This Director Is Not To Be Trifled With - Chapter 18
Xiao Yutong clenched the glass of water tightly in her hand, expressionless as she stared at the two people laughing and chatting across from her. She thought to herself, Song Xian really can get along with anyone! They had just met that young guy less than three minutes ago, and they were already chatting so enthusiastically.
The young man looked at Song Xian with admiration. When Song Xian spoke, her eyes kept looking at Xiao Yutong.
Indeed, Song Xian’s face easily attracted attention in a crowd. That was the reason Xiao Yutong chose Song Xian back at the bar. Seeing others approach her made her heart feel heavy in a way she had never experienced before perhaps it was possessiveness? Like her own thing was being defiled by others.
Seeing Song Xian still smiling at that young man, Xiao Yutong felt even worse inside. Frustrated, she put down her glass and stood up to leave, unaware of how hard she had hit, which startled Yao Mingkai, who was talking nearby.
Xiao Yutong went out to the corridor and took a deep breath of fresh air, but the knot in her heart remained unresolved. She suddenly felt like having a cigarette, and asked the waiter for one. She used to smoke occasionally when work was stressful but hadn’t touched cigarettes in two years.
Leaning against the railing, the cigarette was held lightly between her slender index and middle fingers. She took a gentle puff, her sexy red lips exhaled white smoke. She only took one puff before feeling a bit choked, just about to stub out the cigarette, when a familiar voice came from the doorway.
“Smoking is bad for your health, Director Xiao.”
She kept the cigarette in her mouth, stood up from the railing, and turned her face to the sky outside. The stars were still beautiful tonight, but she didn’t feel like admiring them just glanced upward.
Song Xian walked over, took the cigarette from her lips, and naturally took a puff herself, immediately followed by a violent coughing fit.
Song Xian: “Cough, cough, cough… what kind of cigarette is this? So harsh.”
“Really?” Xiao Yutong snatched the cigarette back from Song Xian’s mouth and took a puff with a composed expression, “I think it’s okay.”
The latter half of her sentence was nearly strangled out; the smoke was indeed harsh, and she was holding back the tickle in her throat.
Song Xian, of course, knew Xiao Yutong was pretending to be calm and cool in front of her after all, she was the queen of acting cool.
One reason Song Xian came tonight, besides being afraid of boredom at home, was mainly because she worried someone might be interested in Xiao Yutong after all, she was so charming.
But it seemed she was overthinking it. Jin Cheng was one thing, but even the employees of Liloca seemed afraid of her. After chatting with Li Jie, Song Xian learned that Xiao Yutong’s reputation had already spread to Liloca, especially after she threw wine at Jiang Haonan.
Jiang Haonan usually acted tyrannically at Liloca, so their employees were quite pleased to see him brought down. On one hand, they admired Xiao Yutong’s courage; on the other, they feared someone who dared to confront their boss Jiang Haonan directly.
The young man had come to ask Song Xian for her WeChat, but she didn’t give it. They ended up chatting and cursing Jiang Haonan, getting a bit emotional. When she looked up to find Xiao Yutong, she was already gone.
Seeing Xiao Yutong about to smoke again, Song Xian immediately snatched the cigarette and stubbed it out.
“Enough, don’t be stubborn.”
Song Xian: “Why did you come out? Don’t you like these kinds of occasions?”
“No, it’s too noisy.” During the early days of starting her business, she had no choice, but now that she had options, she wanted to live more freely.
Song Xian leaned both hands on the railing, tilted her head back, and pressed her back, “I quite like it. Don’t you think it’s lively? Being alone can be very lonely.”
Xiao Yutong: “Isn’t loneliness even stronger in a noisy environment?”
Song Xian tilted her head and smiled at Xiao Yutong, “Director Xiao, you really understand loneliness deeply!”
Xiao Yutong smiled bitterly, “Rather than understanding, I think I’m trapped in it.”
Song Xian caught a trace of sadness from Xiao Yutong’s expression, although she hid it well.
Song Xian stopped smiling and said seriously, “Xiao Yutong, have you always been alone?”
Just then, Xiao Yutong’s phone rang; it was Yao Mingkai calling. Everyone had almost finished eating and was about to leave, but they didn’t see Xiao Yutong. After sending off Liloca’s boss, they each went home. Zhang Xin and the others took taxis separately, since they lived in different directions and didn’t want to trouble their colleague.
Yao Mingkai and Yang Yuhan greeted Xiao Yutong before leaving with their designated drivers.
Before long, only Song Xian and Xiao Yutong remained among the noisy group.
Xiao Yutong: “Let’s go.”
Song Xian responded with a “Mm,” and followed her into the car.
Song Xian leaned against the car window, still wearing sunglasses, staring at the night scenery outside. Xiao Yutong focused on driving. Neither spoke, just like the soft music playing from the stereo quiet and peaceful.
