Boss, Please Go Easy On Me (GL) - Chapter 11
Yan Xiaomi went to the hospital and had her temperature taken: 38.5∘C (101.3∘F).
“Doctor, will there be any problems with my brain from the fever?” Yan Xiaomi asked with some concern, looking at the doctor who was preparing to write her medical record. As a child, a neighbor’s kid developed intellectual disabilities from a high fever, with unsteady walking and slurred speech. Yan Xiaomi had never had such a high fever before, and this sudden spike made her a little worried.
“You’re not a child,” the doctor looked at her amusedly. “You’ll be fine. You’ll recover after the IV drip.”
The doctor handed her the completed medical record form. “Go pay the fee, then get the infusion. Don’t worry.”
“Infusion?” Yan Xiaomi was a little upset. Unless her cold was extremely severe, she was determined never to get a shot. The thought of that needle piercing her hand made her feel uneasy.
“I’ll go pay. You wait for me here.” An Yao took the form and paid the fee. She returned to see Yan Xiaomi dozing off on a chair in the hallway. She walked over and gently tapped Yan Xiaomi’s face. “Let’s go for the infusion.”
“Ah? Infusion?” Yan Xiaomi stood up dejectedly, feeling truly miserable.
“It’s such a hot day, and you still managed to catch a cold. Who’s fault is that?” An Yao was speechless. How could such a grown person have such a high fever and not even know it? Was she just plain stupid?
“I was afraid of having nightmares yesterday, so I turned the air conditioning down a bit low and slept under a quilt. I didn’t realize when the quilt fell onto the floor…”
An Yao: “…”
An Yao suddenly received a call from the sales department. She told Yan Xiaomi, asking her to rest well, and then returned to the company.
Yan Xiaomi followed the nurse to the treatment room, and watching the nurse’s clumsy operations made her even more nervous.
Is this girl a student intern?
The nurse examined her left hand, looking closely for a long time, and asked with some confusion, “Where are your veins?”
“My veins are very thin. You have to look carefully to find them.”
She had an experience with being poked during a bl00d test before. Her veins were too thin to find, and a student nurse poked her several times before finally locating one, leaving her hand swollen and painfully sore for two days afterward.
Looking at the young woman in front of her, Yan Xiaomi strongly felt that the tragedy of that year might be about to repeat itself.
The nurse tied a rubber band around her arm, patted it, and rubbed it. Finally, she saw a vein pop up and exclaimed excitedly, “Hey, found it!”
For some reason, Yan Xiaomi felt that the nurse’s eyes were shining, and her smile was eerie, like a forensic doctor in a movie who enjoys dissecting corpses suddenly getting excited upon seeing a body. Of course, Yan Xiaomi wasn’t a corpse, and she didn’t want to become one at the hands of this nurse.
Seeing the nurse preparing to insert the needle into her arm, Yan Xiaomi suddenly pulled her hand away. “Wait, wait a minute.”
Yan Xiaomi was very nervous. The nurse looked excited. She pulled Yan Xiaomi’s hand back and comforted her, “Don’t be afraid, don’t be nervous. Teacher said that everyone has to go through it once or twice in life. You’ll get used to it.”
“No, just let me catch my breath.” Yan Xiaomi, feeling lightheaded, wanted to pull her hand back. The nurse held on tightly and said cheerfully, “You can’t relax now. If you do, the vein will disappear. Don’t worry, one poke won’t kill you.”
One poke certainly won’t kill me, but why the hell did you poke me four times, and after poking around in my flesh for ages, you still haven’t gotten it in!
On the nurse’s fifth attempt to get into her vein, Yan Xiaomi, holding onto her last breath, frowned and weakly asked, “Can you even stick a needle in?”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” The nurse started to panic after several unsuccessful attempts. She looked very nervous, and a slight sweat had beaded on her forehead.
“I, I’m a new intern. I don’t have experience. I, I’m sorry…” The nurse’s voice became less and less confident.
Seeing her like this, Yan Xiaomi lost her temper. Her head was spinning terribly. She sighed softly, “I’m the one being poked, why are you so nervous?”
“I’m afraid you’ll get angry?” The nurse’s tone was so gentle that Yan Xiaomi’s ears softened upon hearing it. “I’m not angry, it just hurts.”
Yan Xiaomi frowned, looking at the needle, and then at her own arm, which had several small holes that were oozing a bit of bl00d. It wasn’t excruciating, but when one is feeling unwell, any stimulus feels magnified. Her attention was focused entirely on the pain, and she couldn’t even worry about her dizziness.
“Don’t look at me like that,” Yan Xiaomi’s heart softened at the nurse’s worried and vulnerable gaze. “It doesn’t hurt anymore. Just do it, be careful.”
The little nurse relaxed slightly when she saw that Yan Xiaomi wasn’t angry. She smiled. “I’m sorry. I, I will be careful this time.”
The two stared closely at her arm again. The little nurse finally succeeded. Yan Xiaomi sighed in relief. If the nurse had failed one more time, her patience would have run out. She might not have died from the high fever, but from being angered to death by the little nurse.
She found it slightly hilarious that she was relieved after being poked with a needle. Looking at the girl setting up her IV drip, she suddenly felt amused. Her own intelligence was often offline, and now seeing someone else’s intelligence drop made her feel a strange sense of comedic relief.
“Hey, are you alright?” The little nurse looked tense when she saw Yan Xiaomi laughing, thinking she had caused some kind of problem.
“You’re calling me ‘hey’?” Yan Xiaomi looked at her amusedly. The nurse looked quite young. “How old are you?”
“I’m 23.” The nurse laid her hand flat and made her lean on the bed. “You look younger than me.”
“Do I look that young?” Yan Xiaomi smiled. “What a coincidence, I’m one year older than you, haha.”
“Really? You look fair and tender, like a college student who hasn’t entered society yet, um…” The nurse thought for a moment and said with a smile, “You feel pure and lovely.”
“Are you sure you don’t mean silly, white, and sweet?” Yan Xiaomi also laughed.
“Girl, you are so funny.” The nurse laughed again. “You’re the first person I’ve met who didn’t get angry after being poked five times. You’re so nice.”
Yan Xiaomi was speechless. “If you poked me one more time, I wouldn’t just be angry, I’d be vomiting bl00d and dying.”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” The little nurse smiled. She noticed Yan Xiaomi was alone in the room and would probably be bored. “Why don’t you play on your phone for a while? This infusion won’t be over quickly.”
“Okay, you go get busy.”
After the nurse left, Yan Xiaomi was alone. It was indeed boring without anyone to talk to. She took out her phone and saw a text message. Tapping to open it, she immediately felt nervous when she saw it was from An Yao. She unconsciously sat up straight. Is President An sending a text to tell her not to come to work anymore?
Yan Xiaomi suddenly hesitated to open the message. This strange feeling made her heart flutter. After a moment, she took a deep breath, but couldn’t resist tapping the message open.
— Wait for me at the hospital after the infusion is done. I’ll pick you up.
