Chapter 6: The Next Moment, She’s Off to Coax a New Lover
Jiang Qingyue’s throat tightened, and her voice became hoarse. “Why don’t you want it?”
The answer was known to both of them.
But Wen Wuxin answered with a question. She shook the yellow seashell in her hand. “Will you wear this bracelet afterward?”
Jiang Qingyue nodded. “Yes, I’ll wear it forever.”
The sea breeze tousled Wen Wuxin’s hair, but her light brown eyes became more crystalline and bright under the sunlight.
“You…”
Jiang Qingyue hesitated.
Wen Wuxin watched the other woman patiently, as she was always patient with Jiang Qingyue.
“Do you want to marry me?”
With that thought in mind, Jiang Qingyue actually asked the question.
As soon as the words left her mouth, she felt a pang of regret. She was probably going to scare the other woman away.
The flash of surprise in Wen Wuxin’s eyes seemed genuine, but she quickly composed herself and shook her head.
“President Jiang, I’m not a greedy person.”
President Jiang felt like her world was about to collapse. “Don’t call me that. It’s too formal.”
Yet, all of Jiang Qingyue’s other lovers had to respectfully call her President Jiang.
Wen Wuxin lowered her head, still clutching the seashell. Her knuckles were white from how hard she was gripping it.
“From the very beginning, I was clear about my identity. I’m already content with your pity for me and for letting me move into the Jiang family’s main house. I wouldn’t dare to dream of anything else. Please don’t make these kinds of jokes anymore, President Jiang. I’m afraid I might…”
I’m afraid I won’t be able to stop myself from taking them seriously.
Wen Wuxin’s tone was calm, but she didn’t dare to look at Jiang Qingyue for even a second.
A hand grabbed her slender wrist. Wen Wuxin’s body stiffened but she didn’t try to pull away.
“I know it all. I’m just one of your many…”
Wen Wuxin paused. The word “lovers” was difficult to say at this moment. She said softly, “…lovers. Getting married requires not just mutual love, but also matching status and family background. And it’s clear that I’m a terrible match.”
“First it’s ‘President Jiang’ and then it’s ‘you.’ Wen Wuxin, are you planning on treating me like a stranger next?”
Jiang Qingyue’s voice was cold, and Wen Wuxin shrank back.
The grip on her wrist tightened. Wen Wuxin whispered, “I’m sorry, I just don’t want to…”
“Don’t want to what?”
Wen Wuxin just gave up. “I don’t want to be a laughingstock.”
Jiang Qingyue frowned. “A laughingstock? Who would dare to say that about you? Did someone say that about you?”
Jiang Qingyue quickly began listing possible suspects in her mind, but Wen Wuxin shook her head.
“No one said anything, but I know. Moving into the Jiang family’s house already made many people laugh at me. But even so, for my own selfish reasons, I wanted to get closer to you, so I agreed. Wasn’t that too much of me?”
Jiang Qingyue sighed. “Xin Xin, how could you think that?”
She placed the other woman’s hand on her soft chest and said gently, “Xin Xin, I really do like you.”
Wen Wuxin finally looked up, her eyes wet with tears.
“You like me just like you like them!”
This was the first time Wen Wuxin had spoken to Jiang Qingyue so fiercely.
Her voice was already a little choked up, but the tears were still swirling in her eyes, not falling.
“I’m not asking you to love me the same way I love you, but please don’t repeatedly create the illusion that you love me. President Jiang, I’m not greedy. As long as I can be by your side in any capacity, that’s enough.”
Wen Wuxin’s words were incredibly humble. If her teacher, Zheng Lu, were there, she would have probably fainted from anger.
“I’m sorry,” Jiang Qingyue said, now the one apologizing. “I was too presumptuous. Before… what happened just now was my fault. I scared you.”
Jiang Qingyue secretly made a decision in her heart.
Wen Wuxin’s eyes were red. She carefully hugged Jiang Qingyue, her slightly nasal voice pleading, “Qingyue, don’t leave me.”
Wen Wuxin wasn’t hugging her very tightly, but Jiang Qingyue intensified the embrace.
“I will never leave you.”
Resting her chin on the other woman’s shoulder, Wen Wuxin’s eyes lost focus. The vast blue ocean in front of them gradually blurred.
Never? How could Jiang Qingyue have the audacity to say that?
Jiang Qingyue was just acting, and yet, at this moment, she seemed more sincere than Wen Wuxin herself.
Wen Wuxin sneered inwardly, but on the surface, she maintained her sad, insecure demeanor.
It wasn’t until the sea breeze made Wen Wuxin sneeze that Jiang Qingyue ended the hug.
“It’s getting a little chilly. Let’s go back,” Jiang Qingyue said softly.
After they returned and sat on the sofa, Wen Wuxin asked, “Qingyue, how many days are we staying here this time?”
Jiang Qingyue smiled coyly. “Why aren’t you calling me President Jiang anymore?”
Wen Wuxin took out the yellow seashell. “After we get back, I’ll go to the shop and make a bracelet for you myself. Will that make you happy?”
Jiang Qingyue lightly tapped Wen Wuxin’s forehead. “I’m not mad.”
She was just a little scared.
Wen Wuxin nuzzled against the other woman’s neck and shoulder. “I’m glad you’re not mad, Qingyue. What do you want to eat tonight? I’ll check what ingredients are in the fridge and cook.”
