- Chapter 34 - He’s Not a Man Who Plays by the Rules
Li Mohan kept her head bowed, picking at her food delicately, careful not to chew too loudly.
Han Yezhen waited patiently, his long fingers tapping idly on the table, each soft tap echoing like a pulse that quickened her heart.
She was already full, but after finishing her meal, she deliberately ladled a bowl of soup, sipping it slowly, one tiny spoonful at a time.
She knew it was childish, futile even, but dragging out the meal felt like delaying the inevitable danger.
When she finally finished, Han Yezhen said calmly, “Go sit on the couch.”
He stood, gathering the dishes and chopsticks, carrying them to the kitchen sink.
In her mind, Han Yezhen was the last person she’d associate with household chores.
Yet he cleaned up with swift precision.
Li Mohan obeyed, settling onto the couch, her eyes fixed on her slippers. Her back curved slightly, fingers gripping the armrests tightly, nerves fraying.
She’d only been here a few days, and already he’d brazenly kissed her, touched her.
Her greatest fear was that he’d bring up that drunken night.
She wasn’t ready—could never be ready—for what might happen if that truth came to light.
To her, the best way to handle it was to pretend it never happened.
To keep their lives separate, with no further entanglements.
Soon, Han Yezhen’s footsteps approached from the kitchen, drawing closer.
She felt the weight of his presence, her breath catching.
He sat beside her, not too close but not far either, his cool, piercing gaze settling on her.
Her heart constricted.
After a pause, she gathered her courage, her voice soft and tremulous. “Uncle, what did you want to talk about?”
Han Yezhen didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he lit a cigarette, taking a slow drag.
Seeing him smoke, Li Mohan fell silent.
Sunlight slanted through the window behind him, casting his face in shadow. His chiseled features grew sharper, his thick lashes casting dark pools, his eyes dimming with an unreadable depth.
No matter how many times she saw it, his face was breathtaking.
Li Mohan didn’t know that as Han Yezhen sat there, silently smoking, he was fighting the urge to pin her to the couch, kiss her senseless, and fvck her raw.
When the cigarette burned halfway, he flicked his gaze toward her, his voice steady, devoid of inflection. “About you being bullied at school. Anything else you want to say?”
Li Mohan froze, caught off guard. She hadn’t expected that question.
His dark, smoldering eyes had unnerved her, a look she’d seen twice before.
Once, when he’d first forced himself on her.
And again, in the elevator, when he’d kissed her.
She knew what that look meant, and it terrified her, leaving a deep shadow in her heart.
When she saw it just now, her entire body had tensed, bracing for him to lunge at her right there on the couch.
But now, hearing his question, she didn’t know whether to feel relieved or more anxious.
She couldn’t tell what he was really after.
Despite her soft, obedient demeanor, she was a practiced liar—sometimes so convincing she fooled herself.
She remembered what she’d told him before and stuck to it.
Avoiding his gaze, she lowered her lashes and murmured, “Nothing more. Just what I said last time.”
Han Yezhen exhaled a puff of smoke, his tone calm and deliberate. “Sure?”
“Sure.”
“I see.”
Li Mohan hesitated, choosing her words carefully. “Uncle, what are you going to do about it?”
He stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray. “You’ll find out soon enough.”
He wasn’t a man who played by the rules, and she hoped his methods wouldn’t terrify her.
