Chapter 33: How Did You Know We’re Getting Engaged? (Proudly)
Wen Wuxin couldn’t say those words. Every time she thought about Jiang Qingyue losing her chance to live in order to protect her, Wen Wuxin would get a headache as if a thousand-pound hammer was pounding on her brain.
Fortunately, the adults were all still alive. Fortunately, Jiang Qingyue was still alive. She didn’t die to save her.
But Wen Wuxin was still not reconciled, so she questioned Jiang Asheng, even though she knew she had no standing or right to do so.
A crack appeared on Jiang Asheng’s usually calm face. She was a little moved. “It was my fault. I made the wrong decision back then. But the past cannot be changed. I can only live in the present and move towards a correct future.”
“A correct future?” Wen Wuxin sneered. “Since you already know my purpose for getting close to Jiang Qingyue, why do you still want me to get engaged to her?”
Jiang Asheng couldn’t possibly tell her the truth at this moment, so she just said calmly, “I have my own considerations. But don’t worry, no matter what, I won’t harm you.”
Wen Wuxin was silent for a long time before asking, “When can I see Sister Qingyue?”
“As long as you agree now, you can see her tomorrow,” Jiang Asheng said with a faint smile.
Wen Wuxin hadn’t answered yet when a hurried knock came from outside the door.
Jiang Asheng wanted to take back the photos, but Wen Wuxin instinctively pressed down on the photo of Jiang Qingyue.
Jiang Asheng said softly, “Seeing her in person is more meaningful than looking at photos. You will see her, I promise.”
Only then did Wen Wuxin let go.
Jiang Asheng slowly put the photos back in the drawer, then pressed the switch on her desk to open the door.
The person who came in was in a hurry. “Xin Xin!”
Wen Wuxin turned around and saw Jiang Qingyue calling her name with an anxious expression. After seeing her face, Jiang Qingyue’s expression hardened.
It was no wonder Jiang Qingyue was overthinking. Wen Wuxin’s eyes and nose were red, and there were still fresh tear stains on her cheeks. She looked very pitiful.
Pulling the seated Wen Wuxin up and shielding her behind herself, Jiang Qingyue said in a cold voice, “I already told you. My engagement to Xin Xin is just me informing you, not asking for your permission. If you have any complaints, tell me directly. Why do you have to make things difficult for her?!”
“Fine,” Jiang Asheng said flatly. “I’m the villain again.”
Wen Wuxin, who was standing behind Jiang Qingyue, took a small breath. She couldn’t give anything away at this moment.
“No,” Wen Wuxin sniffled. “Qingyue, you misunderstood. I was just so happy.”
Wen Wuxin’s words clearly didn’t allay Jiang Qingyue’s concerns. She asked suspiciously, “Xin Xin, you don’t have to lie and be strong.”
Wen Wuxin hugged her from behind, her voice still very thick. “It’s true. Auntie Jiang was just discussing our engagement. She said she fully supports our engagement and even asked me when we’re going to hold the engagement party. I was so excited, so…”
Wen Wuxin was a little embarrassed at the end.
Jiang Asheng’s tone was a little resentful. “My daughter has grown up. She only listens to her lover and doesn’t care about me, her mom, anymore.”
Jiang Qingyue looked at the two of them again, and after confirming that they didn’t seem to be lying, she finally relaxed.
“Oh, Mom, I was just a little anxious. After all, you were…” Jiang Qingyue’s words trailed off. With Wen Wuxin present, she couldn’t say that Jiang Asheng had previously disagreed with her engagement.
She glanced at Wen Wuxin guiltily and then noticed something else was wrong. She slightly opened her lips, looking like she was about to fall apart.
“Xin Xin, where’s the ring I put on your finger?”
Wen Wuxin quickly took out the ring from her pocket. “I’m sorry, I just…”
She didn’t finish her sentence, but Jiang Qingyue understood.
Jiang Asheng also said slowly at the right time, “Wuxin probably put it away earlier because she thought I was going to break you two up.”
Wen Wuxin’s cheeks and the back of her ears turned red. “No, it’s not…”
Jiang Qingyue ignored their conversation. She carefully put the ring back on Wen Wuxin’s finger and then let out a long sigh of relief.
Jiang Asheng couldn’t help but shake her head at the sight.
And even though Wen Wuxin was looking at Jiang Qingyue, her attention was actually all on Jiang Asheng.
Jiang Asheng had to be satisfied before she could see Jiang Qingyue.
But Jiang Qingyue was completely oblivious. She caressed the ring on Wen Wuxin’s finger and muttered, “Don’t ever take it off again. You scared me so much just now that my heart skipped a beat. I thought you were going to leave me.”
Jiang Asheng, who was sitting in her office chair, looked like she wanted to say something but held back.
And Jiang Qingyue seemed to have realized something. She said helplessly, “I would have known you didn’t agree to the engagement before because you were afraid my mom wouldn’t agree. I would have made her talk to you right away.”
Wen Wuxin smiled gently. “Yes, as long as Auntie Jiang agrees, everything is fine.”
Jiang Asheng understood the hidden meaning in Wen Wuxin’s words and also said softly, “I’m not an unreasonable person. Both of you are very important to me. I also hope that you kids can live well and be happy.”
Jiang Qingyue let out a hiss. “Mom, what you’re saying sounds exactly like the lines older characters say in the finale of a TV show.”
Jiang Asheng smiled without a word, her eyes, which were no longer as clear, fixed on Wen Wuxin.
