- Chapter 26 - You Understand Me Better Than My Mother
Bei Yin followed Ruan Fei away from the crime scene.
Once they reached a spot where the ruins were no longer visible, she raised Ruan Fei’s wrist.
The bloodstains on it had all been wiped away, but traces of crimson still lingered in the hard-to-clean crevices of her nails.
She said bluntly, “Did you persuade them the same way you did with Fu Cong?”
The Alpha lowered her head, tugging at the brim of her cap, and gave a small nod.
Bei Yin released her hand and stood before her, her gaze tender but her expression solemn.
“Since I was five, I’ve learned one thing—reasoning alone doesn’t work with certain people or aliens. Sometimes, violence is necessary to stop violence.”
“If Omegas weren’t inherently physically weaker, I would have become just like you. In other words, I approve of all your methods.”
“And I believe you wouldn’t hurt someone without reason. I also believe that if you encountered a severely injured little girl, you’d put the mission aside to save her.”
The Alpha kept her hand pressed against her cap, hiding her expression, but her voice was quiet as she asked, “Are you… scared of me?”
“No. Never.” Bei Yin covered Ruan Fei’s hand with her own. “I’ll always stay by your side. One day, you’ll believe that I’ll never leave you.”
Still, they needed to find the root cause of her pathological emotions—otherwise, it would always feel like scratching an itch through a boot, never truly relieving it.
Aside from believing her own personality was flawed, Bei Yin was certain there were other underlying reasons.
The Alpha gave another small nod. “Mm…”
“Alright, enough about Fu Jian’s mess. Come with me to work first.”
Ruan Fei understood Bei Yin just as well.
During the days she wasn’t around, Bei Yin had carried the burden alone, supporting even her mother.
So fiercely independent, so unyielding.
She would never completely rely on an Alpha, never make herself a mere appendage—not even for Ruan Fei.
—Though Ruan Fei desperately wanted to claim Bei Yin as her own, and it would have been easy to do so.
But that would be like crushing the pride of someone inherently strong, breaking them until they were battered and bruised, then locking them in a cage under the guise of “for their own good.”
She wouldn’t be happy. She’d only grow to resent it.
So Ruan Fei restrained her darker impulses.
At the same time, she had her own sense of boundaries.
Some things didn’t require Bei Yin’s permission—she could step in and let her lean on her, just a little.
Other things, even if asked, Bei Yin wouldn’t allow interference. Acting on her own would only upset her.
Ruan Fei understood this better than anyone.
Take the Fu Jian incident, for example. Beating up those worthless thugs was enough—in her mind, the matter ended there.
On the way to the office, Bei Yin suddenly spoke with a smile. “Ruan Fei.”
She usually called her “Ruanruan” or “little leopard,” occasionally “sweetheart.” This was the first time she had used her full name.
Even when trapped by aliens, backed into a corner as the great Commander Ruan, she hadn’t felt as panicked as she did now.
“Wh-what’s wrong?”
“Do you know what I love most about you?”
“Mm… that I’m pretty? That I’m clingy and adorably soft?”
“Neither.” Bei Yin smiled at her. “You understand me—better than my own mother does. I love that so much.”
Commander Ruan’s face instantly brightened. She lifted Bei Yin’s hand and kissed it, as if it had become an indispensable daily ritual.
“You scared me. I thought something was wrong.”
“Pfft—what were you afraid of?”
“When your girlfriend calls you by your full name, anyone would be scared.”
Bei Yin didn’t correct the probationary officer’s term of endearment. “Then call me ‘good darling’ to wash away your fears.”
“Hehe~”
News of the destroyed shop spread too quickly. Before Bei Yin even entered her office, she saw Lin Jiaojiao storming out in a rage.
“Wait for me, Yinyin! I’m going to ask my girlfriend for the energy cannon right now! I’ll blast that bastard Fu Jian to smithereens!!”
The other team members didn’t look much better.
They all knew how excited Bei Yin had been about the shop’s construction—finally being able to meet daily with her ailing mother. She’d personally overseen every detail of the shop’s design and decoration whenever she found time.
Two weeks of hard work had been reduced to nothing overnight because of Fu Jian’s claim about illegal construction. They all felt their bl00d boil with indignation for her.
Bei Yin remained composed, though she did regret revealing the surprise to her mother prematurely. She should have waited until everything was ready.
