Chapter 37: I Have a Secret I Don’t Want My Sister to Know
Not daring to ask why Jiang Qingyue changed her surname to Jiang Qingyue, Butler Li rubbed her hands and chuckled. “That’s good. You and Miss Jiang are getting engaged, and Miss Jiang’s sister is also back.”
Wen Wuxin’s hands didn’t stop moving as she asked as if it were a casual question, “Butler Li, who do you think is more suitable to be the future heir of the Jiang family?”
I knew I shouldn’t have gotten so close to this gossip. Why am I being asked a death-defying question now?
Butler Li couldn’t express her hardship. She could only speak vaguely and politely. “They are both excellent. I think both of them are quite suitable.”
Wen Wuxin turned to look at Butler Li. “If they were to compete, who would you and the others in the main residence support?”
Why is a rich family power struggle suddenly happening?!
Butler Li wouldn’t dare to answer such a dangerous question. She raised both of her hands. “Miss Wen, how could we servants dare to point fingers?”
Seeing that Wen Wuxin seemed unsatisfied with this answer, Butler Li added, “For President Jiang, both of them are her daughters, so it must be difficult to choose. However, President Jiang has been in the business world for so many years, so she will definitely be able to make a choice that is good for everyone.”
“‘Hand and back of the hand are both flesh’?”
Wen Wuxin repeated the phrase in a questioning tone and then said to herself, “Maybe.”
Seeing this, Butler Li quickly stood up. “Miss Wen, I have something to do, so I’ll go take care of work first. Please keep busy.”
Wen Wuxin hummed in response, and then heard the sound of the door closing.
Since Jiang Qingyue was back this time, Jiang Asheng must have some kind of plan.
Although she still didn’t know the other party’s true intentions, Wen Wuxin absolutely could not accept Jiang Asheng using Jiang Qingyue as a shield for Jiang Qingyue.
She could still see through Jiang Qingyue’s thoughts, but Jiang Asheng’s thoughts were truly difficult for her to figure out.
Just as she was thinking about what to do next, a knock on the door sounded again.
Wen Wuxin felt helpless. Hadn’t Butler Li asked what she wanted to ask yet?
Adjusting her expression, Wen Wuxin smiled and opened the door. “Butler… Sister Qingyue?”
Jiang Qingyue stood at the door and said softly, “Xin Xin, can I see your paintings?”
She had only recently found out that Wen Wuxin was now a famous painter.
Wen Wuxin was just about to step aside to let her in when she seemed to remember something. She immediately blocked the doorway. “My… Sister, the art studio is a little messy. Can you wait for me to tidy up?”
The art studio contained countless paintings she had done of Jiang Qingyue. For some reason, Wen Wuxin didn’t want Jiang Qingyue to know.
Jiang Qingyue smiled. “How about I help you clean up? I used to…”
“No need,” Wen Wuxin quickly refused. She wanted to close the door. “Sister, please wait for me. I’ll be done soon.”
Jiang Qingyue’s left hand, with its ugly scar, held the door open just as it was about to close. She still had a gentle smile on her face. “Xin Xin has grown up and has secrets she doesn’t want her sister to know?”
“Does it hurt?”
Wen Wuxin didn’t answer Jiang Qingyue’s question. Instead, she asked in a trembling voice.
She reached out with a trembling hand to touch the back of the other woman’s hand. The uneven scar on it made her heart ache.
Wen Wuxin knew how the scar came to be, but she didn’t want to relive the memory.
Even though she didn’t want to remember, the bad memories still came flooding back like a torrent, threatening to swallow her whole.
Wen Wuxin lowered her head and gasped for air. She no longer had the strength to block Jiang Qingyue.
With her other hand, Jiang Qingyue pulled Wen Wuxin into her embrace with one arm. She entered the art studio, closed the door behind her, and looked around the studio, but what she said sounded very pitiful.
“Xin Xin, it hurts a lot.”
She knew that Wen Wuxin was easily soft-hearted, so she hoped that Wen Wuxin would pity her and not be disgusted by the ugly scar.
Wen Wuxin didn’t know how to comfort her. She could only wrap her hands around the other woman’s hands. “I’m sorry.”
Buzz—
Wen Wuxin’s ears started ringing again.
The sharp sound made her unable to make sense of her surroundings. The only thing she was certain of was that she was holding Jiang Qingyue’s hand.