Wen Wuxin naturally understood what the other woman meant, so she took the initiative to hold Jiang Qingyue’s arm. “I’ll have a good life with Qingyue. As for the engagement party, I don’t know much about it, so I’ll just have to bother…”
“No bother, no bother,” Jiang Qingyue said with a somewhat silly smile. “Just leave it all to me. All you need to do, Xin Xin, is show up with me and let the guests see how radiant my lover is.”
Jiang Asheng hummed. “Since you’re getting engaged, I also have two gifts to give to each of you.”
Jiang Qingyue was interested. “What are you giving us? How about you give me a week off, Mom, so I can go on vacation with Xin Xin?”
Sighing inwardly, Jiang Asheng moved her lips a few times before saying flatly, “You are the heir to the next generation of the Jiang family. You should spend more time on your career.”
Jiang Qingyue shrugged. “Okay, fine. Can I choose my own gift, then?”
Jiang Asheng was very patient. “What do you want?”
“I’m not greedy. I’ll just take 4% of our subsidiary company’s shares for good luck.”
Jiang Asheng paused. Faced with her daughter’s outrageous request, she chose to agree. “You can.”
Jiang Qingyue hadn’t expected Jiang Asheng to agree so readily. She was speechless for a moment, then said awkwardly, “Then I’ll take it. By the way, what are you giving Xin Xin, Mom? It can’t be any worse than mine.”
Jiang Asheng glanced at Wen Wuxin. The two of them’s eyes met, and they were both very calm.
“Wuxin really likes the engagement gift I gave her, Qingyue. You don’t have to worry.”
Jiang Qingyue was curious. “How can you be so sure that Xin Xin will like the gift you gave her, Mom? You might not understand what’s on us young people’s minds.”
“I like it very much,” Wen Wuxin uncharacteristically broke Jiang Qingyue’s cover. “I like the gift Auntie Jiang gave me very much.”
In fact, it wasn’t so much a gift as it was the fulfillment of Wen Wuxin’s obsession of many years.
Being able to see Jiang Qingyue and knowing that everyone from that car accident survived made Wen Wuxin feel like the world had become bright again.
Jiang Qingyue pouted. “What kind of gift is it that you like so much, Xin Xin?”
Wen Wuxin smiled with her eyes crinkling. “It’s a secret.”
Seeing that the two of them were about to start their lovey-dovey talk again, Jiang Asheng shooed them out of the study. “Don’t bother me here anymore. You two can go. Oh, and Wuxin, don’t miss tomorrow’s gift.”
The two of them left Jiang Asheng’s study. Jiang Qingyue, holding Wen Wuxin’s hand, hadn’t even started to whine and ask what kind of gift the other woman had received when a figure suddenly rushed up to them.
Jiang Qingyue slammed on the brakes and saw that it was Butler Li.
Butler Li’s butler uniform was a little messy and wrinkled. She cleared her throat and said solemnly, “Miss Jiang, did you make it back in time?”
Jiang Qingyue nodded. “Thank you, Butler Li. But my mom was indeed discussing some things with Xin Xin.”
Butler Li looked nervous. Had her hard work studying “butler literature” still failed to protect Miss Jiang and Miss Wen’s love?!
Jiang Qingyue raised the hand that was clasped with Wen Wuxin’s. “Oh, Butler Li, how did you know that Xin Xin and I are getting engaged~”
Butler Li: ?
Wen Wuxin was extremely shy. She lowered her head. “Don’t be silly. Um, we’ll be going now, Butler Li.”
Wen Wuxin pulled Jiang Qingyue away. Along the way, Jiang Qingyue, whenever she saw a servant, was like an activated robot, constantly repeating the same sentence.
“What? You also know that Xin Xin and I are getting engaged?!”
Seeing that Jiang Qingyue was truly happy, Wen Wuxin let her be silly and took her back to their bedroom.
Bang.
Jiang Qingyue closed the door, and the two of them laughed as they fell onto the soft bed.
Looking at the other woman’s smile, Wen Wuxin suddenly felt a pang of guilt.
Perhaps it was because she was going to see Jiang Qingyue that she was a little more merciful towards Jiang Qingyue.
“Qingyue,” Wen Wuxin said, carefully choosing her words. “We’re… just getting engaged for now. Other things are still a long way off.”
Wen Wuxin spoke vaguely, but Jiang Qingyue understood her words instantly.
But Jiang Qingyue wasn’t angry. In fact, she nodded in agreement. “You’re right. After all, I’m not ready yet either.”
Wen Wuxin sneered inwardly. It seemed that Jiang Qingyue’s previous image as a wild and flirty person wasn’t all an act. It was also her true nature.
Wen Wuxin had been prepared for Jiang Qingyue to say something ridiculous like she would still look for other lovers, but she didn’t expect the other woman to say:
“I’ve given you too little, Xin Xin. The houses, bags, and clothes I’ve given you aren’t enough.”
“Hmm?”
Wen Wuxin hummed in shock, not knowing how to respond.
Jiang Qingyue went on without her. “I don’t know what to do to make you believe that I love you just as much as you love me. But everyone says that where the money is, the love is.”
Wen Wuxin covered her mouth to stifle a laugh. “Qingyue, you’ve already spent a lot of money on me.”
Jiang Qingyue shook her index finger. “It’s not enough, not enough. Since it’s an engagement, I also have a gift to give you, Xin Xin. I just so happened to get some shares of the subsidiary company from my mom, so I’ll give you that 4%.”
The one who was shocked now was Wen Wuxin. She refused incoherently. “No, you can’t. That’s too valuable, and…”
