This Director Is Not To Be Trifled With - Chapter 12
Just thinking about the way that Director Jiang looked at Xiao Yutong made Song Xian feel completely uncomfortable. She could tell right away that he wasn’t a good person. She didn’t know if Director Yao would or even could protect Xiao Yutong properly.
The entire afternoon, she was on edge. Finally, when Director Yao went downstairs, she chased after him and used her gift of the gab to persuade Yao Mingkai to bring her along.
What Song Xian didn’t know was that Yao Mingkai only intended to bring someone to help drink on behalf of Xiao Yutong.
“What are you doing here?”
Xiao Yutong frowned when she saw only Song Xian in the private room.
“Where’s Yao Mingkai?”
“He went to pick up Director Jiang,” Song Xian replied.
“So it was Yao Mingkai who brought you here?”
Song Xian nodded.
Xiao Yutong’s expression instantly turned cold.
“Song Xian, which department are you even in? Do you really want a chance to prove yourself that badly? The stage for the design department isn’t at a drinking table.”
Song Xian couldn’t accept being questioned like that.
“Aren’t you here too, Director Xiao? Why is it that I can’t be here?”
Xiao Yutong ignored her and walked in without looking back. She threw her bag on the table.
“Leave. Immediately. Or don’t bother coming to work tomorrow.”
“Why?” Song Xian didn’t understand why she was being so resistant.
“No reason.”
Song Xian hated being threatened. Now she really didn’t want to leave.
“Director Xiao, I’m the one who’s been handling this case. No one knows it better than I do. I believe I’m the most suitable person to explain the proposal in depth to Director Jiang.”
Just as the tension between them was about to explode, the door opened.
“Oh! Director Ming told me Director Xiao would be here too. I didn’t believe it, but looks like it’s true!” Director Jiang chuckled.
Xiao Yutong stepped forward to greet him, offering a polite handshake.
“Director Jiang.”
Director Jiang grabbed her hand and didn’t let go.
Feeling something was off, Xiao Yutong pulled her hand away.
An awkward silence followed. Yao Mingkai quickly stepped up and invited Director Jiang to sit. Jiang glanced disdainfully at Xiao Yutong before taking his seat.
“Director Jiang, about the advertising project…”
Yao Mingkai tried to steer the conversation, bowing and scraping as he spoke, while Xiao Yutong sat far from the two of them, silently watching. She disgustedly wiped the hand that had been touched.
“Xiao Song, come over and go through the details with Director Jiang again!” Yao Mingkai called out.
Song Xian, whose eyes had been locked on Xiao Yutong the whole time, was mentally smashing the old man’s hand into pieces. Hearing Yao Mingkai call her, she blinked, then sat next to Director Jiang and began explaining the ad concept in detail.
But Jiang wasn’t listening at all just drinking and eating.
On the outside, Song Xian smiled, but inside she was cursing all eighteen generations of his ancestors.
During the dinner, Xiao Yutong stepped out to take a call.
Seeing her leave, Director Jiang immediately started speaking loudly.
“Your Director Xiao there, pretty girl but way too uptight.”
Yao Mingkai, though wanting to curse too, still smiled and said:
“Yes, yes, you’re right. She’s always focused on design and doesn’t know how to handle people. I hope you’ll be understanding.”
He took a drink, and Jiang followed suit. Then Jiang turned to Song Xian.
“Why isn’t this young lady drinking? You can’t talk business without drinking.”
He poured her a full glass and looked at Yao Mingkai, who gave her a look telling her to drink.
Song Xian’s hand hovered in the air as she hesitated. Suddenly, she felt something disgusting wrap around her waist.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw it was Director Jiang’s hand.
“Xiao Song, right? Learn from your Director Yao. Maybe if you drink this, the deal will go through.”
Everything about that sentence disgusted her. Should she drink the wine or throw it on that filthy hand? Should she break that hand or break that hand?
Song Xian was in turmoil. She had to hold back. She couldn’t blow the deal for the team. But she really, really wanted to kick him in the face.
Splash.
“What the fvck! Who poured that on me?!”
Before she even realized what happened, the wine glass had been snatched from her hand and thrown into Director Jiang’s face.
Did I do that?
No… Did I not?
“Director Jiang, since you love drinking so much, why don’t you have more?”
A calm but icy voice rang out from behind chilling to the bone.
“Xianxian, let’s go.”
Before Song Xian could react, she was pulled out of the room by her knight in shining armor, ignoring the chaos and apologies behind them.
In that moment, it was like a scene from a romantic drama the two of them in slow motion, hair fluttering with each step. Xiao Yutong turned back Song Xian responded with a soft smile. In that noisy world, it felt like it was just the two of them.
Of course, all of that was in Song Xian’s imagination. Xiao Yutong didn’t even glance back once. After they left the private room, she let go. Song Xian didn’t dare smile anymore and just followed silently until they reached Xiao Yutong’s car.
“Get in.”
“What about inside?”
“Yao Mingkai will handle it.”
Song Xian realized that Xiao Yutong was really angry this time. She didn’t say anything else and obediently got in the car. As she watched Xiao Yutong drive, she thought about how she had stood up for her just now and her heart warmed.
She hadn’t expected Xiao Yutong to be so fierce. But now the deal was probably ruined. All that effort, all those sleepless nights, all the hair they’d pulled out brainstorming…
So sad about the hair…
“So the Liloca campaign is completely ruined, huh?” Song Xian muttered.
“What? Regretting it? Want to go back and drink with Director Jiang?” Xiao Yutong snapped like she had swallowed a grenade.
Her words felt like a knife like she had wanted something to happen between her and Director Jiang.
“Xiao Yutong, what do you mean by that?”