She stopped Lin Jiaojiao. “Calm down. The major inspection starts today, and we have a meeting soon. Let’s focus on our duties first.”
Perhaps from patting heads too often, she’d developed a habit of wanting to comfort angry people by ruffling their hair. But just as she raised her hand halfway, it was intercepted by another hand that placed it on her own head with a smug “Hmph!”
Only then did Lin Jiaojiao and the team notice the Alpha from Chief Bei Yin’s household, giving enthusiastic thumbs-up.
“Well done! He deserved it!”
Bei Yin responded with a smile, took Ruan Fei’s hand, and led the Eighth Team to the military hospital’s largest conference hall.
It wasn’t time yet, so only a few dozen young trainees learning resurrection techniques were present. They immediately stood up to greet “Sister Bei.”
These trainees didn’t belong to any of the eight teams. When Bei Yin mentioned wanting to pass on her skills to Shen Yasi, the latter promptly gathered hundreds of new and experienced doctors. Bei Yin selected forty to fifty from them.
Until the techniques were fully taught and mastered, Shen Yasi wouldn’t easily let her go.
Bei Yin stepped onto the podium and waved with a smile. “Sit down. You’ll be joining teams eventually, so consider today a preview of working with your future colleagues.”
The group nodded obediently. “Yes! We’ll follow Sister Bei’s lead!” Then they eagerly studied the Alpha beside her.
Just as the rumors said—tall and breathtakingly beautiful. But this soft, adorable demeanor bore no resemblance to the vicious fighter the Eighth Team described, who had single-handedly beaten dozens until they spat bl00d.
Soon, the chiefs from the other seven districts arrived with their teams. Without exception, they first greeted Bei Yin, then cursed that despicable bastard, and finally praised the Alpha enthusiastically for her excellent beatdown.
The Alpha, as if marking territory, clung to her Omega the entire time, cheerfully acknowledging each compliment.
From a nearly empty room to packed to the brim, she still held on under two hundred pairs of eyes.
One chief joked from below, “Sister Bei, where’d you find such a clingy Alpha? Doesn’t she ever let go?”
The room erupted in laughter.
Bei Yin coughed lightly and whispered, “Do you want to go down?”
“No, I want to stick with Sister…”
So Bei Yin fetched a small stool and tucked the Alpha under the table. Even while sitting on the tiny seat and playfully flailing against her legs, the partition blocked her from view below.
Bei Yin raised a hand, and the laughter gradually subsided. Speaking into the microphone, she said, “A few things—I’ll keep it brief.”
“First, in the past, each medical team handled their own cases. It was exhausting, inefficient, and placed all the pressure on teams that completed early inspections.”
“This year I’ve made some adjustments. The entire medical team will conduct full physicals for one fleet, while the other fleets without full physicals can continue with their missions.”
“The detailed plan has been sent to everyone’s wristbands. It’s brief, so you can review it now.”
While everyone was looking at the plan, she smiled and said, “This year won’t be too exhausting for everyone. Tomorrow we’ll have some free labor coming to help.”
No one asked why, but they all cheered enthusiastically with thunderous applause.
“Secondly, I’ve requested some personnel from General Zhao to serve as supervisors. Over the next two weeks, anyone who is uncooperative, causes trouble, or engages in sexual harassment will be dealt with according to military regulations.”
Coincidentally, among the hundred or so people, some were those who had just stood up for Bei Yin.
On the way to the office, Bei Yin thanked them.
She received two responses in return: “No need to be polite among family,” and “Dr. Bei, your Alpha sure has quite the personality.”
The meeting hall erupted in applause again: “Thank you, Sister Bei!!”
Especially the Beta and Omega women who often faced harassment during physicals—they clapped until their hands turned red.
“One more small thing—my junior trainees will need Brother Feng and Sister Liu to mentor them.”
The two chief physicians in their forties and fifties immediately laughed and quickly assigned the trainees.
“Come, come, boys follow me, girls go with Sister Liu.”
Finally, there were details about dividing the Alpha, Beta, and Omega genders into smaller teams for examinations.
Bei Yin explained everything methodically and concluded with a few final words.
“Alphas will be examined by me, Jiaojiao, Xiao Li, and Brother Fei. All chiefs, please stay behind. The rest of you can prepare for the 10 a.m. physicals. Thank you all for your hard work.”
