- Chapter 15 - The Gift
Bei Yin walked to the railing, joining everyone in the banquet hall as they turned their gaze toward the entrance.
As expected, she wasn’t wearing the black military dress uniform of District 1, but rather the dark red vintage hues of District 6.
The impeccably pressed jacket bore several decorative sashes, forming irregular U-shaped arcs that swayed slightly with her movements.
Her legs, clad in slightly loose trousers, were slender, straight, and long, ending in knee-high black military boots.
Bathed in a slanting glow of warm light, she strode in with urgent yet measured steps, the interplay of light and shadow making her breathtakingly beautiful.
The moment she appeared, an invisible aura of dominance spread through the banquet hall.
The Alphas felt a faint prickle on their scalps.
Their naturally combative instincts made them reluctant to submit to such overwhelming presence, their pheromones stirring restlessly, eager to be released.
Yet they quickly regained their senses, acutely aware that this top-tier Alpha—wherever she came from—was not someone they could afford to provoke.
They could only avert their eyes and turn to their Omega dance partners.
But the sight that greeted them nearly made them choke.
The Omegas had their hands clasped over their mouths, their fiery gazes practically glued to that Alpha.
The Alphas were furious, but there was nothing they could do.
Just as Alphas instinctively sought out high-quality Omegas, Omegas were naturally drawn to the strongest.
Fortunately, the powerful Alpha’s gaze didn’t linger on the Omegas for more than a couple of seconds—just a quick sweep, as if searching for someone.
Finally, she looked up, her eyes settling on the dazzling blue rose on the second floor.
Bai Yi was dumbfounded. “This Alpha of yours… she’s really something.”
“Of course,” Bei Yin replied with a smile, waving down at her.
The Alpha below froze for a moment before her face lit up with a soft, obedient smile.
She weaved through the chaotic crowd, taking the stairs two at a time to reach the second floor.
Taking Bei Yin’s hand, she looked her up and down before spinning her around twice.
“Big sister, you’re so beautiful—even more than the moon!”
Bei Yin blinked playfully. “Half the credit goes to Ruanruan’s taste. Your eye for style plus my looks? Unbeatable.”
The moment her hand twitched with the intention to move, a head obediently lowered, nuzzling into her palm.
“Our Ruanruan outshines even me today—so cool and stunning, it makes my heart skip a beat.”
As soon as the words left her lips, she saw the Alpha’s expression shift into that of a well-fed young leopard, licking her sharp little fangs in satisfaction.
“…” Bai Yi turned away, covering his eyes with one hand.
What was he supposed to do?
The scene before him looked more and more like a lion wagging its tail, offering its paw to its tamer, and obediently presenting its chin for scratches.
Once Bei Yin withdrew her hand, Ruan Fei straightened up, lifting Bei Yin’s fingers to her lips for a kiss.
“I’m sorry, big sister. I forgot about family matters and had to send a stand-in to pick you up—”
Her dark eyes swept over the Alphas who were still staring up at them. “Not being able to escort you in is my failure. It won’t happen again.”
An invisible, razor-sharp pressure descended, carrying an unmistakable warning—their gazes had crossed a line.
The Alphas’ scalps tingled, and they hurriedly averted their eyes.
Only the female tycoon Bai Yi had mentioned remained, standing there with a wine glass in hand, still gazing tenderly at Bei Yin.
Bei Yin glanced up and saw the barely restrained fury simmering in those dark eyes.
First, she took Ruan Fei’s slightly chilled index finger, giving it a reassuring squeeze and a gentle shake.
Then, she grasped the entire hand—now taut with bulging veins—and interlaced their fingers tightly.
“Come with me for a moment. There’s something I want to give you.”
In an instant, it soothed the Alpha’s raging anger, and she obediently let Bei Yin lead her to the restroom.
Bei Yin sat on a vintage floral chair.
Ruanruan carefully adjusted Bei Yin’s blue dress adorned with a galaxy pattern before sitting beside her.
She nuzzled her head affectionately against Bei Yin’s, lowering her gaze as she watched her open a small velvet box.
Hearing Bei Yin ask, “Do you like it?”
Thinking it was a birthday gift for Bai Yi, she replied sourly, “No, it’s ugly.”
Bei Yin raised an eyebrow. “You think your gift is ugly?”
Ruanruan froze, momentarily confused by the statement, and pointed at herself in bewilderment. “F-for me?”
“But you said it’s not pretty. I’m a little disappointed,” Bei Yin teased.
Ruanruan blinked in shock for a few seconds before her entire face lit up with joy.
But halfway through, her expression suddenly wilted again.
She turned her head away and mumbled softly, “It’s not something Bai Yi didn’t want, so you’re giving it to me, right?”
“Pfft—I already had Bai Yi’s gift delivered to him at noon. These earrings were specially bought for you. I spent a long time picking them out yesterday.”
The wilted smile instantly bloomed fully across the Alpha’s face.
The corners of her eyes lifted in delight, and her chest vibrated with continuous laughter.
Her dark eyes, usually so intense, now brimmed with overflowing excitement.
She took the earrings with both hands, holding them up to the light to examine them, her eyes crinkling so much that her pupils nearly disappeared.
“So pretty! I love them so much, thank you, sister!!”
Bei Yin smiled too.
Suddenly, she realized the true charm of gift-giving—it was moments like this, watching the recipient light up like a child, that made it worthwhile.
The joy, happiness, and fulfillment she felt were no less than what the receiver experienced.
At the same time, she finally understood the sentiment behind the words: Don’t make Ruanruan unhappy. Just accept it and say thank you, okay?
“Sister, help me put them on!”
Once Bei Yin fastened the earrings, Ruanruan dashed to the bathroom, admiring herself left and right, exclaiming “So pretty!” three times before hurrying back.
She knelt on one knee beside Bei Yin’s legs, wrapping her arms around her slender waist and resting her chin on her thigh. “Thank you, sister.”
Bei Yin chuckled. “Oh my, let me see whose little tail is wagging so hard it might fly off.”
“I’m so happy. Sister gave me a gift, which means she really likes me too.”
When it came to her need for reassurance, Bei Yin never hesitated to respond.
“I love your impossibly beautiful face, every side of you, the way you act spoiled with me, and also—”
She cupped Ruanruan’s face with both hands, leaning in to press a kiss on her smooth forehead, leaving behind a tiny blue rose that carried a faint, sweet fragrance.
“—kissing your forehead.”
The faint, sweet pheromones drifted through the air, seeping into the Alpha’s body and rising to her heated gland.
Like an ancient poison, even the slightest trace was lethally addictive.
Yet she didn’t need any external trigger—just the scent alone was enough to stir a near-maddening craving.
She lowered her gaze, avoiding Bei Yin’s eyes.
Blinking several times, she found she couldn’t dispel the overwhelming desire, so she buried her face in the tulle skirt instead.
Bei Yin pretended not to notice the fleeting look of possessiveness that had flashed across her face earlier, teasing, “Why are you getting shy over one little kiss?”
“I’m not shy… Ruanruan is just tired…”
“Yeah, yeah, sure. I believe you.”
“It’s true!”
“Then lift your head and let me see.”
“No!”
Bei Yin thought to herself: Well, the attempt to coax the little leopard into showing another side of itself has failed. Dr. Bei Yin will have to keep trying.
