood and couldn’t help but compliment her several times: “That’s your best friend? She’s so pretty. I thought she was a celebrity.”
Jiang Yiqiu’s looks were always presentable. Although Chu Weiyue had been listening to people praise her best friend since childhood until her ears were numb, she still couldn’t help but feel pleased.
While praising her, Wang Jie took another look.
A feeling of oddness arose in her heart. Do young people nowadays all use their best friend’s photo as their phone wallpaper?
She remembered the sense of ritual in Chu Weiyue’s careful dressing up when she went to pick her up last Sunday, and she had the same doubt then: Does picking up a best friend require dressing up so elaborately? It’s like going on a date.
Wang Jie cautiously asked: “Then your best friend’s wallpaper…”
Chu Weiyue puffed out her chest: “It’s me.”
Wang Jie laughed heartily: “You two really are good sisters.”
Wang Jie was nearing forty, but she always maintained a strong curiosity and desire for exploration. She couldn’t quite figure it out, but the thoughts of young people must be interconnected.
Back home, Wang Jie immediately messaged her cousin who was pursuing a master’s degree.
Wealth and Riches: Would you use your best friend’s photo as your phone wallpaper?
Graduate Student by Day, Death Researcher by Night: ?
Graduate Student by Day, Death Researcher by Night: Of course.
Wang Jie suddenly realized.
So, it was normal.
The other person replied immediately.
Graduate Student by Day, Death Researcher by Night: But I would only use her ugly photos to mock her mercilessly.
Wealth and Riches: …
Wealth and Riches: Then what kind of people would use the other person’s good-looking photo as wallpaper?
Graduate Student by Day, Death Researcher by Night: Why even ask? Of course, they’re a couple.
Upon hearing this, Wang Jie felt enlightened.
Young minds are so useful, immediately solving her confusion.
Their relationship is probably not simple.
Today was similar to yesterday. Chu Weiyue got home and busied herself in the kitchen, waiting for Jiang Yiqiu to return for dinner.
Then, at the dinner table, under the oppression of superior authority, she continued to eat vegetables.
She continued to dare not be angry but didn’t dare speak.
However, today was slightly different.
After dinner, Jiang Yiqiu handed her a box: “This is for you.”
Chu Weiyue’s eyes lit up: “A gift?”
Jiang Yiqiu nodded.
Chu Weiyue took it, feeling a bit embarrassed: “Why are you giving me things every other day, it’s like we’re something.”
Jiang Yiqiu never said much openly, and always had a reasonable explanation: “Didn’t you get first place in the teaching competition? This is the prize for the first-place winner.”
Chu Weiyue was surprised: “I just told you this morning. You prepared it so quickly?”
Jiang Yiqiu: “I prepared it in advance.”
Chu Weiyue was confused.
“I knew you wouldn’t have any problems. As long as you want it, you can win,” Jiang Yiqiu blinked.
Chu Weiyue was touched. Holding the gift in her hand, she excitedly hugged Jiang Yiqiu: “Thank you, Qiuqiu.”
Chu Weiyue was in a great mood and suggested: “To celebrate me successfully entering the semi-finals, how about we go shopping tonight?”
Jiang Yiqiu naturally had no objection.
Going to the garage to get the car, Chu Weiyue very consciously opened the passenger door for Jiang Yiqiu, helped her close it, then got into the driver’s seat to be the chauffeur, driving to a nearby mall.
Arriving at 7:30 PM, the nightlife was just beginning. The mall was brightly lit, playing light music, and customers were everywhere she looked.
Jiang Yiqiu had only been back for two days. Basic necessities had been purchased, but she was still missing quite a few things, so this was a good time to buy everything.
They first bought the daily necessities Jiang Yiqiu needed, then went to browse the fruit and vegetable section. Chu Weiyue pushed the cart, and her face turned green watching Jiang Yiqiu put vegetables into the cart one by one.
Completely different from Chu Weiyue’s deep hatred for vegetables, Jiang Yiqiu was clearly not averse to them.
Seeing that Jiang Yiqiu was about to pick up more and more, Chu Weiyue quickly pressed down on her hand, her smile about to give way: “There’s still some in the fridge. They won’t be fresh if we don’t finish them. Let’s buy more after we’ve eaten these.”
Seeing her pitiful, almost pleading expression, with her tail practically dragging on the floor, Jiang Yiqiu finally gave her a generous pass.
The moment she nodded, Chu Weiyue immediately perked up, pulled her away, and fled the terrifying vegetable section, afraid that if she stayed for one more second, she would have to eat one more mouthful of vegetables.
Then, she headed straight for her favorite snack section.
