- Chapter 24 - Shadow of Nothingness
The dark figure remained unmoved by emotions and seems like calmly assessing the situation.
“They’re here!”
In a flash, the shadowy figure flickered while leaving behind afterimages that swirling in the air. Mo Ling thought his eyes were playing tricks on him—how had the single opponent he and Long Qianqian were fighting suddenly become two?
As Mo Ling was momentarily distracted, Long Qianqian noticed a flaw in his stance. She immediately attacked forward to cover for him, but before she could react, the shadow grabbed her and dragged her toward the crack in the valley.
Mo Ling was angry and soared forward with the wind to rescue Long Qianqian, but it was too late.
Long Qianqian was already engulfed by the black mist coming from the shadow and charged her into the valley’s rift!
“I’ll kill you!”
Mo Ling was furious. He no longer cared about the searing heat in the air. He took a deep breath and push his internal energy to its limit.
His eyes turned crimson as he gathered his energy into his hands, gripping both the long spear on his back and the short gun that was hidden in his boot.
The compressed energy cannon he fired seemed inexhaustible as it blasted toward the shadow!
Fragments of ancient weapons scattered across the battlefield as it trembled—resonating with the spear in Mo Ling’s hands.
Now fully consumed by battle rage, Mo Ling relentlessly chased the shadow. Even as it dissolved into afterimages, it couldn’t escape his energy blasts!
But Long Qianqian had been right—the shadow had no physical form. Though Mo Ling’s energy blasts shattered it into black mist over and over again, the shadow itself did not shrink.
However, Mo Ling still have a chance. He will use his most perfected weapons that he had ever created.
At this moment, his body had reached its peak energy capacity—enough to rival a King-tier expert. His condensed energy was far stronger than any skill he could release.
And yet, all he could do was force the shadow to retreat!
“Hu… hu…”
Just then, Long Qianqian reappeared—she had not fall from the crack! She used her skills to cling to the cliffside and climb back up.
Mo Ling dashed over to cover her. Long Qianqian locked eyes with him, determination gleaming in her eyes. No words were needed; they instinctively stood back-to-back, guarding each other against further attacks.
But as Mo Ling felt the unsteady rise and fall of Long Qianqian’s breath against his back, his heart tightened.
“I’ll handle this.”
Mo Ling raised his spear to take aim, only to realize—the shadow had vanished!
They both searched through the thick mist but the shadow’s dark body was unmistakably noticeable. It couldn’t have disappeared unless it had fled far away or concealed itself completely.
Long Qianqian’s heartbeat pounded erratically. Though she hadn’t been injured in the fall, the valley’s geothermal heat had seeped into her body. Mo Ling couldn’t see it, but her skin had turned red-hot!
She need to stay calm.
Mo Ling took a step back, closed his eyes, and extended his senses. The valley was still trembling, and even the ancient weapon fragments’ subtle vibrations couldn’t escape his detection.
Where was it?
It felt as though he was flying close to the ground, scanning every corner until—
“The crack!”
Mo Ling shouted, flipping around to shield Long Qianqian behind him before unleashing a barrage of spear attacks toward the valley’s rift.
The cunning shadow had been sneaking through the crack of the ground, trying to get close!
Mo Ling showed no mercy, blasting the surrounding rocks into chaos.
“Huff… huff…”
Long Qianqian pressed a hand to her forehead, her vision growing dizzy—only to catch a glimpse of an afterimage streaking past her eyes!
She immediately activated her Phoenix Cry Strike. The thick mist erupted into bursts of golden flames, flaring like fireworks made of pure gold.
The shadow was forced back again.
But using her skill had further intensified her overheated body and before she could stop herself, she collapsed.
A flickering shadow swept past, and she was sent plummeting into the valley’s depths!
Mo Ling’s heart dropped as he watched her frail form tumble like a withered leaf. He immediately knew—she had lost consciousness. If he didn’t save her now, she would truly be lost forever!
Without hesitation, he unleashed his Soaring Dragon Swallow skill, mounting his spectral dragon and diving straight into the valley’s crevice.
“If I have to storm the underworld itself, so be it!”
Mo Ling roared, soaring through the air. He stretched out his hand to grab Long Qianqian’s pale arm, but just as his fingers were about to touch hers, a violent gust burst forth from the depths!
“Begone!”
Mo Ling hastily summoned a barrier of compressed energy to counter it, but this wind wasn’t ordinary—it was an underground gale!
Then, a black tornado, sharp like a drill, tore through his barrier and sent him and his dragon flying backward.
He crashed heavily onto the ground with the storm pinning him down, making it impossible to rise back.
The burning heat of the earth was unbearable, and above him, the shadow had reformed in midair. Though it had no face, Mo Ling could sense its killing intent.
Dying like this was not an option.
Instead of resisting, he slammed his hands onto the ground, activating his Crimson Emperor Seal.
A fiery red seal burst forth, breaking the wind’s suppression and propelling Mo Ling high into the air—straight toward to the shadow.
For the entire battle, he had never once landed a direct hit.
This time, he would rip that shadow apart with his own hands!
The shadow flickered, cunning as ever, and flipped behind him, unfazed by the Crimson Emperor Seal, striking from the rear.
Mo Ling deliberately didn’t dodge, baiting it in.
But as the shadow drew closer, confusion flickered across his mind.
Even a formless entity should have a core, but Mo Ling felt nothing. He hurriedly tried to evade but was too slow—he had to block with his bare hands.
Two opposing forces collided, one black, one white.
A dazzling explosion.
Sparks flew.
Wait!
The sparks had no real offensive power.
But the shadow recoiled as if electrocuted and scrambling backward, refusing to come any closer.
It feared fire!
That damn thing was afraid of fire!
Mo Ling grinned, his lips curling into a ruthless smirk as he leaped forward.
The shadow didn’t dodge. It seemed to be waiting for him.
But as they clashed, Mo Ling avoided its attacks and revealed the flames he had secretly gathered in his hands.
“Heh.”
His eyes locked onto the shadow, a cruel satisfaction flashing within them.
The shadow realized it too late—it was already being pressed into the ground by the Crimson Emperor Seal.
Mo Ling’s flaming hand pierced through the seal, igniting the shadow’s form.
It let out no sound.
But its defeat was already sealed.
The black mist scattered and dissipated instantly.
“Hey…”
As Mo Ling landed, adjusting his breath and gathering his energy, he heard a weak cry behind him.
Turning coldly, he saw two figures trembling in the mist.
“Help us!”
The two disheveled figures practically threw themselves at his feet like desperate to be saved.
Mo Ling had little interest in them and turned away, vanishing into the fog.
“Senior brother… we’re doomed! Our sect sent fifteen people into this place. Seven were turned into those cursed corpses outside. The other eight fell into the valley. And that shadow… if we hadn’t hidden in the crevice, we’d be dead by now!”
So they were disciples of the Dayan Sword Sect.
Their sect was based at the foot of Mirror Ring Mountain—they should have been familiar with this place.
Mo Ling had calm down and emerged from the mist.
“So, you’re disciples of the sect. I thought you were wandering souls—my mistake.”
