Confession to You in Early Summer (GL) - Chapter 5
Yan Wei returned to the classroom to organize her notes, unconsciously humming the song Jiang Youyi had sung that night.
She didn’t sing the lyrics, just humming the melody softly, but she really had no talent in music. Zhou Xiaoxiao couldn’t figure out what tune she was humming, so she leaned closer and asked, “What song is this?”
“Tsai Min-you’s ‘I Can’,” Yan Wei replied without looking up.
Zhou Xiaoxiao seemed quite interested. “So it’s this one! I thought it sounded familiar! You like this song too?”
Yan Wei nodded. “Yeah, I like it, it’s quite nice.”
Although the original version was also good, she preferred the way Jiang Youyi sang it.
When singing, Jiang Youyi’s voice was a bit different from her usual voice, softer and more delicate, very gentle, and also…magnetic.
Of course, in Yan Wei’s memory, Jiang Youyi singing to her was already seven years ago, and the singing in her memory might have been beautified by her subconscious.
Zhou Xiaoxiao saw Yan Wei’s eyes crinkle after saying it was nice and smiled unconsciously. It seemed she really liked it.
She lowered her head, using the drawer to block her phone, searched for the song, and added it to her playlist.
Now she had the same song that the goddess Yan liked, hee hee.
Jiang Youyi walked into the classroom as the bell rang for class. When she passed by Yan Wei, her bangs fell down, obscuring her eyes. Yan Wei stopped humming and didn’t look up. The two acted like strangers, as if their brief exchange in the corner of the top floor had never happened.
The next two days were uneventful. Yan Wei gradually found her high school study rhythm again. Although the results weren’t significant in the short term, it was all knowledge she had learned and mastered before. With reasonable time management, there was still a good chance of returning to her normal level before the college entrance exams.
The day before Qingming Festival was Wednesday, and the school organized a spring outing. All classes in the first and second years of high school had to participate.
The activity was held in the suburbs, a relatively famous scenic spot near the school called Yuedong Lake. Students participating in the activity would start from the designated starting point, walk around the lake, and reach the destination to complete the task.
Zhou Xiaoxiao had looked it up online, and the greenway along Yuedong Lake was about seventeen kilometers long in total.
For the first-year students participating in the outing for the first time, these seventeen kilometers were probably just a meaningless number in their minds. But for the second-year students who had already participated in one outing last year, these seventeen kilometers were simply a nightmare.
However, the students who had forgotten the pain once the wound healed were still highly enthusiastic about the outdoor activity that allowed them to escape their “prison.”
The first-year students set off in the morning, while the second-year students, under the authority of their teachers, listened to half a day of restless classes before taking the school-rented buses in the afternoon, led by their respective homeroom teachers, to the activity location.
Although there would be generous rewards for the students who reached the finish line first, and certificates would be awarded to the top three, the vast majority of students had no interest in winning any prizes. They just wanted to take advantage of the school’s rare act of conscience to relax properly.
Teacher Xu counted the number of people on the bus. When the bus stopped, several male students near the door ran off in a flash.
Yan Wei waited until most of the hurried students had left before leisurely getting off the bus, looked up at the bright and clear sky, and her mood also brightened.
She didn’t know when, but Jiang Youyi had already disappeared. Zhou Xiaoxiao accompanied Yan Wei, and they walked and chatted with the other classmates.
The scenery along Yuedong Lake was beautiful. Green hills and clear waters lined both sides of the road. Groups of seventeen and eighteen-year-old boys and girls walked in twos and threes, laughing and talking all the way. What met the eye was a vibrant picture of youth.
As they walked, Yan Wei lost the mood to appreciate the scenery.
Perhaps, as Zhou Xiaoxiao said, all her skill points were allocated to studying. Not only did she have no talent in music, but her athletic ability was also very poor.
Later, when she went to university, because of her outstanding appearance and temperament, she was often harassed by men. So she specifically went to an interest class to learn free combat for a period of time, and her physical fitness improved. But now, in high school, her physique was poor, full of problems, and she started panting after walking a few steps.
Zhou Xiaoxiao looked back at her. “Are you very tired? Do you want to rest for a while?”
“It’s okay,” Yan Wei waved her hand.
The class monitor and a few male students walked in front, occasionally looking back. The boys pushed each other and egged each other on. Before long, the class monitor was pushed forward, his face flushed, and he walked up to Yan Wei, mustering his courage. “Yan Wei, is your bag on your back very heavy? How about I help you carry it?”
The boys cheered, “Let him carry it! Let him carry it!” Yan Wei was a bit speechless. Anyone who didn’t know better would have thought they were watching a confession and urging the female lead to agree.
How childish.
“No need, thank you,” Yan Wei politely declined. “It’s not very heavy, I can carry it myself.”
The boys let out a chorus of sighs. The class monitor’s face turned even redder, and his ears almost burned. He mumbled something that Yan Wei didn’t hear, but he had already run off.
In late spring and early summer, although it wasn’t very hot, Yan Wei started sweating after walking for a while, so she took off her school uniform jacket and hung it over her arm.
Watching the male students laugh and joke as they ran into the distance, Zhou Xiaoxiao suddenly whispered, “The class monitor seems to like you.”
Of course, Yan Wei could also see it. Even if she hadn’t understood these things in her second year of high school, the her who had returned from the future wouldn’t be ignorant.
“I don’t like him.” Yan Wei’s answer was clear and straightforward. Not liking meant not liking. Even if someone heard her and repeated her words verbatim to the class monitor, her attitude would still be the same.
She felt that maybe it was because she hadn’t clearly told the class monitor it was impossible when they were in school that the boy had kept waiting.
Zhou Xiaoxiao laughed when she heard her so decisive, teasing, “The class monitor is handsome and a good person. Many girls in our grade like his type. Goddess Yan, are you really not considering it?”
“Considering what?” Yan Wei shrugged. “We’re all still students, early romance violates school rules.”
Even putting it mildly, a gentle, shy, and earnest boy like the class monitor hadn’t attracted her attention seven years ago, so it was even more impossible seven years later.
“Goddess Yan is truly a model student,” Zhou Xiaoxiao chuckled. “So, you won’t date before graduation?”
Yan Wei hummed in agreement, considering it a reply.
Just as she finished speaking, Jiang Youyi, who had disappeared earlier, suddenly walked past her, holding a bottle of Coke, drinking as she walked.
So she had gone to buy water just now.
Then she had probably heard most of the conversation between Yan Wei and Zhou Xiaoxiao just now.
At this moment, the class monitor, who had already walked away, returned, his face red, and handed Yan Wei a bottle of mineral water. “Unopened.”
Yan Wei smiled at the class monitor. “Really no need, class monitor. I have some. You drink it yourself.”
After speaking, she called out to Jiang Youyi, “Youyi, give me the water.”
Jiang Youyi was secretly observing from a few steps away. Caught off guard by Yan Wei calling her name, she didn’t react in time and subconsciously handed over the bottle of Coke she had just been drinking.
By the time she realized something was wrong, it was too late.
Yan Wei took the Coke, twisted open the cap, took a sip, and closed it again, all in one go.
Jiang Youyi: “!!!”
