Chapter 20: These Two Wretched Women!
However, the triumphant Chu Weiyue quickly sensed something was off.
It was quiet, too quiet.
It was normal for the man to be stunned by her, but what was wrong with everyone else?
She looked up, and everyone was staring at her in shock, as if she were a rare animal in a zoo.
Chu Weiyue paused for a second, then her face instantly flushed bright red.
God knows why those words slipped out of her mouth so smoothly!
Pu Tao, standing nearby, desperately covered her mouth, trying not to laugh until she burst an internal organ.
Hahahahahaha, Chu Weiyue, that’s what you get for showing off! You just kicked the closet door wide open!
The man hadn’t expected this woman to agree so readily. He was stunned, staring at her blankly. He forgot to be annoyed that she had butted in and instead looked at her with admiration for coming out for love, really wanting to give her a thumbs-up.
The surrounding gazes felt substantial, like they were going to shoot right through her. Chu Weiyue couldn’t take it and grabbed Jiang Yiqiu, running out.
Quick, escape! That was so embarrassing!
She ran all the way to the checkout counter. The stares finally disappeared completely. Chu Weiyue let out a long sigh of relief, the blush on her face still lingering.
Realizing that the person she had “confessed” to was right beside her, Chu Weiyue was mortified and finally managed to open her mouth: “Qiu… Qiuqiu, I’m so sorry, I, I, I…”
She stammered, unable to form a complete sentence. Jiang Yiqiu, however, seemed unconcerned, proactively changing the subject: “It’s fine. Let’s go check out.”
Chu Weiyue was stunned.
Qiuqiu… not only is she not angry, but she looks a little happy?
A… a delusion, right?
Chu Weiyue didn’t have time to dwell on those irrelevant thoughts. She felt a bit embarrassed: “As long as you don’t blame me.”
Then, she hardened her resolve again: “Don’t trust those guys. They’re all liars, buying this and that, totally untrustworthy. Whatever you want, I’ll buy it for you.”
Jiang Yiqiu neither agreed nor disagreed, simply smiling: “Let’s go then.”
Chu Weiyue blinked: “Go where?”
Jiang Yiqiu curved her brows, helping her tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear that had fallen loose from running too fast. She whispered: “Didn’t you say you’d buy me flowers? Does that still count?”
Chu Weiyue instantly regained her composure. All thoughts of the random man were thrown to the back of her mind, and she enthusiastically followed: “It counts, it counts, of course it counts! Let’s go, I’ll buy them for you right now.”
She grabbed Jiang Yiqiu and walked away.
Behind them, Pu Tao, who had just managed to catch up, was left behind again.
Watching the “flower protector” leave with her protected, Pu Tao sped up to chase after them again, looking depressed.
Does anyone remember that they came as three people?
Pu Tao used all her might to catch up with the two, and the trio returned home laden with purchases.
There were too many things they bought this time; one person definitely couldn’t carry them all. They initially planned to split the load equally among the three, but Chu Weiyue, considering Jiang Yiqiu’s slight build, very consciously took on the heavy burden of two people’s worth of shopping.
Jiang Yiqiu only needed to carry the flowers Chu Weiyue bought for her and follow behind.
Walking along, Pu Tao overheard Chu Weiyue mumbling things like, “So light, so light, it feels like I’m carrying nothing. I could carry a few more bags.” Pu Tao was baffled, not knowing what she was talking about.
She’s probably having one of her episodes again.
The three arrived home. With the other two carrying bags and packages, Jiang Yiqiu stepped forward to enter the security code.
When Pu Tao saw her enter the code correctly on the first try without even asking, she completely broke down.
“What’s going on? I came to your house many times over the past two years, and you never told me the code, but you told Qiuqiu as soon as she came back?”
Chu Weiyue tried to explain: “It was always just the two of us together. I just opened the door directly; I didn’t need to tell you.”
Pu Tao wouldn’t listen to her excuses: “Those are all lies. You said you’d always have a place for me in your heart. From what I see, let alone a small corner, you didn’t even leave a single crack for me.”
Chu Weiyue was lectured, and she was a little embarrassed. There were only a few people who regularly visited her. Telling her wouldn’t hurt anything: “Fine, I’ll give you a chance. Guess what my password is?”
Pu Tao didn’t hesitate: “Your birthday.”
Chu Weiyue shook her head, looking disdainful: “Am I an idiot, using my own birthday as a password? Just begging for a thief to guess it.”
Pu Tao chuckled: “Just kidding. How could you use your own birthday? It must be Qiuqiu’s birthday.”
“That’s not much better.”
