- Chapter 31 - The Monk of Meat and Wine
“Did this many people really find the place?”
Someone came up and asked Mo Ling right away.
Mo Ling looked at the two men. Their clothes were torn, and they wore straw shoes, but their eyes were bright, and they carried themselves with confidence. He politely cupped his hands and said, “I just arrived too. I’m still deciding which way to go in.”
The two men looked at each other. One stroked his messy beard and said, “This place feels very strange. It’s dangerous for you to go in alone. Take our advice and go back.”
“Hey, there are more people!”
Another group arrived, dressed in elegant robes—they were clearly disciples from a sect in Northern Cold Continent.
They saw Mo Ling and the two ragged men but didn’t even glance at them. Right away, they pulled out some magical tools to scout the way.
Mo Ling noticed the two glowing red rods and hoped they could lead those disciples to the temple.
The two old men tried to warn the sect disciples but only got cold stares. That group quickly ran into the path pointed out by the magic tools.
Anyone who could make it through the corpse-fiend checkpoint and reach this valley was clearly not ordinary.
Mo Ling didn’t want any more trouble—he just wanted to find Long Qianqian.
“Masters,” he said to the old men, “it’s no use trying to stop those who are meant to die. If my wife hadn’t fallen in, I’d have left already. You don’t need to worry about me—I’ll wait here.”
The two old men nodded. “So many went in already. We should check it out too. Let’s go.”
Once they left, more voices echoed from the valley.
Mo Ling didn’t want to talk to anyone else. He picked a direction and squeezed through a gap between tree roots.
He moved deeper inside. Strangely, he didn’t encounter any corpse-fiends. He started to doubt—maybe he was going the wrong way?
He was sure the temple he saw earlier was the center of this whole area.
If there was no smell or corpse-fiends, that meant he was moving farther from the temple.
Long Qianqian was strong. Unless she was trapped, she wouldn’t stay hidden this long. That thought made Mo Ling anxious.
“All roads lead to Rome! I will find it!”
He headed straight in and ended up at the same tunnel where he had seen Shuiyue.
The tunnel ahead led directly to the ancient well and the center temple. Another path on the left also had corpse-fiends before, so the direction was right!
Holding his breath against the stench, he followed the tunnel. The space opened up into a massive cave—much larger than the one near the temple.
This area was higher up. From the slope, he could look down and see the entire temple.
On the slope stood a single ancient pagoda. It had seven levels—clearly a Buddhist structure. That meant it must be connected to the temple!
As he got closer, Mo Ling suddenly felt someone watching him. He looked up. On the seventh floor, two people were sitting on the slanted edge of the roof. Somehow, they were sitting there steadily.
“Mo Ling!”
A shout broke the silence. It was Long Qianqian!
Mo Ling didn’t hesitate. He flew up toward her immediately.
When he reached the top, he saw her tied up and hanging from the edge. A big monk was stepping on the rope that held her.
“Ha! You ignored the road and came flying! ”
The monk had half a pig’s head in one hand and a wine jug in the other. His robe was stained with grease and wine.
He let out a loud burp. The wave was so strong, it knocked Mo Ling back several meters.
As the pagoda grew smaller in the distance, Mo Ling gathered his spiritual energy and barely managed to steady himself in midair.
“Hahaha! Boy, if you came a second later, this woman would’ve fallen! ”
Mo Ling was furious. He shouted, “You meat-and-wine monk! You disrespect gods and heaven! When you die, the oil cauldron will fry all the fat off you! ”
A powerful dragon formed in midair. Mo Ling stepped on its head, and it charged the monk, jaws wide open.
“Interesting!”
The dragon swallowed the monk whole—but the monk just laughed from inside!
While the monk was distracted, Mo Ling shot forward from beneath the dragon, trying to save Long Qianqian.
But just as he reached for the rope, her face changed and she shouted, “Watch out!”
Mo Ling had already sensed the monk behind him.
He jumped back just in time, dodging the strike.
The monk laughed loudly. He wiped his greasy mouth with a sleeve and lifted Long Qianqian like a chick, standing calmly on the pagoda edge.
“Fun! Let’s play again!”
He sat back down, grabbed the other half of the pig head, and kept eating.
He had let Mo Ling try a sneak attack on purpose!
Mo Ling wasn’t stupid. After two tries, he already understood their power gap.
The monk seemed defenseless, but his senses were sharp—he didn’t even need to look to know Mo Ling’s moves.
“Heh, you want me to play with you? I refuse.”
The monk raised his foot. The rope slid fast—Long Qianqian was about to fall!
But Mo Ling didn’t panic. He even folded his arms.
The monk stomped the rope and yelled, “She’s your wife! You really don’t care?”
Mo Ling sat cross-legged on the dragon’s head.
“Heh, you saw me in the temple earlier. You waited for me here because you wanted to negotiate. So, you won’t let her die.”
The monk froze. He chewed his meat and stared at Mo Ling angrily.
Clearly, he wasn’t happy about being figured out.
Mo Ling, on the other hand, felt pleased. He lifted his head and started admiring the view.
“This pagoda must be hundreds of years old, like the temple. It’s amazing how well it’s preserved underground. Mirror Ring Mountain hides such treasures—Great Yan Sword Sect will be thrilled.”
The monk grunted and pulled Long Qianqian back up.
“This woman is strange too. She fell from that high, yet didn’t make a sound! ”
Long Qianqian kept her mouth shut but gave the monk a fierce glare.
Mo Ling knew—if she stayed in the monk’s hands, he’d never have the upper hand. He sighed and said, “You’re a monk, taking someone’s wife. What is that supposed to mean? ”
The monk ate meat and drank wine but never broke the rule about lust. When he heard this, he cursed, “Don’t slander your grandpa! I’m clean, okay? ”
Mo Ling spat. “Clean my foot! Give back my wife, and I might believe you! ”
The monk pulled Long Qianqian closer and said seriously, “This woman has a connection to the Buddhist path. I want to take her as my disciple.”
Mo Ling frowned, pointing angrily. “A monk taking a female disciple? That’s rich! I bet you’re connected to that female monk in the ancient well too! ”
But the monk just kept drinking, looking unbothered.
“Say what you want. But I will take her as my disciple! ”
