Yan Wei stared at these words for a while, then heard the sound of high heels clicking on the floor outside the restroom. She closed the diary, put it back in her bag, patted her face, wiped away the moisture from the corner of her eye with her little finger, and came out of the restroom to meet Zhou Xiaoxiao who had come to find her.
“Are you okay?” Zhou Xiaoxiao asked worriedly.
Yan Wei was a little surprised by this seemingly careless old classmate’s delicate mind. Seeing that Yan Wei didn’t speak, Zhou Xiaoxiao walked over and patted the back of her hand, “It’s rare for everyone to get together, don’t think about unhappy things.”
“Yeah,” Yan Wei nodded, “I’m fine. Maybe it’s just too cold recently and I caught a little cold.”
“Then why are you wearing so little?” Zhou Xiaoxiao nagged like an old mother, and Yan Wei was helpless, allowing her to pull her away.
In the KTV room, Yan Wei had a little wine, but it was really nothing, and she only had two cups before Zhou Xiaoxiao stopped her. Zhou Xiaoxiao unceremoniously drove away the male classmates who tried to persuade her to drink more, “Go, go, go, get out of here, the goddess has a cold and can’t drink!”
After sending the male classmates away, she turned around and put a glass of honey water in front of Yan Wei, “I told you, you have a cold, why are you drinking alcohol? Drink this!”
Yan Wei responded, and Zhou Xiaoxiao’s song came on, so she was called away by her husband. Yan Wei listened to the noise around her and suddenly felt a little sleepy.
She leaned against the corner of the sofa to rest, and unexpectedly fell asleep as soon as she closed her eyes.
She heard a sudden and urgent ringing in her ears, strange and distant, like the alarm clock in high school.
Yan Wei turned over and pulled the blanket over her head.
•••••
A blanket? Isn’t she at the KTV?
Yan Wei opened her eyes and saw the mottled ceiling, the heart-shaped paper cutouts and the stars and moon cut from card paper that had been specially pasted for an artistic dormitory, all so familiar yet so strange to Yan Wei.
The dream was too real, so real that she could clearly see the cobwebs in the corner that hadn’t been cleaned up and the math formula written on the headboard by some senior sister.
She was lost in thought for a long time until a roommate called her, “Yan Wei, if you don’t get up for morning reading, you’ll be late.”
Morning reading?
Yan Wei looked down from the bed incredulously at the roommate who was busy packing her stuff.
The person who had just spoken was tidying up her small bag while looking up at Yan Wei on the upper bunk. The young and childish round face had cute baby fat, and her familiar brows and eyes overlapped with the grown-up Zhou Xiaoxiao, making Yan Wei feel a little dazed.
Just an hour ago, Zhou Xiaoxiao was still talking to her about her married life!
There were eight people in their dormitory in high school, and seven of them had already gotten up and were busy packing their things. Two of them had gotten up early and had already gone to the classroom. Only Yan Wei, who usually left the earliest, was still in bed.
Such an abnormal behavior for a top student finally made her roommates feel strange. Zhou Xiaoxiao saw Yan Wei’s pale face and worriedly said, “Yan Wei, are you sick? Are you feeling unwell? Why don’t we ask for a leave of absence for you and you can rest in the dormitory?”
The real scene, the familiar environment, it was almost like the real thing.
Yan Wei pinched the pad of her finger hard.
It hurt.
“No need, you guys go first, I’ll get up right away!” Her belated reply changed its tone due to surprise.
Zhou Xiaoxiao suddenly stood up, tiptoed, and reached out to touch Yan Wei’s forehead.
Yan Wei: “…”
“Okay, you don’t have a fever.” Zhou Xiaoxiao breathed a sigh of relief, “Don’t force yourself, if you don’t feel well, just ask for a leave of absence and rest.”
So Zhou Xiaoxiao took care of her like this when she was still studying? No, this is clearly just a dream!
After her roommates left, Yan Wei quickly got out of bed and splashed some water on her face to try to wake herself up.
Through the mirror with water marks, Yan Wei saw a delicate melon-seed face, thick eyelashes carrying water droplets, a bit green, with a dazed look, and her bangs were also a little wet, with water droplets dripping down the tips of her hair one by one.