“It’s not Qiuqiu’s birthday?” Pu Tao frowned. “Then I can’t guess.”
“It’s indeed hard to guess. Most people wouldn’t guess it. I’ll tell you: 223167.”
“What does that mean?” Pu Tao mumbled it twice but couldn’t figure it out. “The first three digits are Qiuqiu’s birthday, what about the rest?”
Chu Weiyue kept shaking her head: “You’re no good. There’s a reason I didn’t tell you the password directly. Look at Qiuqiu. The last time I told her, she immediately understood what it meant and didn’t ask another question.”
Pu Tao gave up: “So, what does it mean?”
“223 is her birthday.” Chu Weiyue glanced at Jiang Yiqiu.
Jiang Yiqiu instinctively took over the explanation: “16 is the 16 years Yueyue and I have known each other.”
“Wouldn’t the password need to be changed every year?” Pu Tao muttered weakly.
“It’s perfect. Changing it regularly prevents thieves from guessing it.”
“…Then what’s 7?”
“7 is Qiuqiu’s lucky number.”
Ha-ha, the first three digits are Jiang Yiqiu’s birthday, the fourth and fifth are the number of years she’s known Jiang Yiqiu, and the last is Jiang Yiqiu’s lucky number. I seriously don’t know if this house belongs to you, Chu Weiyue, or to Jiang Yiqiu!
Pu Tao: “Haha, you’ve completely become Jiang Yiqiu’s shadow. Why don’t you just tattoo her name on yourself?”
She was just being casually sarcastic. Chu Weiyue: “Thank you for providing me with a new idea.”
… I just had to open my big mouth.
It was already past twelve o’clock when they got home. Chu Weiyue headed straight for the kitchen to prepare lunch.
She called out to Pu Tao: “Come and give me a hand. It’ll be faster.”
Jiang Yiqiu followed in: “I’ll join in too.”
Chu Weiyue shook her head and shooed her out: “You don’t need to. Just wait to eat.”
Pu Tao was unconvinced: “Why doesn’t Qiuqiu have to?”
Chu Weiyue stated naturally: “She doesn’t know how to cook. Why would she come in? I’ll do her share along with mine.”
Pu Tao pouted.
Chu Weiyue pulled her in and patiently explained: “Stop complaining. You can’t help much anyway, and I’m the head chef, so I haven’t said anything. Hurry up.”
To get good food, Pu Tao obediently became her sous chef.
Watching her work skillfully and efficiently in the kitchen, completely in her element, Pu Tao praised her: “Your cooking skills are as good as ever. Seriously excellent.”
Chu Weiyue: “I’ve been cooking every day recently, so I’ve gotten back in the groove.”
Pu Tao caught the red flag and raised her voice: “What? Cooking every day? Before, when I wanted to come over for a meal, you said you survived on takeout, and if I came, I’d also be eating takeout with you. Were you secretly cooking gourmet meals at home?”
“Your skills are so good, were you just deliberately not cooking for me?”
Chu Weiyue showed no sign of awkwardness from having her lie exposed. She continued to wash and prepare vegetables with great efficiency, her face looking completely puzzled: “Where did I lie to you? I really did order takeout often before. I rarely cooked.”
“Then you…”
“I’ve been cooking every day recently because Qiuqiu is back. Otherwise, would I bother?” Chu Weiyue explained plainly, looking as if “this is such an obvious question, I can barely be bothered to answer.”
Pu Tao: “I…”
Chu Weiyue added insult to injury: “You’re only getting this meal because of her. Hurry up and say, ‘Thank you, Qiuqiu.'”
Pu Tao was dumbfounded: “…Thank you, Qiuqiu.”
It had to be said that thanks to innate talent and acquired practice, Chu Weiyue’s culinary skills were superb.
She worked alone, but her efficiency was high, churning out dishes one after another. After finishing each one, she would first call out to Jiang Yiqiu: “Come and taste this one. Is the timing right?”
And every dish received high praise from Jiang Yiqiu.
Pu Tao grabbed a pair of chopsticks and crowded over: “It smells so good! I want to try it too.”
Chu Weiyue slapped her hand away with a chopstick: “Get lost, get lost. I’m not done yet. It’s rude to start eating before the food is on the table.”
Pu Tao protested: “Then why can Qiuqiu eat?”
Chu Weiyue said righteously: “She’s helping me taste the food.”
Pu Tao: “I’ll help you taste the food too.”
Chu Weiyue was cold and heartless: “One dish doesn’t need two taste testers.”
“…”
Pu Tao deeply felt her negligible status.
