Confession to You in Early Summer (GL) - Chapter 15
Zhou Xiaoxiao didn’t manage to find out the origin of the note from Yan Wei, nor did she see its contents. After a bit of a fuss, she calmed down, and no more mysterious items were delivered, so the matter was dropped.
At the end of April, the school held a three-day spring sports meet before the midterm exams. The sports meet was immediately followed by exams, making the students feel a mix of joy and sorrow. They couldn’t even enjoy playing to the fullest, showing the sinister intentions of the school leaders.
However, the curse that it would rain whenever there was a sports meet didn’t work this year. From the first day of the sports meet, the sun was shining brightly, and it continued for three whole days, making even the most active students lose their energy.
Sign-up sheets had to be submitted a week in advance. Wen Tan announced the sports meet arrangements during the long break between classes. The students made a brief commotion, but when he asked everyone to actively sign up, there were few respondents.
The students in the class either stared blankly into space or busied themselves with their own affairs, mostly indifferent to signing up. The sports committee member should have been in charge of this, but unfortunately, the sports committee member had taken sick leave for the past two days.
Wen Tan’s fair ears turned a little red. His good buddy couldn’t stand it and shouted, “The sports meet is for winning glory for the class! Shouldn’t the class committee set an example?! Class monitor, you sign up first! What about the class representative? Where is our class representative?”
The boy deliberately made a loud noise so that the whole class could hear.
Laughter immediately erupted below, and the students all joined in the teasing. The class representative was Yan Wei. When it came to class representatives, Yan Wei’s name was much louder than Wen Tan’s.
Yan Wei was caught off guard by being called out. She really had no talent in sports, and even because her physical fitness was relatively poor, she could only barely pass PE class. She avoided such activities like the plague unless participation was mandatory.
In her past life, during the sports meet, Jiang Youyi’s leg injury hadn’t healed, but she still signed up for the 1600-meter long-distance race. Afraid that Jiang Youyi wouldn’t be able to finish, she refused to sign up for any events under the pretense of not feeling well and selfishly took on logistical work. As a result, Jiang Youyi stubbornly ran the entire distance and didn’t even take the water she offered.
Yan Wei sighed inwardly, suddenly looked up from her textbook, and gave the class monitor on the podium a bright smile. “Then sign me up for the long-distance race, 1600 meters.”
The noisy classroom went silent for a moment. Zhou Xiaoxiao didn’t have time to swallow a mouthful of hot water and sprayed it all over the podium with a “pfft.” Before she could clean up the mess in front of her, she turned around in horror and grabbed Yan Wei’s shoulders. “Really? Are you serious? You’re not joking, are you? You have low bl00d sugar, and you want to run 1600 meters?”
“Low bl00d sugar isn’t a heart disease, why can’t I run?” Yan Wei chuckled and swatted away Zhou Xiaoxiao’s hands.
Zhou Xiaoxiao looked dazed.
Good! As expected of the goddess! She chose the most difficult event right away!
Suddenly, the classroom became even noisier. The male students who had been teasing earlier laughed loudly. “Class monitor! Did you hear that! The class representative wants to run 1600 meters, hurry up and write it down!”
Wen Tan had never seen Yan Wei smile like that before. He was so distracted that he almost made a fool of himself. He also remembered Yan Wei’s low bl00d sugar, hesitated for a few seconds, and whispered, “Why don’t… you change to another event? 1600 meters is too difficult. What about long jump, high jump, shot put… no one has signed up for those yet.”
The students in the class burst into laughter, becoming even more energized. “Class monitor! You’re being too biased!”
Wen Tan looked embarrassed, but he stubbornly looked at Yan Wei, hoping she would change her mind.
“I’ve thought it over, just 1600 meters. Please help me sign up, class monitor, thank you,” Yan Wei said and lowered her head to continue organizing her notes, ignoring everyone’s teasing and noise.
Wen Tan couldn’t persuade Yan Wei, so he had to record the event Yan Wei was participating in first. His pen tip paused, and two seconds later, he wrote his own name in the blank space after the 2000 meters for the boys’ group.