Yan Wei looked around, the clothesline was full of colorful clothes hung with various types of hangers, and there was a rusty iron net outside the window. Students were laughing and playing as they passed by downstairs, and the air was mixed with the smell of laundry detergent and the fragrance of early spring flowers.
It’s not a dream.
She’s in school, in high school.
How could this be? Could it be that her failure in the college entrance examination, her repetition, and her reunion with her classmates in her second year of graduate school were all just a dream?
No way, if it was a dream, how could she remember so clearly?
Then how else could she explain it?
Before Yan Wei could figure it out, the dormitory auntie came to clear the room. The auntie was about to close the door when she suddenly found someone still in the room, and surprised, she called Yan Wei out and told her to go to class quickly.
Yan Wei couldn’t remember what the morning reading was today. She went back and put on her school uniform jacket, took her thermos bottle that was standing by the pillow and a few books that were pressed under the pillow and was about to leave. Before leaving, she looked down at the cover of the textbook in her hand.
The second semester of high school.
On the way to the teaching building, she was in a daze. Worried about being late, her classmates quickened their pace, one after another passing Yan Wei. A male classmate recognized the girl’s back, smiled and ran up, intending to pass by from the left, but accidentally patted Yan Wei’s right shoulder, “Yan Wei!”
The book in Yan Wei’s hand fell to the ground with a clatter.
The male classmate was startled and quickly apologized, “Oops, sorry, sorry, let me pick it up for you!”
But Yan Wei didn’t look at him. She stopped in front of the teaching building, looking at the time scrolling on the LED banner above.
March 28, 2013.
“Yan Wei?” The boy waved his hand in front of Yan Wei’s eyes, “What’s wrong with you?”
Yan Wei took the book from him and said in a muffled voice, “Thank you,” and then hurried away without even looking at who it was.
She stepped into the classroom as the bell rang for the morning reading class. The teacher hadn’t come yet, and Yan Wei stood at the door of the classroom, taking a few seconds to recall where her seat was, and at the same time glancing at the noisy students in the classroom.
As if by some kind of arrangement, Yan Wei’s eyes swept across the back row of seats and inadvertently met the eyes of the girl in the corner by the window, then looked away.
The girl with the cute student haircut quickly lowered her head and pretended to write something on the draft paper.
The boy who had just spoken followed her and looked confused, just as he was about to speak, the clear sound of high-heeled shoes tapping on the corridor floor rang out.
Yan Wei came back to her senses and looked at the boy blocking her way, “Excuse me, thank you.”
The boy subconsciously stepped aside, and Yan Wei quickly walked back to her seat.
“What are you standing there for?” The English teacher appeared behind the boy, frowning sternly, “Have you memorized your text? You’re the first one I’ll check.”
The boy: “…” speechless.
Yan Wei’s seat was in the front three rows with the best view. Her deskmate, Zhou Xiaoxiao, saw her coming over and pulled out the chair for her, “You didn’t ask for leave? Did you eat breakfast?”
“No, I didn’t have time.” Yan Wei put down her books and thermos, sat down, and then looked back at the window seat in the back row.
Jiang Youyi maintained her writing posture and didn’t look up. Her long bangs blocked her eyes, and Yan Wei couldn’t see the expression on her face.
When she turned back, there was an Alpine candy on the desk.
“It’s a new flavor.” Zhou Xiaoxiao said and continued to bury her head in her book.
Yan Wei thanked her, peeled off the candy wrapper and stuffed it into her mouth. The cola-flavored Alpine, a taste from a long time ago.
As a student, she had the habit of taking notes, and Yan Wei had added special marks in front of the section numbers of the textbook she needed to memorize. Although she had forgotten the content, she had been using English until graduate school, so it wasn’t difficult to pick it up.
Hearing her deskmate recite the text, Zhou Xiaoxiao was very surprised.
“What’s wrong?” Yan Wei asked with a mouthful of candy.
“Oh, nothing, it’s just that I’m surprised that the top student didn’t prepare the text in advance.” Zhou Xiaoxiao drew lines on the book.
Yan Wei smiled and didn’t answer, her eyes fell back on the textbook.
Yan Wei was absent-minded for the whole morning, and it took her two classes to gradually recover. During this time, she tried several times to get herself out of the dream, but her head would hurt when she hit the desk, and her tongue would hurt when she bit it, and the more pain she felt, the more awake she became.