Jiang Qingyue gently stroked the other woman’s smooth, delicate arm. “We have a chef who can cook for us. Your hands are so precious, how can you cook?”
Wen Wuxin had already stood up and opened the fridge. Although they were on an island, the fridge was full of all kinds of ingredients, both seafood and mainland produce.
“Should we have steak? Or some Chinese home-style dishes?” Wen Wuxin asked herself while looking at the fridge full of ingredients.
“I’ll love whatever you cook, Xin Xin, but don’t go to too much trouble. What if you get tired and don’t have the energy for our main business tonight?”
Jiang Qingyue’s voice was full of laughter. Although Wen Wuxin didn’t say anything, she could see that the other woman’s ears had turned completely red.
Her phone rang at an inopportune moment. Jiang Qingyue answered the call. “Hello?”
Wen Wuxin was too far away to hear what was being said on the other end. She turned around and could only see a look of conflict on Jiang Qingyue’s face.
Wen Wuxin understood. She said thoughtfully, “Is something wrong with the company? If you’re busy, we can just go back.”
“No, nothing’s wrong with the company,” Jiang Qingyue denied without thinking. Then she quickly added, “But it’s not about them either, I… Anyway, I have to go for a bit. I’ll be back tomorrow morning. Xin Xin, wait for me.”
Wen Wuxin didn’t show any anger. “Okay.”
After Jiang Qingyue left, Wen Wuxin’s smile faded.
One moment, she was talking about “forever,” and the next, she was off to coax a new lover.
Jiang Qingyue’s words held no weight in Wen Wuxin’s heart.
Wen Wuxin didn’t doubt that there might have been a tiny bit of sincerity in Jiang Qingyue’s question about getting married.
But how cheap Jiang Qingyue’s sincerity was.
But Wen Wuxin didn’t care. As long as it brought her closer to the truth, she was willing to do anything.
Wen Wuxin saw Jiang Qingyue’s behavior as an impulsive act, so she naturally wouldn’t agree. She had to make Jiang Qingyue more deeply aware of how much she “loved” her before they could talk about anything else.
The next morning.
The edge of the bed suddenly dipped. Wen Wuxin groggily opened her eyes and saw someone sitting on the bed.
As her vision cleared, she saw a smiling Jiang Qingyue.
Wen Wuxin yawned and sat up. “Are you done with your business? Mm…”
Jiang Qingyue didn’t answer. She reached out, pinched Wen Wuxin’s chin, and kissed her forcefully, leaving no room for refusal.
It was an extremely passionate kiss. Wen Wuxin was about to run out of breath, but the other woman didn’t stop. She even reached up and ran her fingers through Wen Wuxin’s hair, intensifying the kiss.
When the kiss ended, Wen Wuxin’s face was flushed. “You… you came back so quickly?”
Jiang Qingyue’s voice was full of affection. “My baby was waiting for me. Of course I rushed back.”
Wen Wuxin suddenly leaned closer until their noses were touching.
Jiang Qingyue was about to ask what she was doing when she felt a wetness on her lips.
Wen Wuxin tilted her head and lightly licked her lips, then quickly pulled away.
“I wanted to see if Qingyue secretly ate candy, which is why she’s so good at saying sweet things.”
Jiang Qingyue froze, then let out a heavy cough. “Do you want to taste it again?”
Wen Wuxin almost couldn’t hold her innocent expression, but she managed to shake her head. “No, thanks.”
Jiang Qingyue stood up. “Go get ready. I’ll take you out to have some fun later.”
Wen Wuxin didn’t ask why Jiang Qingyue had suddenly left yesterday, and after she returned this morning, neither of them brought up the subject.
The day’s itinerary on the island was packed, but Wen Wuxin could feel the other woman’s absent-mindedness.
“Qingyue,” Wen Wuxin called out to Jiang Qingyue, who had once again drifted off. “Your float is moving.”
The two were fishing on a platform they had set up. Jiang Qingyue snapped out of her daze and began reeling in her line.
But the fish that had taken the bait got away.
Looking at the empty hook, Jiang Qingyue laughed and shook her head. “The fish in this sea are too clever. They can eat the bait and still get away.”
Wen Wuxin had no time to respond because her own float was moving. She quickly stood up and reeled in her line, using some strength to pull the fish up.
It was a Pacific amberjack, about fifty or sixty centimeters long. Wen Wuxin herself was surprised that she had caught such a large fish.
She put the fish in her basket, and Jiang Qingyue looked on with envy. “Xin Xin, you’re amazing. Have you ever fished before?”
Wen Wuxin shook her head. She had never fished before. Was this beginner’s luck?
Jiang Qingyue smacked her lips. “I’ll have the chef make this fish into a baked fish tomorrow.”
Wen Wuxin tilted her head. “Aren’t we eating it today?”
Jiang Qingyue just blinked and didn’t answer.
After a day of fun on the island, the sun began to set, and the two returned to the villa before nightfall.
Jiang Qingyue glanced at the clock on the wall. The hands pointed to seven.
“Come on, let’s go upstairs for dinner.”
The second-floor balcony had been decorated at some point, and the long dining table was covered with rose petals.
Wen Wuxin hadn’t expected it. Jiang Qingyue had been so distracted during the day because she was looking forward to a candlelight dinner.
