- Chapter 39 - Leaving the Palace (Part 1)
Under Yi Han’s careful care, Murong Ziying slowly got through the painful days, and her wounds healed quickly. Now, she could even get out of bed and walk a little. But Yi Han still worried about her. He made sure she drank all kinds of rare and precious herbal tonics. These days, most of the palace’s healing treasures ended up in her belly.
“Ling’er, bring me my shoes. I want to take a walk,” she said.
Ling’er had been sent from the Murong household by Yi Han. He knew Ziying was alone in the Eastern Palace, so he asked for her old servant to keep her company.
“Miss—oh, I should say Lady Ziying—you can’t! The Crown Prince said you’re not allowed to get out of bed,” Ling’er said, trying to stop her.
“I just want to sit outside in the pavilion for a while. It won’t hurt,” Ziying said, getting up and putting on her shoes. If she stayed inside one more minute, she’d go crazy.
“Lady Ziying, you’re being so naughty. What if the Crown Prince comes back and sees you?” Ling’er worried.
Ziying laughed like silver bells. “Nothing will happen. You’re overreacting.”
“I’m not overreacting. It’s the Crown Prince—he’s way too nervous about you, my lady,” Ling’er stuck out her tongue. She had never seen a man treat a woman this well before—so well it was hard to believe. And that man was the future emperor! Ziying’s life was truly enviable… if only…
Ziying gave a small smile. She knew how sincere Yi Han was, but… “Come on. I want to smell the flowers.”
Ling’er had no choice but to help her out of the room. “Do your feet still hurt?” she asked, worried.
“They feel a little numb, that’s all. I’m mostly better now. The Crown Prince is just making too big a deal out of it,” she said, a bit annoyed. His worry had made her suffer more in some ways.
“How can you say that? If he didn’t ‘make a big deal,’ you wouldn’t have healed so fast!” Ling’er said, defending the Crown Prince.
“You’ve only been here a short while and your heart’s already on his side. Don’t forget—I’m your master,” Ziying pouted.
“I would never forget! I’m just speaking the truth,” Ling’er said cheekily.
“You little thing!” Ziying shook her head, smiling.
Ling’er helped her sit in the pavilion. They looked at the lotus flowers in the pond. It was the perfect season—the pond was full of blooming lotuses, calming and peaceful. A soft breeze blew through, and Ziying felt completely relaxed. This was what fresh air felt like—something she could never enjoy lying in bed. Suddenly, she missed her modern life. Her heart ached at the thought.
“This breeze feels nice, but be careful not to catch a cold,” a familiar voice said.
Yi Han appeared quietly, frowning as he gently placed a cloak over her shoulders.
She was surprised to see him. “Your Highness, why are you here so early today?Although he was Crown Prince now, the old emperor had slowly started handing over power, so Yi Han was very busy”. Still, he visited her every day, spending time with her before going back to work. But today, it wasn’t even noon, and he was already here—that surprised her.
“I had a feeling you’d sneak out of bed, so I came early to check. As expected.”
He didn’t look pleased as he adjusted the folds of her cloak.
“I’ve been lying in bed for so many days. I’m already healed. Staying in bed any longer is torture,” she said, a little annoyed.
He gently touched her beautiful face. She looked much better now—her skin was glowing. He couldn’t help but kiss her cheek.
“I know it’s been hard. Once the royal doctor says you’re fully healed, I promise to take you outside the palace for a walk,” he said with a smile, trying to make up for her boredom and pain.
Her face lit up. “Really?” she asked excitedly.
He tapped her nose. “When have I ever lied to you?”
