Chapter 49: Maybe it’s Better to Just Blow it Up
Jiang Asheng didn’t pay much attention. “Are you having second thoughts? I already told you, this is just an engagement. After this year, you’ll be free to choose…”
“No, that’s not it,” Wen Wuxin interrupted. “President Jiang, I’ve been lying to Qingyue for a long time. I lied so much that I ended up deceiving myself. I thought I only had disgust and hatred for her, but…”
Wen Wuxin’s expression was complicated, and she forced a smile.
“Maybe my feelings for Qingyue aren’t as genuine as hers for me, but…”
Jiang Asheng didn’t hide her surprise, but Wen Wuxin’s expression didn’t seem like she was lying.
Wen Wuxin continued, “Before the engagement, let’s have a meal together. You, Qingyue, Sister Qingyue, my family, and me.”
“I also want to introduce my family to Qingyue.”
Jiang Asheng rejected it without thinking. “No.”
Realizing her refusal was too blunt, Jiang Asheng softened her tone. “Now is not the best time to bring your parents back.”
Is it because my mom isn’t well yet, so she can’t come back?
Wen Wuxin held back from asking and just looked disappointed.
Jiang Asheng comforted her, “In a year, our two families will definitely have a meal together. Your mom and dad are doing well now. I’ll also tell them about your engagement.”
Wen Wuxin didn’t ask any more questions. “Okay, then I’ll leave it all up to you, President Jiang.”
Once the seed of doubt is planted, it will quickly take root and sprout.
Wen Wuxin wasn’t able to leave the Jiang family’s main residence tonight.
After leaving Jiang Asheng’s study, she went to the art studio and packed a few boxes of paint to take home.
But before she could leave the studio, someone pushed the door open.
It was a furious Jiang Qingyue.
Wen Wuxin didn’t look at her, keeping her eyes down. “What’s wrong, sister?”
Jiang Qingyue also wanted to control her emotions, but she really couldn’t.
“You told Jiang Asheng that you and your family wanted to have a meal with the Jiang family?!”
Just a moment ago, Jiang Qingyue had told Wen Wuxin that their two families would have a meal together in the future.
Jiang Qingyue, her adoptive parents, and Wen Wuxin’s family.
How did it suddenly become Wen Wuxin’s family and the Jiang family?
Although this was just an excuse to see her parents, Wen Wuxin still felt guilty. “I’m sorry. I just thought it would be better for both sets of parents to meet formally before the engagement.”
Jiang Qingyue’s voice was icy. “I told you, I won’t let you get engaged to Jiang Qingyue.”
Wen Wuxin tried to walk past Jiang Qingyue, but the other person closed the door. “Xin Xin, don’t be childish.”
For some reason, that word triggered Wen Wuxin. She said with a trembling voice, “I’ve always been immature and loved to cause trouble, sister. Don’t you know that best?”
Jiang Qingyue was speechless. After a while, she said, “That’s not what I meant…”
Wen Wuxin’s voice was soft. “Is it so hard to just have a meal with our parents like before?”
Jiang Qingyue understood what she meant. “Are you missing Auntie and Uncle?”
Wen Wuxin’s nose tingled. “You’re all bullying me. Can’t I just miss my mom and dad?”
Jiang Qingyue affectionately touched Wen Wuxin’s cheek.
Wen Wuxin finally looked up, and a tear fell onto Jiang Qingyue’s fingertips with her movement.
At a glance, Wen Wuxin only showed sadness.
But hidden beneath the sadness was a subtle hint of probing.
Wen Wuxin felt only sorrow. She didn’t understand why she was now starting to probe Jiang Qingyue.
She was the sister she trusted the most.
Jiang Qingyue’s response was unrelated to the question. “Our two families will have a good meal together in the future. And I won’t let anyone bully you.”
But she said nothing about letting Wen Wuxin see her family now.
Wen Wuxin’s tears turned into a smile. “Okay.”
But the smile didn’t reach her eyes.
The two of them chatted for a while. Jiang Qingyue was about to take Wen Wuxin home when she was stopped.
After a few days away, Jiang Qingyue had been working non-stop. Now that she was home, the fatigue on her face was undeniable.
But when she saw Wen Wuxin, her expression instantly changed to a radiant smile. “Xin Xin!”
Ignoring Jiang Qingyue, who was standing next to Wen Wuxin, Jiang Qingyue hugged Wen Wuxin tightly and rubbed her head against Wen Wuxin’s shoulder and neck like a puppy.
“I missed you so much,” she said in a clingy, sweet tone.
Wen Wuxin patted the other person’s back, but her eyes were on Jiang Qingyue.
Jiang Qingyue was, of course, unhappy with Jiang Qingyue’s actions, but she didn’t want to make Wen Wuxin uncomfortable right now.
After giving Wen Wuxin a long look, Jiang Qingyue turned and left.
After not seeing each other for a few days, Jiang Qingyue used every ounce of her energy to be affectionate with Wen Wuxin.
“Xin Xin, just move back here, okay?”
Wen Wuxin couldn’t resist Jiang Qingyue’s persistent requests. “Okay. I’ll go back home to get some things tomorrow.”
Jiang Qingyue’s eyes lit up. “Then stay here tonight!”
The two of them walked back to the bedroom hand in hand, like a couple in love.
Without waiting for Jiang Qingyue to ask, Wen Wuxin took the initiative to explain why she had come to the Jiang family’s home today.
