- Chapter 24 - An Independent Surveillance Space
Bei Yin turned Ruanruan’s face toward her, gazing deeply into those dark eyes at close range.
“You know I like you very much, so there’s no need to be so cautious about small things. I won’t get angry—I permit it.”
Ruan Fei understood the implication behind her words, and a shadow gradually darkened her obsidian eyes.
“But my restraint toward you isn’t that strong. If I take the initiative, it won’t just be a simple kiss.”
“Oh? Like what?”
The other woman, however, couldn’t elaborate further. Instead, she lightly pecked her lips.
So quick that there wasn’t even time to catch a whiff of pheromones before the contact ended.
Then, she scampered back to her original spot and resumed tinkering with the robot.
Bei Yin smiled helplessly before turning to drain the freshly boiled noodles in cold water.
After tossing the noodles with sauce and placing them on the small table, she called Ruanruan over to eat while she headed to the bathroom to remove her makeup and wash up.
But the Alpha didn’t sit properly at the table. Instead, she leaned against the doorway with her bowl, like an overly clingy big dog that couldn’t bear to be apart from its owner for even a moment.
Between bites, she swallowed and spoke—
“The hardware didn’t show any issues. I suspect the problem lies in the software.”
“To be specific, I’ll need to assemble it and run some tests.”
Bei Yin wiped her face with a towel. “No rush. Rest well tonight—you can test it tomorrow.”
“I’m not tired. I’ll finish it soon.”
Seizing the chance for some positive reinforcement, Bei Yin teased, “So beautiful and so skilled. I’ll have to ask Master Ruan for guidance when I have the time.”
“Not at all. Military academies all teach mechanical courses.”
Unlike centuries ago, schools on Blue Star no longer offered a broad curriculum covering general knowledge and extracurricular activities.
Each institution specialized in a single field—medical schools, military medical colleges, military academies, business schools, and so on.
Children entered these schools at just a few years old and completed all coursework by the time they turned eighteen.
“Sis, you’re the impressive one. Unlike me, who only knows how to fight, and—” Ruanruan swallowed a mouthful of noodles, lifting her eyes slightly, “only wants to eat… the food you make.”
She said with complete sincerity, “Compared to an angel like you who saves lives, I’m just a useless cockroach.”
The words struck Bei Yin with alarm.
Though she had never attended a military academy, she knew all too well how much harsher the life of a soldier—who relied on physical endurance—was compared to a military doctor, who relied on intellect.
From the time they were barely knee-high, they had to crawl through battlefields on war-torn planets.
No childhood, no personal life, no toys.
For over a decade, all they had were energy weapons of varying sizes and models, along with relentless, grueling training.
And for Ruanruan to become an acting commander right after graduation—the bl00d, sweat, and pain she must have endured to reach that point were beyond Bei Yin’s imagination.
“You’ve protected Blue Star well. Without you and hundreds of thousands of soldiers fighting on the front lines, how could doctors like me safely tend to the wounded in the rear?”
Bei Yin stood on her tiptoes and ruffled the little leopard’s hair. “So how could you possibly be useless?”
Still, there was one thing she couldn’t quite understand.
Rumors said the Ruan family had been on excellent terms with the former commander of District 1—nothing like the hostility between Shen Yasi and Bai Yi.
Given the influence and status of Ruan’s father as an executive, there had been no need to send his eldest daughter into the hardships of military life.
Which meant Ruanruan had chosen this path willingly.
So… what was the reason she had pushed herself so hard?
The little leopard commander set her bowl aside and pulled her Omega into an embrace.
“Big sister’s words suddenly made me feel so capable. I’ll work even harder to protect Blue Star in the future, so you can do whatever makes you happy without any worries.”
Affection surged like water, instantly flooding Bei Yin’s heart.
At the same time, she couldn’t help but smile and guide the conversation: “Then can you tell me about your district? When we win the battle someday, I’ll come celebrate with you.”
Ruanruan immediately released her, picked up the bowl, turned away, and started slurping noodles with complete immersion.
Bei Yin poked her straight back: “Hey, hey, hey…”
She sighed helplessly. When it came to topics that touched on her fears, no matter how long they’d been together, that nervousness always lingered at the back of Ruanruan’s mind.
So she didn’t press further. “Go sit down and eat properly.”
Wanting Bei Yin to rest early, Ruan Fei quickly finished her noodles and washed the bowl.
Then she took out several portable capsule containers, pressed the restore button, and professional equipment instantly covered the floor.
Bei Yin also sat cross-legged on the floor, watching as Ruan Fei effortlessly pieced together the scattered metal fragments into a complete Xiao Ai.
After connecting it to another device and running a two-minute test, Ruan Fei announced the results.
“Just as I suspected—besides the brain chip, there’s an independent surveillance space installed. District 6’s machinery could never detect this.”
Bei Yin: “What do you mean?”
Ruan Fei swiped left on the holographic screen displaying scrolling code, which suddenly transformed into fragmented images that filled half the living room space.
They were all snippets of Bei Yin’s daily life—eating in casual home clothes, doing laundry with Xiao Ai.
Dense and numerous, these images kept playing before Bei Yin’s stunned round eyes.
Ruan Fei’s gaze gradually turned icy: “The space collects fragments of your life, uploads them daily to the robot’s creator, then immediately deletes itself.”
Day after day, for hundreds of days.
Jiang An truly deserved to die.
Bei Yin nodded, remaining relatively calm. She felt fortunate she didn’t have the habit of wandering around in her underwear.
And Xiao Ai never entered her bedroom while she slept—a small mercy that only trivial, meaningless moments had been observed.
She took Ruan Fei’s hand and shook it reassuringly, changing the subject: “Our Ruanruan is so capable—I’m sure you can eliminate this virtual space.”
“Of course.” Ruanruan dismissed the distressing images with a wave of her hand. “All of Jiang An’s family’s gadgets are worthless trash.”
Even just getting an entry pass to District 1 was extremely difficult, let alone residency—unlike District 2 where you only needed a referral.
Bei Yin, who had never been to District 1, had seen technology in District 2 years ago that only became popular in District 6 this year.
This showed how vast the resource gap was between districts.
While District 2 was already a paradise that people from other districts dreamed of, hearing Ruan Fei scoff like this made Bei Yin curious—
Just how far ahead had the technology in that golden city progressed?
