- Chapter 35 - Searching for the Old Men
Qianfo City: The Thousand Buddha City
In the early morning, a young monk in earth-colored robes was ringing the bell at the bell tower. Upon hearing the bell, many devout individuals would stop in their tracks, join their hands in prayer, and recite Buddhist scriptures.
It is said that this place was the first stop of Kong Hai after returning from the Brahman Kingdom. He stayed here for three months, teaching Buddhist scriptures, and it was here that the city gained a million followers.
Mo Ling and Long Qianqian stood beneath the bell, searching for their direction, both looking somewhat lost.
According to the monk’s words, the Qianfo (Robe of All Being) robe was supposed to be easy to find.
Enter Thousand Buddha City, locate the only Buddhist temple, and the Qianfo robe would be enshrined there.
“The old monk doesn’t even know how long it’s been since he came here. He may have never even been here, and this might all just be hearsay!” Mo Ling muttered.
There were no fewer than three thousand Buddhist temples in the city. Where could they possibly find the Qianfo robe?
They couldn’t just ask around; after all, this was a sacred Buddhist land. Who would dare to inquire unless they didn’t care about their life?
Long Qianqian glanced at Mo Ling’s slightly helpless expression, smiled slightly, and pulled him to sit at the city gate. She went off to buy two pancakes.
“I’ve been thinking, do you think those two old men have entered the city?”
Mo Ling took a bite of his pancake, feeling a little disappointed since there was no meat filling: “It seems like there’s no meat to be had in this Thousand Buddha City…”
Long Qianqian ignored Mo Ling’s complaint and continued, “We’ve been rushing here, so we might not be able to catch up. But those two old men may not be in a hurry; they might not have entered the city yet.”
It turned out that Long Qianqian had been paying attention to the people entering the city. There were only two types of people who came to Buddha City: small traders or those who came to worship Buddha.
And there were fewer traders, so it was easy to spot them.
Long Qianqian hadn’t seen the two elderly men Mo Ling had described.
“Then, would they change their disguise?” Mo Ling asked.
Long Qianqian shook her head confidently: “No. Since they managed to deceive you with this disguise, it means it’s quite effective. Besides, we’ve never seen them in person, so they won’t just be figured out by you.”
Mo Ling nodded in agreement. While eating his pancake, his eyes never stopped scanning the surroundings, keeping an eye on the situation inside the BuddhaTemple.
“So, you mean we should deal with those two old men first, and then search?” he asked.
Long Qianqian nodded. “When I bought the pancake earlier, I asked around. The shopkeeper told me that today is a day for Buddha worship, and there will be more people, which isn’t the best time to act.”
Mo Ling also noticed that all the shops in the street were serving vegetarian food, and he wasn’t keen on waiting around eating vegetarian food.
“Alright, I’ll follow your lead.”
Long Qianqian smiled and lightly tapped Mo Ling’s hand. She teasingly said, “You had already planned it all, but you waited for me to suggest it.”
Mo Ling smiled faintly and followed Long Qianqian as they walked out of the city.
The two old men were not in a hurry because they had killed quite a few people and looted a good amount of money in the rift. Naturally, they wanted to enjoy the road at a leisurely pace.
There were three stopping points in front of Thousand Buddha City: Liang City, Bai Men Town, and Duko Village.
Mo Ling and Long Qianqian first went back to Duko Village, where they enjoyed a hearty meal of stewed meat before starting to stroll through the streets.
A tea boy in the teahouse was walking along the street, trying to drum up business. Mo Ling called Long Qianqian and walked inside.
Long Qianqian frowned slightly as she saw Mo Ling wanting to take a break. “I’m not thirsty. Shall we come back later?”
The tea boy immediately greeted them with a smile and said, “Our tea is excellent. We even have fruit platters. You can sit down and rest even if you’re not thirsty. Are you two from out of town?”
Mo Ling smiled and sat down, asking, “Oh, you could tell?”
The tea boy wiped the table with a cloth and set up the chairs, then politely said, “Our village is right next to Buddha City. To be honest, outsiders don’t stay here much.”
Long Qianqian remembered that when they ate earlier, Mo Ling had subtly engaged with the tea boy. Now she understood his intent and sat down as well.
“I’ve heard that today is a day for Buddha worship. There must be many outsiders in Duko Village, right?” Long Qianqian asked.
The tea boy shook his head. “Not really. The people who come to worship Buddha are very devout. Even if there’s only one space to stand, they won’t leave the city.”
Long Qianqian sighed. “So, when strangers appear, you can tell right away?”
The tea boy poured a pot of brown tea and placed a plate of sunflower seeds on the table, smiling as he said, “Our shop faces the city gate. We can see everyone coming in and out.”
Mo Ling smiled and asked, “Well then, can you tell me if you’ve seen two old men who look like beggars but actually have the demeanor of immortals and talk calmly?”
The tea boy shook his head and laughed, “No, there are no such people here.”
At the table next to them sat a young monk, holding a meditation staff and wearing robes. After paying for his tea, he glanced at Mo Ling and Long Qianqian before heading towards Qianfo City (Thousand Buddha City).
Mo Ling immediately noticed that the monk had an unusual aura. Although he was bald, he was handsome, and his robes were worn with grace, as if he were a high monk who had achieved enlightenment long ago.
However, despite the monk hiding his aura, Mo Ling could still sense it.
This monk had a demonic energy!
Long Qianqian gently held Mo Ling’s hand, signaling him not to interfere.
As they walked out of the city gate, Mo Ling remained concerned about the monk.
“Do you think that monk is after the Robe of All Being?” he asked.
Long Qianqian dismissed Mo Ling’s concerns, calmly replying, “The robe has been a treasure for thousands of years. It’s normal for demons to covet it. In a few days, there will likely be more, but in all these years, who has succeeded?”
“Alright, let’s keep moving. Come on, wife, lead the way,” Mo Ling teased.
Long Qianqian bit her lip and stomped her foot, showing a girlish attitude. “I’m being serious. Don’t make jokes!”
There were more people in Bai Men Town, with people constantly coming and going at the city gate. Both Mo Ling and Long Qianqian believed that the two old men were most likely here.
So, they went to ask the most informed tea boy for news. To their surprise, a shop boy smiled and nodded. “Your two uncles are indeed staying at our shop. Hehe…”
Mo Ling and Long Qianqian looked at the tea boy’s ambiguous expression, confused, but they asked, “Tell us the room number. We’ll go meet them ourselves.”
The shop boy immediately stopped them. “They’re not here at night. You’ll find them empty-handed if you go to the room. Let me show you the way. Walk along this street to the end, turn left, and you’ll find them there.”
Mo Ling gave the tea boy a piece of broken silver and followed the directions given.
But to their surprise, it led them to a brothel!
Mo Ling curled his lips and chuckled, “I didn’t expect these two old men to be such old rogues!”
Long Qianqian bit her lip and said with anger, “They are truly hypocritical villains!”
After saying that, she raised her foot to enter, but Mo Ling stopped her.
“Where are you going?”
“To the brothel.”
“Is that where you should be going?”
Long Qianqian stared at Mo Ling coldly. “I’m a man now.”