“…That’s what happened. But President Jiang probably has other things to consider, so she didn’t agree. I understand.”
Wen Wuxin was retreating to advance, a move that always worked on Jiang Qingyue.
But this time, Jiang Qingyue just hummed. “My mom thinks about more things than we do. There must be a reason for her to do that. But don’t worry, Xin Xin, when we have that meal together, I promise I’ll behave and make sure your family likes me!”
Wen Wuxin pushed the other person away. “You’re all talk. I’m going to take a shower.”
She turned her back to Jiang Qingyue, and her smile quickly disappeared.
Sure enough, she shouldn’t have had any expectations of Jiang Qingyue.
Jiang Qingyue laughed as she chased after the other person. “Let’s go together.”
The bathroom was filled with steam. Wen Wuxin reached out to test the water temperature in the bathtub. “It’s a little hot.”
Jiang Qingyue adjusted the water temperature while saying seriously, “If the water isn’t hot, how can it warm your heart?”
Wen Wuxin laughed. “My mom and dad don’t like young people who are all talk.”
Their playful banter seemed no different from usual, except Wen Wuxin was always intentionally or unintentionally steering the conversation toward her family.
Jiang Qingyue’s face fell. “Xin Xin, are you trying to say that your family likes Jiang Qingyue better? I know, I can’t compete with her. I’m not as good as her at anything. I…”
Wen Wuxin had a headache. “What are you talking about?”
They were talking about meeting the parents. How did it get back to Jiang Qingyue?
Jiang Qingyue sobbed as she took off her clothes and stepped into the bathtub with her back to Wen Wuxin.
Wen Wuxin sighed in her heart, preparing to cheer her up, but then she suddenly heard the other person’s apology.
“Xin Xin, I’m so sorry about what happened the other day.”
Wen Wuxin was stunned. “It’s okay.”
Jiang Qingyue was still facing away from her. “What happened in the past… we were both at fault. But let’s leave the past behind. Let’s—”
Jiang Qingyue’s voice was almost inaudible. “Let’s have a proper, fresh start, okay?”
A single sentence contained a surprising amount of information.
Wen Wuxin didn’t expect Jiang Qingyue to be so direct. She was choked up for a few seconds before hugging the other person from behind.
Jiang Qingyue thought Wen Wuxin’s action meant she had forgiven her. She grabbed Wen Wuxin’s wet arm and kissed it. “Xin Xin!”
Wen Wuxin said helplessly, “I still have soap suds on me.”
Jiang Qingyue cupped her hands and scooped up some water, ready to pour it on Wen Wuxin’s arm, but the other person just lowered her hand into the water.
“Qingyue,” Wen Wuxin’s voice was soft. “I still want both of our parents to have a meal with us before the engagement. After all… this is a very important decision for me. I hope my mom and dad can be a part of it.”
Jiang Qingyue paused. “Xin Xin, I understand, but now is not the best time for you to see Auntie and Uncle.”
Wen Wuxin sneered in her heart but feigned confusion. “Why? I don’t understand. Sister Qingyue is back in the Jiang family now, so why can’t I see my mom and dad?”
Jiang Qingyue didn’t want Wen Wuxin to know about the Jiang family’s dirty past and could only say dryly, “Just wait a little longer. It’ll be soon. But I promise you, your family is doing very well now.”
“Really?”
Perhaps it was because they were twins, but Jiang Qingyue’s expression was just as unnatural as Jiang Qingyue’s had been.
“Of course it’s real.”
Wen Wuxin’s heart sank.
…
The next day, at Wen Wuxin’s house.
Early in the morning, the Jiang family all rushed to the company after breakfast. Jiang Asheng had authorized Jiang Qingyue to manage one of the Jiang family’s new subsidiaries, so all three of them were very busy.
In addition, Wen Wuxin had said she was going home to get some things, so no one suspected anything was wrong.
Right now, looking at the man sitting on the sofa opposite her, Wen Wuxin’s voice was extremely cold.
“How are my mom and dad really doing?!”
Tang Yanzhen didn’t expect Wen Wuxin to contact him, and he certainly didn’t expect her to bring up her parents again.
Although he didn’t know what the Jiang family had told her, it seemed things were going even more smoothly than he had imagined.
So Tang Yanzhen was ambiguous. “Your mom is sick. I already told you that, Miss Wen.”
Wen Wuxin stared intently into Tang Yanzhen’s eyes. “What kind of illness? How long has she been sick? Is she receiving treatment?”
Tang Yanzhen leaned back slowly. “Miss Wen, being so aggressive isn’t a good habit.”
Wen Wuxin took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. I’m just too worried about my family.”
Tang Yanzhen smoothed out his cuffs. “I understand how you feel, Miss Wen. I also told you that as long as you help me do what I want to do, I’ll let you see your family. Time is running out.”
Seeing that Wen Wuxin wasn’t saying anything, Tang Yanzhen took a metal box out of his bag. As he moved it, the inside of the box made a crisp clinking sound.
Tang Yanzhen opened the box, revealing that it was filled with thin, coin-sized and coin-thick wafers.
“These are micro-explosives that can be controlled by remote. Miss Wen, you can put them in your picture frames and hang them in various rooms in the Jiang family’s main residence.”
Wen Wuxin frowned. “Explosives? Mr. Tang, you said arson before.”
Tang Yanzhen, who had changed his mind, smiled. “Maybe it’s better to just blow it up instead of setting a fire.”