Once there, without Jiang Yiqiu needing to say anything, she pushed the cart forward and kept grabbing things, as if the person who had been constrained and didn’t want to take anything just moments ago had never existed.
With most of the shopping done, they paid the bill and stored the items in a locker, finally heading to the clothing and accessories section.
These types of goods occupied a large proportion of the mall, with shops on the first, second, and third floors. They started browsing slowly from the first floor.
Huarun is one of the largest shopping malls in Z City, gathering various well-known brands, including some luxury fashion brands.
Although Chu Weiyue’s salary wasn’t low, she had only been working for two years, so she was still reluctant to buy some of the more expensive clothes.
But whether she bought them or not was another matter; there was no harm in looking and trying them on.
They browsed a few shops on the first floor without finding anything they liked. Chu Weiyue thought for a moment and pulled Jiang Yiqiu straight up to the second floor.
Going up the escalator, the logo of a well-known high-end luxury brand was directly opposite the escalator entrance.
Chu Weiyue nudged Jiang Yiqiu: “Want to go in and look?”
“Sure.”
The clothes from this brand were clearly beyond their normal spending level. Jiang Yiqiu didn’t say much. Chu Weiyue assumed she thought the same way: try them on, but don’t pay.
Chu Weiyue gave her a thumbs-up. After more than ten years of being best friends, they were instantly on the same wavelength without needing to say more.
The weather was getting colder by the day. Z City’s geographical location was to the north, with minimum temperatures close to zero. Most of the items in the store were the current season’s winter clothes.
The sales associate saw customers enter and immediately approached with professional courtesy. Upon seeing their faces clearly, her smile deepened, looking more genuine.
Chu Weiyue browsed casually. The sales associate was not overly enthusiastic or talkative, spewing out information. Instead, she stood quietly, only speaking to introduce items when Chu Weiyue showed interest or asked questions directly.
Soon, she spotted a sweater. It had a V-neck design and a textured knit pattern, looking stylish and sophisticated.
The sweater came in two colors: white and blue.
She asked Jiang Yiqiu: “Do you want to try it on?”
The sweet-talking sales associate next to them said: “You two must be very good friends, right? Both of you have great figures and are very suited for the slimming design of this style. It really shows off your shape. You could even wear matching best-friend outfits.”
The sales associate’s words pleased Chu Weiyue, and she pulled Jiang Yiqiu to change clothes.
She came out one step ahead of Jiang Yiqiu and examined herself in the mirror.
She liked it less after putting it on.
Was it her problem?
It seemed so.
However, the sales associate was still praising her: “Miss, you have a sophisticated look and a great figure. It really looks good on you. And this color brightens your complexion. You are already fair, and wearing this sweater makes you look even better. This sweater is practically tailor-made for you. You are truly a perfect match for it.”
Chu Weiyue dismissed all of this as flattery from the sales associate trying to make a sale.
Unreliable.
“It doesn’t look that good on me.”
The sales associate saw the obvious look of dissatisfaction in her eyes and was about to take the sweater back.
The sales associate wanted to say a few more words to try and salvage the sale, but Jiang Yiqiu walked out of the fitting room.
Standing there, Chu Weiyue couldn’t take her eyes off her: “You look so good in that.”
Long legs, narrow waist, and a well-proportioned figure. The fitted clothes accentuated the beautiful curves of her body beneath the fabric.
Others might not know, but Chu Weiyue knew firsthand how good her figure was, after all, she had seen it with her own eyes.
Chu Weiyue unconsciously licked her lip.
Jiang Yiqiu walked up to the fitting mirror, examining herself front and back: “Really?”
“Of course!” Chu Weiyue’s eyes were filled with excitement. “You have a sophisticated look and a great figure. It really looks good on you!”
The sales associate standing nearby: ?
Chu Weiyue: “And this color brightens your complexion. You are already fair, and wearing this sweater makes you look even better.”
The sales associate: ??
Chu Weiyue: “This sweater is practically tailor-made for you. You are truly a perfect match for it!”
The sales associate: ???
These lines sound a bit too familiar!
Chu Weiyue: “This is the one. Buy it!”
Jiang Yiqiu turned her head with a smile: “You look very good in this sweater too. Blue suits you; it’s very fresh. How about we buy both of them?”
Hearing her say this, Chu Weiyue’s eyes immediately brightened, with a hint of shyness. She stood next to Jiang Yiqiu and looked at herself in the mirror: “Does it really look good on me?”
“It looks very good. When have I ever lied to you?”
Chu Weiyue believed her without hesitation, wagging her tail happily, and nuzzled her fluffy head against Jiang Yiqiu’s neck: “Hehe, I thought so too. We both look good in these. We match very well.”
The sales associate: .
Why didn’t you believe me when I complimented you?
