Dark-colored Fairy Tale: Seven Magicians - Chapter 23
Chapter 23
“Chloe, time to wake up and eat.”
A clear voice pierced the fake dream, waking the black-haired girl from her slumber and calming her heart.
Chloe slowly opened her eyes. Her blank, dark golden eyes gradually came into focus.
It was just a dream…
Liu Menglu had been listening at the door for a while. Seeing no movement inside, she glanced at her watch and knocked gently twice.
“Is Chloe not awake yet? Hurry and get up for breakfast. We have to go to school soon.”
“I’m already awake.”
“Then hurry up and get ready! The first class this morning is with the she-devil teacher. If we’re late, we’re in big trouble~”
“Okay.”
Chloe agreed again. Hearing the footsteps gradually fade away, she walked barefoot to the window, and yanked the curtains open, letting the golden sunlight shine all over her body.
It’s so warm.
How long has it been since I’ve had a dream like that?
If Liu Menglu hadn’t been in the dream, it would have been her official swearing-in day as a magical being.
Fayalon’s oath was only a few short sentences, but those sentences formed countless chains that firmly locked away the lives of countless magical beings.
Humans fantasized about magical girls, but they weren’t them. They were magical beings, a group of monsters born in darkness and hidden in darkness.
Perhaps because no sound had come from the room for a long time, the girl’s voice came again. This time, there was some confusion in her tone. “Chloe.”
Chloe didn’t daze off. She quickly put on her school uniform and came to the living room.
As she looked up, she saw the sunlight from the sky, like dancing fairies, scattered all over the living room. Liu Menglu was sitting at the dining table, one hand propping up her chin. Her blue eyes were soaked in the warm sunlight, and she was just looking at her.
Gentle and beautiful.
She really is like the sun. This is who she truly is.
So, I will never let Liu Menglu become a magical being like me. I won’t let that smile disappear or that warmth turn to ice.
Slowly moving her gaze away, Chloe came to the dining table and sat in the chair across from Liu Menglu.
On the pure white dining table, there were a few beautiful flowers, driving away the usual emptiness. Two delicious breakfasts were already placed on the table.
Liu Menglu hadn’t eaten yet. She was clearly waiting for her.
“You don’t have to wait for me,” Chloe said in a light tone. She picked up the bread on the table and took a bite. The taste was surprisingly good.
“I didn’t want to wait for you either. But I’m doing this to butter you up,” Liu Menglu said, tilting her head and blinking. She had the unique innocent charm of a young girl.
“Butter me up?” Chloe glanced at her.
“Yep~” Liu Menglu nodded, then looked at Chloe with a face full of expectation. “Can you see if I can become a magical girl~”
Hearing this, Chloe’s chewing on the bread paused slightly. She thought of the cold Liu Menglu in her dream, who had lost all her warmth.
She didn’t like her like that.
“No!” She flatly refused, which made the girl complain. “Why not?”
“Because magical beings are not magical girls,” Chloe explained, lowering her eyes. “The work of a magical being is fundamentally different from that of a magical girl. Don’t confuse reality with fiction just because of those weird animes.”
Liu Menglu didn’t care. She just said pitifully, “Okay, I know that magical girls and magical beings are different now. So can you let me become a magical being?”
Even though the girl was full of expectation, the answer was still no.
“I will not allow you to become a magical being.”
Liu Menglu was stunned. Her eyes gradually filled with mist. “Why? You’re younger than me, but you’re a magical being. Why can’t I be one?!”
Chloe emotionlessly ate her bread. “I told you that demons are corrupted from humans after being consumed by one of the Seven Deadly Sins: pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, lust, and gluttony.”
Liu Menglu nodded. She knew about this. But what did that have to do with her becoming a magical being?
Chloe took a bite of her bread. “Although they have become demons, they are still fundamentally human. So…”
Chloe didn’t continue, but Liu Menglu already knew what she was trying to say.
Magical beings kill demons, but they are also—humans.
This realization instantly made Liu Menglu’s rosy cheeks turn pale.
The smile on her face became a little stiff. She looked at Chloe, feeling almost helpless. At the end of the day, Liu Menglu was just a 17-year-old child living in an ivory tower. She wouldn’t even intentionally step on an ant. How could she, so kind-hearted, possibly kill people?
Chloe knew this, so she completely ignored Liu Menglu’s plea. With a blank expression, she nodded, confirming her answer.
At that moment, Liu Menglu felt a bucket of ice water pouring down from above, chilling her passionate heart. Only now did she truly understand why Chloe had always told her that magical beings and magical girls were different.
Magical girls in anime kill demons, and magical beings seem to kill demons as well, but in reality, they are truly killing people.
As for the matter with Lu Yumo, Liu Menglu had subconsciously ignored these things. But now, she couldn’t ignore them.
She almost fled, grabbing her school bag and leaving the house, leaving Chloe sitting upright in the white chair, calmly eating her breakfast, and then putting the finished plate into the dishwasher.
As for Liu Menglu’s untouched breakfast, Chloe found a clean container, packed it up, and planned to take it to school for her.
…
Liu Menglu entered the classroom in a daze. Her distracted look caught Lu Yuting’s attention.
At first, Lu Yuting thought Liu Menglu might not have slept well last night, but after a long time, Liu Menglu still hadn’t recovered. Lu Yuting started to worry.
“What’s wrong with you today? You look like you’re not all there.”
“Huh?” Liu Menglu looked at the person who spoke. Seeing that it was Lu Yuting, she was reminded of Lu Yumo.
Her face grew even paler as she thought of the cruelty in Chloe’s tone today.
She wanted to speak, but her throat was so dry. It was a long time before she finally asked in a hoarse voice, “I remember you have a brother.”
Lu Yuting was confused for a moment, then immediately refuted, “What nonsense are you talking about again? I don’t have a brother. You asked me this last time, too. But I’m an only child. Do you want me to show you my household registration book?”
Although she had already expected this answer, Liu Menglu’s heart still grew cold. At this moment, she also realized very clearly that Chloe had killed a person.
Whether it was being overly sensitive or cowardly, Liu Menglu wanted to back down. She suddenly didn’t want to see Chloe.
This might be what they call ‘Ye Gong Hao Long,’ to pretend to like something you actually fear.