She held it in, held it in, but still couldn’t resist: “Are you really afraid of messing up, or are you afraid Qiuqiu is hungry, making her eat a little something to hold her over?”
Chu Weiyue: “I’m not telling you.”
Pu Tao: Sigh.
Chu Weiyue, you opportunistic little jerk!
After all the hustle and bustle, four dishes and one soup were served.
The braised pork was fatty but not greasy, and the meat was perfectly tender; the sweet and sour ribs were rich in sauce and succulent; the garlic broccoli was crisp and fresh, with a strong garlic aroma; the braised eggplant slices were soaked in sauce, glistening temptingly under the light; and the final seafood soup was savory and mellow, garnished with fresh green scallions.
Pu Tao was practically drooling. Seeing the dishes on the table, she forgave a certain person’s self-serving behavior.
The starving Pu Tao could finally sit down to eat. She didn’t hold back, picking up her chopsticks and starting right away.
She ate like a storm, sweeping everything in sight, gorging herself. With warm food in her stomach, she felt comfortable.
Chu Weiyue: “Didn’t we buy drinks too? They’re by your feet.”
Pu Tao looked down. They were right next to her feet. She pulled out a bottle from the bag and handed it to Jiang Yiqiu. Jiang Yiqiu immediately passed it to Chu Weiyue.
Pu Tao subconsciously said: “Qiuqiu, you drink it. There are more here. I’ll get another one for Yue…”
Before she could finish, she saw Chu Weiyue naturally take the bottle, twist the cap open, and hand it back to Jiang Yiqiu, then reaching out her hand to her: “Give me another bottle.”
Pu Tao: …
She swallowed the rest of her sentence.
I just had to open my big mouth!
Pu Tao’s expression was subtle. Chu Weiyue glanced at her twice: “What’s with that look? Qiuqiu can’t open bottles. I’ve been opening them for her for over ten years. Haven’t you gotten used to it?”
Pu Tao gave Chu Weiyue a bottle with a blank expression, forcing a laugh: “It’s been two years since we last saw each other. I need some time to readjust.”
Then she picked up her chopsticks and continued to eat. Because the food was so delicious, she forgot about the incident and showered Chu Weiyue’s cooking with praise: “Yueyue, your skill is amazing. If you ever get tired of teaching, opening a restaurant wouldn’t be a bad career change. Tsk, tsk, Qiuqiu will only be blessed with good fortune following you around.”
Chu Weiyue was completely unaware that this phrase, which was extremely similar to “You’ll only be blessed with good fortune if you marry me,” had any issue. She accepted the praise smugly: “Thank you for the compliment. There will be more opportunities to sponge off Qiuqiu’s meals in the future.”
Pu Tao was happily eating, showering compliments like they were free. The two briefly reconciled and got along harmoniously for the entire lunch.
Lunch started late, and with all the chatting while eating, it lasted until past three o’clock.
After satisfying their hunger, the table was quickly cleared, and Pu Tao sprawled out on the living room sofa, motionless.
The sisters had finally managed to get together, and Pu Tao was reluctant to leave. She asked the homeowner if she could stay the night.
Chu Weiyue readily agreed: “Sure.”
The house had two bedrooms. Pu Tao knew she would certainly not be sleeping with either of the two women, so she self-consciously assumed she would be sleeping alone in the other room.
She even put on a polite front: “Oh dear, would it be too much trouble if I stay? Qiuqiu will have to pack her things and move to the master bedroom.”
She thought she was being very self-aware, but Chu Weiyue looked completely confused: “It’s no trouble. Why would she need to move? We already share a bedroom.”
Pu Tao’s expression cracked: “The two of you share a room? This is such a big house, with two bedrooms, and you insist on squeezing into one?”
Then she remembered something: “Wait, you’re tricking me. Last time Qiuqiu sent a message in the group, she said you two had separate rooms.”
She revealed a smug smile, having exposed her lie: “Still pretending? Separate rooms are normal. I won’t laugh at you.”
Chu Weiyue explained simply: “That time she was dealing with work, so we temporarily separated. What are you thinking?”
“Then why do you insist on squeezing together, leaving that other room empty?” Pu Tao’s eyebrows were furrowed enough to swat a fly, indicating her lack of understanding.
Chu Weiyue saw her fierce look and subconsciously pulled Jiang Yiqiu closer to her: “Qiuqiu has a cold constitution and is sensitive to cold. She needs me to warm her bed.”
Jiang Yiqiu leaned into her embrace, looking fragile and endearing: “That’s right.”
“…”
Pu Tao looked at the two wretched women hugging each other and colluding to exclude her. She was utterly speechless.
I just had to open my big mouth!