“Exactly what I said.”
“Stop the car. Stop it!”
Xiao Yutong pulled over safely. Song Xian angrily opened the door and got out.
There were cars everywhere. Xiao Yutong turned on her hazard lights and asked,
“What are you doing?”
“What do you think?” Song Xian sneered.
“I’m going back to drink with Director Jiang!”
Being harassed hadn’t hurt this much but being misunderstood by her did.
She really was angry now. The kind that needed coaxing.
After she got out, she turned back only to see Xiao Yutong driving off.
Oh. Great. Well done, Xiao Yutong.
She stomped along the roadside, getting more furious with every step.
She was the one who got out, sure but still, you can’t just drive off and leave me!
Nowhere to vent her emotions, she called Jiang Chen and arranged to meet at a bar. Then she left by taxi.
Meanwhile, Xiao Yutong turned back a few minutes later but found the spot empty. She checked nearby streets but found nothing. She must’ve taken a cab home.
How stupid to think Song Xian would just wait there. The girl had legs, money how could she possibly go missing?
She had done too many uncharacteristic things tonight.
After parking in her building’s garage, she got a call from an unfamiliar number.
“Yutong, it’s me.”
She recognized Liu Qianwen’s voice.
“Who?” she said coldly.
“Don’t be like this, Tongtong. I’m trying on wedding dresses tomorrow. Can you come with me? I trust your eye.”
She had said she’d help Liu Qianwen pick the perfect dress but that was when they were planning to marry each other.
“Sure. What’s the store?”
After Liu Qianwen gave the address, Xiao Yutong hung up immediately. She had no intention of going. She wasn’t going to help her ex pick a wedding dress for another man and offer her blessings like some pitiful saint.
If Liu Qianwen could lie to her, she could repay her in kind. Just imagining how angry she’d be tomorrow lifted her mood considerably.
She hesitated in the elevator wondering if she should check if Song Xian had returned. In the end, she didn’t go.
Maybe Song Xian didn’t even want to see her.
Maybe it’s better to wait until tomorrow.
Song Xian and Jiang Chen met at a chill bar. Jiang had just started working at his dad’s company and was stressed too. The two of them drank and vented.
“How could Xiao Yutong say that to me? Do I look like someone who would do anything for a contract? I’d never lower myself like that for some disgusting old man!”
She gritted her teeth at the thought of Director Jiang.
“Why didn’t you just beat the pervert up?” Jiang Chen asked.
“I was about to until she showed up.”
“Oh right. So your precious Director Xiao just completely offended Liloca for your sake.”
True. Xiao Yutong had done that for her.
Then what was she so mad about?
Shouldn’t the two of them be working on a solution now? Rumor had it Jin Cheng’s CEO, Yang Yuhan, was a tough one. Not only had they failed to close the deal, they’d offended the client.
Would Xiao Yutong be in trouble?
“Jiang Chen, I have to go. Also, help me look into that scumbag.”
“Wow. Abandoning your friend for love. Figures.” Jiang Chen shook his head.
Song Xian returned to the complex and went straight to Xiao Yutong’s door. She knocked for a long time before it finally opened.
Even before she saw her face, she could smell the familiar scent of green apple stronger than usual. Song Xian didn’t wait. She pushed the door open, threw her arms around her, and buried her face in her neck.
“I’m sorry, Xiao Yutong. I shouldn’t have gotten mad at you.”
Her voice was hoarse, low, slipping into Xiao Yutong’s ears like smoke.
Being hugged like that, her heart melted. She couldn’t stay angry at this clingy little kitten. She gently stroked her hair.
“You drank again.”
Song Xian rubbed her neck with her chin and hugged tighter.
“Don’t be mad at me anymore, okay?”
Seeing her act like a child, Xiao Yutong assumed she was drunk and softened her tone.
“Alright, I’m not mad. But tell me why did you go to that dinner?”
With both her and Yao Mingkai there, what business did a new designer have being involved? She had clearly forbidden her before. So why?
Standing in the hallway like that wasn’t ideal. Xiao Yutong dragged her inside to the sofa. Song Xian clung like a pendant refusing to let go or speak.
“If you don’t talk, I’ll get mad again,” Xiao Yutong threatened playfully.
Song Xian had never seen her so gentle before. She decided to keep pretending to be drunk—just to see how far this tenderness would go. What was Xiao Yutong really like when her guard was down?
Finally, Song Xian let go and gently cupped Xiao Yutong’s face.
“Because I don’t like that man. The way he looked at you I had to go, to protect you.”
Drunken words, but honest ones.
“You? Protect me?” Xiao Yutong chuckled.
“It’s more like I need to protect you.”
Her hair was still damp, and water dripped from the ends, trailing down her collarbone, disappearing beneath her shirt. Song Xian watched a drop trace its path and couldn’t help but swallow.
Following her gaze, Xiao Yutong looked down only wearing a thin nightgown, with nothing underneath. That wet patch on her chest made for quite the view.
“Song Xian! You perv!”
A crisp slap followed, and Xiao Yutong fled into her room.
When she came out with dry hair, Song Xian was already asleep on the sofa. Her pale face had a red mark on it, the edges already fading.
Had she slapped too hard?
Xiao Yutong boiled two eggs, cooled them, wrapped them in cloth, and gently rolled them over Song Xian’s cheek.
The house was quiet. She knelt on the sofa, half her body leaning over. The pose was intimate. The faint smell of wine on Song Xian’s breath seemed to intoxicate her. Her lips were right there…
Like under a spell, she couldn’t resist she kissed her.
After a few seconds, she snapped out of it, like a startled rabbit, and ran.
Behind her, the supposedly sleeping girl slowly curled her lips into a satisfied smile.