The two names were on the same line on the sign-up sheet, neatly arranged.
At this moment, a girl passed by him, glanced at the sign-up sheet under his palm, and said, “Give me the pen, I want to sign up,” snatching the signing pen from his hand and quickly writing her name in a certain column on the form.
Wen Tan’s dazed expression was a bit funny. Jiang Youyi put down her pen and walked down from the podium. On her way back to her seat, she was stopped by the pretty female classmate who impolitely stuck out a leg to block the aisle and asked her, “What event did you sign up for?”
“Guess,” Jiang Youyi said playfully, then lightly kicked Yan Wei’s heel and stepped over her calf to go to her own seat in the back row.
Wen Tan stared blankly at the sign-up sheet. A few flamboyant characters had been added to the form, closely following Yan Wei’s name, the strokes overflowing the borders, lying across the two originally side-by-side names like a wall covered in thorns.
After evening self-study, Jiang Youyi left early. Yan Wei tidied up her desk, picked up a collection of incorrect questions, thought for a moment, then put it down and heard Zhou Xiaoxiao ask her, “Going back to the dorm together?”
“No, I’m going to the sports field.”
“Going to the sports field to run?” Zhou Xiaoxiao remembered the 1600 meters Yan Wei had signed up for and still couldn’t understand it, but she herself had signed up for the 400-meter sprint, so she changed her mind. “I’ll go too, sharpening the spear before the battle, even if it’s not fast, it’ll be sharp!”
Yan Wei laughed at her. “Not going back to review? The midterm exams are coming up soon.”
“A day or two doesn’t matter, exercising is also very important!” Zhou Xiaoxiao said righteously and confidently.
The two went to the sports field together. Yan Wei did a simple warm-up, stepped onto the track, and slowly entered her practice state. Zhou Xiaoxiao, a sprinter, didn’t speed up and walked alongside Yan Wei, casually starting a topic, “You and Jiang Youyi have a pretty good relationship. She’s such a quiet person, how did you guys meet?”
How did they meet?
Yan Wei tilted her head and thought for a moment. This question was too far in the past for the current her, and she couldn’t clearly remember how they met specifically. However, there was one memorable event that she still couldn’t forget.
In their first year of high school, before the division into arts and sciences, she and Jiang Youyi happened to be in the same class and the same dormitory. They maintained a lukewarm classmate relationship for a semester, and their understanding of each other only reached the level of knowing their names.
But as the best and worst students in the dormitory, in the eyes of other classmates, they were like fire and water.
High school students were most prone to prejudice due to personality clashes. Jiang Youyi was unsociable, went her own way, was unconventional, and wouldn’t proactively show friendliness to anyone, naturally becoming the target of other girls’ idle time.
Someone, she didn’t know who, took the lead in ostracizing Jiang Youyi. During the lunch break, taking advantage of Jiang Youyi returning a little late, they locked the door from the inside and wouldn’t let her in. Coincidentally, Yan Wei also stayed in the classroom that day to do a few extra problems, and when she returned, she caught the scene of Jiang Youyi being blocked outside the dormitory door.
A few unconcealed giggles could still be faintly heard from inside the door.
“I’ll do it,” Yan Wei stood behind Jiang Youyi. This was probably their first conversation.
“No need.”
Jiang Youyi was very cool, not even turning her head when she replied.
Yan Wei blinked. She was actually just in a hurry and didn’t mean to help, but Jiang Youyi seemed to have misunderstood her intention.
Then, with a loud bang, Yan Wei’s ears went deaf for a few seconds.
The door opened, the lock was broken, the laughter inside disappeared, and several girls trembled in fright, actually subconsciously making way to both sides.
Jiang Youyi withdrew the foot that had kicked the door, shook off her bag, walked in as if nothing had happened, threw her bag onto her bed, and then went into the washroom to wash up.
She didn’t speak, and no one dared to open their mouths. You could hear a pin drop in the dorm room.
Yan Wei stood outside the door, her heartbeat suddenly racing uncontrollably fast.
This girl was so arrogant.
