- Chapter 16 - What’s Wrong with the Watch
Xiao Mohan’s heart lurched. Fingers tightened around her backpack straps. She wanted to say no—but when she met his fathomless gaze, the words lodged in her throat.
Han Yezhen didn’t call a driver; he took the wheel himself. She hesitated, and didn’t dare treat him like hired help, so she sat in the back.
In the front passenger seat, with the center console between them, she felt a little safer.
When it was time to get out, Han Yezhen cast her a long, meaningful look and said mildly, “Call me if anything comes up.”
“Okay,” Xiao Mohan answered.
Whatever he said, she would agree first.
His long fingers still rested on the steering wheel, tapping idly, his eyes fixed somewhere far away. He didn’t unlock the door to let her out.
Who knew what he was thinking.
Xiao Mohan grew tense, afraid he’d suddenly drop another bomb—like last time, when he’d asked out of nowhere if that girl that night had been her.
She wet her lips, voice small. “Xiao-jiujiu?”
He pondered for a beat, took in her flustered face, and in the end said nothing. His finger moved, and the car door clicked.
Xiao Mohan let out a small, shaky breath and got out.
From a distance, Zhao Fei happened to see her stepping out of the luxury car.
Xiao Mohan stayed in the classroom all day. After yesterday’s beating, she was scared.
Even when she went to the bathroom between classes, she chose the busiest times.
Even so, she was on edge, as if she might be cornered at any moment.
She still had a low fever, drowsy and foggy. Whatever the teacher said drifted in one ear and out the other, her head buzzing.
Just before the last class of the morning, she left the bathroom and ran straight into Zhao Fei’s group.
Zhao Fei shot her a cool glance. Xiao Mohan kept her head down and stepped aside to let her pass.
Only when Zhao Fei went in did she exhale—then she spotted Lu Yan in the corridor.
He nodded to her, gentle. “Come to the office for a moment.”
There were other teachers inside. The two of them kept a proper distance.
Lu Yan took her watch out of a drawer. “It’s solar. It shouldn’t run out of battery. A component was loose—my friend fixed it. Try it.”
“Thank you, teacher.” Xiao Mohan took the watch and strapped it on.
Maybe when Zhao Fei hit me yesterday, I blocked with my hand and she struck the watch.
Lu Yan looked at her, something flickering in his eyes. He hesitated, then said slowly, “Xiao Mohan, there’s something I think you have the right to know.”
“What is it?”
His gaze dropped to her wrist. “You said your Xiao-jiujiu gave you this watch?”
“Yes.”
“There’s a location transmitter in it.”
Her black-and-white eyes blinked. She didn’t get it at first. “Isn’t GPS normal for a smart watch?”
“It is,” Lu Yan explained. “But did you know beforehand that this watch could be used for tracking?”
“No.” She shook her head.
He hoped he was overthinking it. His voice grew heavier. “Do you have the companion app for this watch installed on your phone?”
She shook her head again, then asked, “Teacher, what are you trying to say?”
“I’m just guessing here. Maybe your Xiao-jiujiu has the app. He’s worried about you and wants to know where you are.”
Xiao Mohan’s breath stalled for several seconds.
She understood.