Xiao Yutong kept thinking about Song Xian’s question. Yes, she always seemed glamorous but had always been alone. When she was little, her mother was always busy with work, so she was alone. In college, she worked part-time and had no friends, so she was alone.
After starting work, she busied herself with social events and dealing with all kinds of people. When she returned home at night, she was still alone.
She thought marrying Liu Qianwen would change that, but she was still alone. She wasn’t afraid of loneliness, only of the loneliness after being together and then separated.
At a red light, she glanced at Song Xian and sometimes envied her. Song Xian could get along with anyone, and wherever she went, there were always many friends around. But no one could blame others for liking to be friends with her.
Being with Song Xian was indeed relaxing and comfortable. Although Song Xian sometimes made flirty remarks and often teased her, it was never annoying. Some people are just naturally likable, a favor from heaven.
Actually, it wasn’t Song Xian who saw her first at the bar. The moment she entered, she was attracted by a group of noisy girls and saw Song Xian, like a queen, sitting in the middle. That red dress made it hard not to notice her, along with her smile brighter than sunshine.
So Song Xian coming to find her made her secretly happy.
Before she realized it, the car had already entered the garage. When they got out, Song Xian took off her sunglasses.
Xiao Yutong asked in confusion, “Why are you wearing sunglasses at night?”
Song Xian raised her eyebrows at her and joked, “Because I want to look cool!”
The tone was clearly not a serious answer. Xiao Yutong shook her head helplessly and walked ahead to the elevator.
Song Xian hurried after her. They got into the elevator, and Song Xian stood by the floor buttons, pressing 16.
Xiao Yutong frowned and looked at Song Xian, forcing out a puzzled expression, “Aren’t you going to press it?”
Song Xian shrugged, “I already did!”
Xiao Yutong didn’t want to talk more, pressed 17 instead, passing Song Xian.
Song Xian said, “Director Xiao, won’t you invite me to your place for a visit?”
Song Xian’s mischievous look made it clear what she was thinking. The elevator reached the 16th floor, and the doors opened.
Xiao Yutong pretended to be very reluctant, “Well, why not? We can just settle our debts from before.”
“Director Xiao, after you.” Song Xian gestured politely with one hand on her lower abdomen. She didn’t want to settle things so soon. Even if they slept together, she would be the one to sleep with Xiao Yutong. She touched the injury on her face today was obviously not suitable.
Xiao Yutong looked back at the closing elevator doors. She and Song Xian shared the same thought they didn’t want to end this abnormal relationship so soon.
She was like a stagnant pool, and Song Xian was like a water-skimming dragonfly, causing small ripples in that still water, which made her unable to suppress a faint smile until they entered.
Attending such a gathering, even doing nothing but sitting there, was exhausting. She casually pulled out the shirt tucked into her skirt, unzipped the skirt, and took off her high heels, feeling much more relaxed.
She collapsed on the sofa as if drained of energy. She had bought this sofa at a high price for exactly this purpose. It was very soft, like falling into a bottomless pit, lying there without feeling back pain even after a long time.
Wait.
Xiao Yutong noticed the jacket she had left on the sofa in the morning was missing. She quickly looked toward the balcony and saw the door was open. Had someone been inside?
She turned over, about to sit up, when suddenly a pale, enlarged face appeared right in front of her, scaring her.
“Mom, you almost scared me to death.”
Xiao Yutong patted her startled heart and lay back down.
Xiao Qiang was lying calmly on the other corner of the sofa with a facial mask on, “Tsk tsk tsk, look at this house, you’ll never find a man like this.”
Xiao Yutong sighed helplessly, “Then why don’t you go find your man? You still have time to come bother me.”
“Sigh, had a fight with Kevin,” Xiao Qiang also sighed.
Xiao Yutong could roughly guess who Kevin was. She asked, “Wasn’t he madly in love with you? How come you fought?”
“Because of the wedding! You know I always wanted a Western style wedding, with a wedding dress and red carpet, but he insisted on a traditional Chinese wedding, so we argued.” Xiao Qiang continued to complain, but Xiao Yutong didn’t listen much she had gone through the same stage every time she got married.
Xiao Qiang got more and more excited, gesticulating wildly. Xiao Yutong was tired and pulled her back onto the sofa, removing the facial mask.
Xiao Yutong: “Dear Mom, I hope you find your own happiness, but I don’t think Kevin is it.”
Xiao Qiang pressed, “Why not? We love each other very much.”
Xiao Yutong wasn’t sure who was whose mother, and said, “Don’t you think he’s too young? My mom, he’s only three months older than your daughter!”
Xiao Qiang naturally disagreed, “So what? Didn’t you say love can transcend gender? If it can transcend gender, then age is nothing.”
Xiao Qiang spoke confidently, and Xiao Yutong didn’t know what to say. Experience told her persuading was pointless, not worth wasting breath.
“Alright then! I wish you happiness, dear Mom.”