Zhou Xiaoxiao looked at her distracted deskmate with worry, “Yan Wei, what’s wrong with you? Don’t overthink it!”
During the previous math class, Zhou Xiaoxiao watched helplessly as Yan Wei handed in the mostly empty test paper, and she was completely out of sorts.
Yan Wei was lying listlessly on the desk, not knowing how many times she had answered Zhou Xiaoxiao’s question, “I’m fine.”
She just had to accept a bizarre fact.
She had returned to the past, with her memories.
It was the second day after Jiang Youyi’s birthday, and she had just rejected Jiang Youyi’s confession last night.
There was still a year and three months until the college entrance examination.
Besides anxiety, there was also a bit of…
Luck.
During the big break, there was still 10 minutes before class started.
Yan Wei prepared herself mentally and got up.
Jiang Youyi happened to pass by, and looking at the female classmate who suddenly stood in her way, her expression was a little subtle.
“Move aside.” Jiang Youyi said.
Yan Wei didn’t move, she moved her lips and asked dryly, “Where are you going? To the restroom?”
Jiang Youyi finally looked up, her black glass bead-like pupils met Yan Wei’s.
Yan Wei supported the desk with one hand, her thumb nervously pressing against the edge of the desk.
Half a minute later, the chemistry teacher walked into the classroom with a teacup, placed the test papers on the podium, and waved to a girl not far away, “Class representative, take the papers and distribute them.”
“Class representative, the teacher is calling you.” This was the second sentence Jiang Youyi had said.
Yan Wei let out a sigh of relief and made way, Jiang Youyi walked past her to the podium and glanced at the chemistry test papers.
The outermost one was Yan Wei’s.
Full marks, tsk.
Jiang Youyi went out, and Yan Wei picked up the test papers on the podium. Several boys scrambled to help, and the class monitor also came over to get a small stack. He seemed to want to talk to Yan Wei, but Yan Wei didn’t notice him.
The fourth period was physical education class. At the beginning of the semester, it was rare for teachers to occupy the class, so the physical education teacher asked the sports committee members to organize the students to run laps, and after running, they would be dismissed for free activities.
There were three laps in total. After two laps, someone in the female team suddenly fell down, causing a commotion.
“It’s Yan Wei, Yan Wei fainted!”
As soon as the shout fell, a figure rushed over like a gust of wind, carrying Yan Wei on her back before all the boys, and rushed towards the infirmary.
When Yan Wei woke up, her deskmate, Zhou Xiaoxiao, was sitting by the bed.
“You’re finally awake!” Zhou Xiaoxiao stood up, “Does your head still hurt? Shall I call the school doctor to check on you?”
“I’m fine, no need.” Yan Wei replied, her eyes scanned the empty infirmary and asked, “Did you send me here?”
“No, it was Jiang Youyi. She also told me not to tell you.” Zhou Xiaoxiao cheerfully betrayed her classmate who had just asked her to keep it a secret, “It’s so weird, it’s not just me who saw it, she did a good deed and doesn’t want people to say it?! I won’t!”
Yan Wei suddenly felt relieved and couldn’t help but laugh, “You’re so rebellious.”
“You’re the rebellious one!” Zhou Xiaoxiao rolled her eyes, “You don’t eat breakfast in the morning and you faint?”
Yan Wei smiled and didn’t care, “It’s not that serious.”
“You fainted and it’s not serious?” Zhou Xiaoxiao was angry, “You don’t know how anxious those boys in the class were! I bet that starting tomorrow, someone will bring you breakfast!”
“It’s not that exaggerated.” Yan Wei felt that she had rested well and glanced at the wall clock, “Let’s go, I’ll pay for lunch.”
Having just finished physical education class, they arrived at the cafeteria a few minutes earlier than the other classes. Yan Wei and Zhou Xiaoxiao got their food and saw Jiang Youyi sitting there alone.
Yan Wei walked over with her tray, and Jiang Youyi put down her chopsticks and stood up. Without giving Yan Wei a chance to speak, she left directly.
She still had more than half of her food left on her plate.
Yan Wei: “…” Maybe she thought too simply.
It couldn’t be, really.