As expected, Jiang Qingyue saw the portraits of herself. The corners of her lips curled up slightly. She was about to ask Wen Wuxin, knowingly, if these were paintings of her, but the person in her arms suddenly went limp and started to fall.
Jiang Qingyue quickly wrapped her arms around the other woman’s waist and used her other hand to support her shoulder. “Xin Xin?!”
Wen Wuxin’s eyes were still open, but her light brown eyes had lost their sparkle.
“I’m the one who should have died.”
Jiang Qingyue’s brows furrowed. She pretended to be calm. “Don’t talk nonsense.”
Wen Wuxin struggled to focus on Jiang Qingyue’s face. She saw the other woman’s full lips moving, but she couldn’t hear her voice.
Wen Wuxin stared at Jiang Qingyue with wet eyes. “Sister, I can’t hear what you’re saying.”
Sniffling, Wen Wuxin murmured to herself, “Sister, don’t die.”
Jiang Qingyue was filled with regret. She held the other woman, opened the door with her other hand, and then picked up Wen Wuxin in a bridal carry and ran downstairs.
The two of them moved very quickly, but Wen Wuxin felt very safe in Jiang Qingyue’s arms.
Wen Wuxin’s consciousness was fading, but she was still repeating five words as if in a trance.
Sister, don’t die.
Twenty minutes later.
“I’m really fine now,” Wen Wuxin repeated again while sitting on the living room sofa.
Jiang Qingyue didn’t even listen. She looked at the family doctor next to her, gesturing for him to speak with her eyes.
Although he really wanted to ask why this person looked exactly like Miss Jiang, the family doctor still explained concisely, adhering to his professional ethics. “Miss Wen’s tinnitus is caused by emotional distress. As long as she doesn’t get so emotionally volatile in the future, she’ll be fine.”
Jiang Qingyue wanted to slap herself twice. “Xin Xin, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that just now.”
Wen Wuxin shook her head. She touched Jiang Qingyue’s face, who was kneeling on the floor. Her skin was soft and delicate. “It’s nothing. I’m the one who should be saying sorry.”
Jiang Qingyue didn’t want their conversation to be filled with only apologies, so she forced a smile. “Xin Xin, we’re having dinner with the Jiang family mother and daughter tonight. You should go rest. I’ll go make fried mushrooms. Isn’t that your favorite, Xin Xin?”
Butler Li mumbled to herself, “Jiang family mother and daughter? Aren’t you also a daughter of the Jiang family?”
But everyone was tactful enough not to interrupt.
Wen Wuxin’s face was not as pale as before. She grabbed Jiang Qingyue’s wrist. “I’ll go with you.”
Jiang Qingyue smiled wryly. “You don’t need to help me cook, Xin Xin. Your hands are too precious. They’re only meant for painting.”
Wen Wuxin pouted. “I want to be with you, Sister.”
The memories and the tinnitus from before had greatly impacted her mental defenses. Now, Wen Wuxin didn’t want to think about so much. She just wanted to do something very ordinary but also very precious with Jiang Qingyue.
The two of them went to the large kitchen. The chefs consciously made space for them. Jiang Qingyue scanned the area and quickly found the ingredients on the counter.
“First, we’ll prep the mushrooms, then we’ll prepare the batter. And I’ll make some other dishes as well.”
Jiang Qingyue started working while she was talking, but she stopped Wen Wuxin every time she tried to help.
…
Wen Wuxin watched Jiang Qingyue chop up shrimp paste. They spent the entire afternoon in the kitchen.
In addition to the fried mushrooms, Jiang Qingyue also prepared many other dishes. Wen Wuxin told her that she didn’t need to prepare so much, but Jiang Qingyue just smiled and said nothing.
“These will be made into yam and shrimp cakes. They’re especially delicious, Xin Xin, you…”
Jiang Qingyue was smiling and chatting with Wen Wuxin when she saw someone standing at the kitchen door and stopped talking.
Wen Wuxin rubbed her arms. Although the weather forecast said it wouldn’t be cold today, she felt as if the temperature had dropped by several degrees.
“Xin Xin.”
A female voice sounded. Wen Wuxin turned around and saw Jiang Qingyue holding a cake box.
She seemed to not have seen the person behind Wen Wuxin. Jiang Qingyue lightly shook the cake box in her hand. “The dessert shop you love so much started making their seasonal strawberry shortcake again today. Want to try some?”
