Dark-colored Fairy Tale: Seven Magicians - Chapter 54
Chapter 54
Awakening
Chloe struggled to lift her neck, scanning the girl in front of her over and over. Only after she was absolutely sure Liu Menglu was fine did her heart finally settle.
Her dark golden eyes filled with tenderness as she looked at the sleeping girl. A feeling of immense happiness welled up inside her, mixed with overwhelming guilt. If she had properly checked the factory grounds yesterday, or if she hadn’t brought Liu Menglu to watch their duel, then Liu Menglu wouldn’t have fallen from the second floor. Overcome with guilt, her dark golden eyes grew dim, and her expression filled with sadness.
It was then that the clock outside chimed nine times. It was 9 a.m.
Liu Menglu was awakened by the clock’s chimes. She rubbed her eyes and was about to check the time when she suddenly saw Chloe’s beautiful dark golden eyes. Unaware of Chloe’s self-reproach, she asked with joyful surprise, “You’re awake! Are you feeling better?”
Chloe nodded and turned the conversation to Liu Menglu. “How are you? I saw you fall from the second floor yesterday.”
Liu Menglu didn’t mention being restrained by Li Li. She simply said, “I was caught by Li Qiuyu’s father yesterday. I wasn’t hurt at all, not even a single hair was harmed.” With a mischievous wink, she stood up and spun around to show that she was perfectly fine.
“I’m glad you’re okay. But Li Qiuyu’s father?” Chloe was a little curious. Since he had shown up at their fight, it meant that Li Qiuyu’s father was also a magical being. Remembering her duel with Li Qiuyu, Chloe’s brows furrowed. Would Li Qiuyu’s father try to send her back to France?
Lost in that thought, Chloe’s frown deepened. “What kind of person is Li Qiuyu’s father?”
It was a simple question, but it opened a floodgate for Liu Menglu, who began to chatter excitedly about him. “Chloe, you’re so pretty, but how can her father be so fierce?” she sighed. “It must be so hard for a beautiful girl like Li Qiuyu. If my dad were that fierce, I wouldn’t even enjoy my food.”
Liu Menglu then began to gossip. “Chloe, do you think Li Qiuyu’s mom is really pretty? Li Qiuyu is so good-looking, and she doesn’t look like her dad at all, so her mom must have really strong genes.”
Liu Menglu’s comments held no malice, and Chloe knew that. But still…
Seeing Liu Menglu enthusiastically praising Li Qiuyu, Chloe couldn’t help but tug at her from behind.
“What is it?” Liu Menglu asked, confused. “Are you hungry? There’s food outside. Should I get you some?”
Chloe shook her head. This time, she pointed to her own face with a serious expression, her dark golden eyes focusing.
“Your face? What’s wrong with your face?” Liu Menglu still didn’t understand. She leaned in closer, touching their foreheads together in an intimate gesture. “You don’t have a fever. Are you not feeling well somewhere else?”
Seeing the genuine concern on Liu Menglu’s face, Chloe shook her head in frustration. She had never cared much about her appearance, but Lizbelle always said she was beautiful. So why didn’t Liu Menglu notice? She was definitely no less attractive than Li Qiuyu.
Just as Chloe began to doubt her looks, Liu Menglu spoke again. “Oh, that’s right. Chloe, Li Qiuyu gave you a pill yesterday. After you took it, your body started to recover really fast. I think that pill must have been really valuable. We should find a time to pay her back for it. I don’t know how much it costs. My allowance for this month isn’t enough, but I still have my New Year’s money.” Liu Menglu scratched her head, a little troubled. She had bought a few new figurines recently and wasn’t sure how much New Year’s money she had left. She would have to save more for emergencies.
The Boss
Chloe agreed with the idea. She didn’t like to be in debt to anyone, even though Li Qiuyu had certainly helped her. Chloe knew a bit about Chinese magical pills. Healing artifacts like the Seed of Healing consumed a person’s life potential, while Chinese pills did not. As the Chinese would say, they “not only treat the symptoms but also the root cause.” Looking at her rapid recovery, Li Qiuyu’s pill must have been an excellent one. Such a pill wasn’t easily acquired or something that could be measured in money. It was a debt of gratitude.
Of course, Chloe had a selfish motive. She wanted to take on the debt entirely herself so she could prevent any further contact between Liu Menglu and Li Qiuyu. She knew the Chinese saying: “He who lives near the water gets the fish first.”
“Sigh,” Liu Menglu sighed again, still worrying about the debt.
“Mengmeng, my boss will pay for this pill. Li Qiuyu won’t lose anything,” Chloe said.
“Your boss will reimburse you for things like that?” Liu Menglu was a little surprised. After getting a firm nod, she was even more intrigued. “Do magical beings all call their superiors ‘boss’? The man yesterday, his subordinates called him ‘boss’ too.”
Chloe didn’t explain. She seemed to implicitly accept the assumption.
“So, can I call you boss from now on?” Liu Menglu joked.
Chloe was silent, looking a little conflicted. Did she have to explain that their boss wanted them to call her that because she wanted to become a mob boss in Italy? The thought of her absurd boss gave Chloe a headache. But since her boss hadn’t called, she decided not to worry about it.
Some people, however, couldn’t be talked about without them appearing. Seeing the name “Boss” pop up on her phone, Chloe suddenly felt a twinge in her stomach.
“Little Chloe! Are you dead? Are you dead? Squeak if you’re not!” Herzwo said with a passionate greeting from the other side of the call, with the sound of red wine being poured.
“Not dead,” Chloe replied, her two words directly shutting down the other person’s banter.
Herzwo was used to Chloe’s temperament. She laughed. “Good that you’re alive. Anyway, I didn’t call for any special reason, just to see if you were dead. Since you’re not, I’m hanging up.” And with that, the line went dead.
Chloe’s forehead twitched. Because she had the phone on speaker, Liu Menglu had heard the entire conversation. She covered her mouth, giggling. The boss she had never met seemed like an interesting character. Chloe didn’t think so. She was about to send a message to tell Herzwo what had happened and ask for reimbursement for the Revitalization Elixir, when…
