- Chapter 33 - The Past of the Woman in the Ancient Well
After jumping into the Abyss of Lost Souls, the two of them were surprisingly unharmed.
It turned out that this abyss housed plants that could confuse one’s state of mind.
Within it, Master Kong Hai witnessed all the painful experiences the woman had endured in her life. Moved by compassion, his heart ached even more for her, and he searched desperately to find her.
As the saying goes, unique pity often blossoms into deeper feelings — let alone when a man and woman are alone together for such a long time. Their emotional bond inevitably deepened.
Kong Hai soon realized that the abyss itself was binding him, challenging him with illusions and fantasies.
Yet each time he used his cultivation and firm Buddhist resolve to suppress these illusions.
No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t defeat the monster within the abyss, which meant he couldn’t find the woman.
Being a man of deep insight, he soon discovered the reason.
Each time he “withstood temptation” and steadied his heart, he was, in fact, suppressing his true feelings out of fear.
And it was this very self-deception that allowed the abyssal demon to feed off his spiritual energy.
Kong Hai finally accepted his true feelings and admitted — he had fallen for her.
Once he acknowledged this mortal emotion, he triumphed over the abyssal demon and found the unconscious woman.
He embraced her.
“Their love back then was earth-shattering,” the monk said. “It sparked fierce criticism and slander. The entire Buddhist sect condemned Kong Hai for falling into hell and called the woman a daughter of hell.”
Mo Ling scoffed, “If the world had blessed their union, perhaps Kong Hai would have reconsidered his responsibilities and peacefully separated from her. But when the whole world denies your love, the only thing two people can do is hold on to each other even tighter — and fall deeper into extremity.”
The monk nodded thoughtfully. “You’re not wrong. It was for her that Kong Hai ultimately embraced demonic ways.”
As it turned out, a faction of radical Buddhist monks blamed Kong Hai for disgracing their faith. They decided to kill the woman he loved.
After her death, Kong Hai went completely mad. He sat in meditation within the temple for ten days and nights, bleeding from all seven orifices. He died seated, his body blackened and shriveled, as if scorched by karmic fire.
The 3,000 monks at the temple, fearing the scandal, secretly buried his corpse at night and falsely proclaimed his “attainment of Nirvana,” even molding a golden statue in his place.
But thorny brambles began growing wildly over his grave. When monks were injured by them, they would fall ill that very night — craving human bl00d and flesh. Overnight, the temple walls were soaked in bl00d.
The survivors fled and sought help from other temples.
“One of them came to my temple — Xuanhua Temple,” said the monk. “Our abbot Konggu was Kong Hai’s senior brother.”
After learning what happened, Abbot Konggu knew the matter was grave and assembled the most respected monks of the time to go to the cursed temple.
When they arrived, they saw the deranged monks running madly in the mountains. The senior monks quickly formed a seal to trap the madness within the temple.
It was Konggu who uncovered the truth and told everyone:
They dug up Kong Hai’s coffin — only to find the body missing and the woman lying inside instead. Everyone recognized her as the woman Kong Hai had loved.
Most assumed Kong Hai had turned into a corpse demon too, but Konggu shook his head.
“My master believed Kong Hai used his own body to summon a demonic entity and made a pact to resurrect the woman, but he was deceived.”
“The resurrection method required corpse-demon energy. That’s why so many brambles grew from his grave, spreading infection and turning others into corpse demons.”
After finishing, the monk fell silent along with everyone else.
“My brother… Perhaps you realized you were tricked in the end. Maybe that’s why you used your final strength to seal everyone within the temple’s grounds — to prevent the plague from reaching the outside world. Alas! ”
Long Qianqian bit her lip. “But the space got distorted. The temple grounds warped, and now, a thousand years later, it has resurfaced.”
Mo Ling gently shook his head. “I think the woman in the ancient well has completed her preparations. She deliberately warped the space to blur the temple’s boundaries — turning the entire Mirror Ring Mountain into her domain.”
Long Qianqian gasped in realization, “So there never was a ‘secret realm’ at all. Everything was just a trap — to lure more people in and turn them into corpse demons!”
Both Mo Ling and the monk nodded solemnly.
Qianqian, with sympathy for the tragic lovers, asked softly, “But can this demonic method truly bring her back?”
The monk’s eyes dimmed. “Master Konggu once said — how can one trust a demon? And how can dark arts restore the soul of a pure person? This is nothing but a powerful corpse-forging technique. The woman cannot truly return. She will become a terrifying corpse-demon king.”
Mo Ling thought of the woman in the ancient well — her presence suffocating and overwhelming. If such a being were released, it would bring unimaginable destruction.
“Monk,” Mo Ling said, voice resolute, “after hearing your story, even if I didn’t need the Golden Dragon Prayer Bead, I would still help you. Tell me, what exactly must I do?”
The monk clapped his shoulder gratefully.
“Excellent!”
“I must stay here to suppress the 3,000 corpse-demon monks. I cannot leave for even a day. Brother Mo — everything depends on you.”
He then gave Mo Ling the location of Thousand Buddha City and was just about to explain how to retrieve the Buddhist relic when Mo Ling suddenly sensed two heads poking out from beneath the tower.
He gripped the monk’s arm tightly and glanced downward, speaking quickly, “I understand. I’ll go now!”
As soon as the words left his mouth, a royal crimson seal came crashing down, followed by a golden prayer bead that burst with purifying light. Meanwhile, Long Qianqian played her jade flute, summoning a phoenix wind.
The triple assault shook the tower itself — yet when the dust settled, the intruders had vanished without a trace.
The monk was furious. “Even my prayer bead didn’t touch them? Unless they’re at marshal rank or above, that’s impossible! ”
Mo Ling’s mind raced — thinking about who could possess such power among those who’d entered earlier.
He pulled the furious monk back. “Don’t chase them. I know who the eavesdroppers are. If they heard the whole story but chose not to show themselves, they must have plans. We’ll run into them again at Thousand Buddha City.”
The monk, clasping his hands, finally nodded. “Fine. I leave it to you.”
Long Qianqian, stowing away her flute, asked urgently, “Where exactly is the Buddhist Robe of All Beings? And how do we get it? You need to be very clear.”
The monk nodded, calming himself down, and began explaining in detail.
