This Director Is Not To Be Trifled With - Chapter 29
Xiao Yutong calmly walked up to the stage and took the microphone handed over by the host. She wore a faint, ironic smile. Every time Xiao Yutong showed that expression, it usually meant something bad was about to happen.
Liu Qianwen looked nervous, but there was nothing she could do now.
Xiao Yutong said, “Hello, everyone. I’m Liu Qianwen’s ex-girlfriend. I’m here today to offer the happy couple a few words of blessing.”
“Ex-girlfriend?”
“What do you mean, ex-girlfriend?”
“Could it be…”
The guests buzzed in disbelief. The bride and groom’s faces turned pale, and the host looked incredibly awkward.
“Xiao Yutong, what are you trying to do?” Liu Qianwen tried to stop her, but Xiao Yutong pushed her aside, nearly knocking her into the groom. The groom quickly dodged.
Xiao Yutong continued, “Before I give my blessings, I’d like everyone to take a look at the big screen.”
Song Xian’s curiosity was piqued. She wanted to know what kind of bombshell Xiao Yutong was about to drop. Under everyone’s expectant gaze, photos of Xiao Yutong and Liu Qianwen appeared on the screen, followed by a video of Liu Qianwen celebrating Xiao Yutong’s birthday.
“Today is my darling Tongtong’s birthday. I prepared a cake and cooked her favorite dishes. Can’t wait to see her reaction,” said Liu Qianwen in a selfie video.
In the next scene, Xiao Yutong appeared, clearly just home from work, looking tired. But when she saw Liu Qianwen, she still smiled.
Xiao Yutong: “Why are you still up this late?”
Liu Qianwen: “I can’t sleep without you.” Then she jumped up and kissed her.
At this point, Song Xian clenched her fists. She felt like Xiao Yutong’s beautiful face was being defiled by such a memory.
The footage that followed was even more explicit. Song Xian didn’t want to keep watching. Deep down, she admired Xiao Yutong. To take revenge on Liu Qianwen, she even used herself as bait.
But that was nothing compared to what came next.
The following clips were more explosive intimate photos of the groom with various women, and some rather indecent videos.
The murmuring among the guests grew louder. The faces of the bride and groom shifted between pale white and green. The groom shouted for the playback to stop and called security to kick Xiao Yutong out.
Xiao Yutong seized the last moment to offer her “blessing”:
“Wishing you two a lifetime together, a deep and eternal love may you stay united forever. You love each other, so thank you… for ridding society of two pests.”
Several security guards and groomsmen rushed toward the stage. Before they could reach her, Xiao Yutong tossed the microphone and jumped down.
She shouted, “Song Xian!”
Song Xian, already barefoot and waiting, grabbed Xiao Yutong’s outstretched hand. To block the pursuers, she kicked over a heavy table, spilling hot soup everywhere. Screams and murmurs filled the air just the kind of soundtrack you’d expect at a wedding, only not this one.
Xiao Yutong’s long hair danced behind her as she ran, drawing beautiful arcs in the air. She glanced back occasionally, her side profile breathtaking. It reminded Song Xian of that night when Xiao Yutong had also grabbed her hand and run.
At first, Song Xian thought Xiao Yutong had just wanted to show off to her ex “Thanks for leaving me, I found someone better.” But she never expected things to go this wild. Crashing the wedding? That’s her kind of vibe.
Song Xian struggled to keep up her dress was too long. One hand was held by Xiao Yutong, the other holding up her skirt.
The chasers were gaining on them. Song Xian panted as she ran. “Xiao Yutong, next time you pull a stunt like this, at least give me a heads up so I can wear workout clothes!”
Xiao Yutong turned and burst into laughter at the ridiculous sight of Song Xian. She pulled her aside, crouched down, pulled a utility knife from her bag, and sliced Song Xian’s skirt. One hard yank, and the long gown became a mini skirt.
Song Xian stared. Why does she carry a knife around? Is she planning to go full street fighter?
Xiao Yutong stood up smugly. “Problem solved.”
Song Xian bit her lip. Xiao Yutong just destroyed her five-figure designer gown but why did she find it kind of… hot? Song Xian loved this kind of boldness, even if it was expensive.
“Stop! Stop right there!”
The chasers were closing in. Xiao Yutong grabbed Song Xian again, and they kept running.
Xiao Yutong: “Where’s your luxury car?”
“Right at the front.”
With the skirt no longer in the way, Song Xian darted forward and took the lead.
The car wasn’t rented it was from her family. The driver was Uncle Zhang, her father’s chauffeur. Song Xian had already texted him during the chaos, telling him to park out front.
They reached the car. The door was open. Song Xian pushed Xiao Yutong inside first, then flashed a middle finger at their pursuers before getting in. The car slowly pulled away. Song Xian grinned as she shut the door.
“Except for the PE tests in college, I haven’t run this hard in years,” said Xiao Yutong, panting. The wedding had been held in the back hall of the hotel, so they’d run quite a distance.
“Always knew your stamina sucked,” Song Xian teased.
“Whose stamina sucks? How about tonight we…” Xiao Yutong trailed off, realizing they weren’t alone in the car.
Song Xian: “Xiao Yutong, you’re something else. People like that scummy couple need someone like you to put them in their place.”
Xiao Yutong beamed. “Of course! Who am I? The top director of Jincheng!”
Song Xian looked puzzled. “I’ve never heard that title before.”
Xiao Yutong: “Of course not. I just made it up.”
Song Xian couldn’t help laughing. Who would’ve thought the famously unapproachable Director Xiao had such a mischievous side?
They had ruined someone’s wedding and flipped tables but they couldn’t just run off. They were civilized citizens, after all. Song Xian had Uncle Zhang drop them off by the riverside while he went back to the hotel to help “clean up.”
The river stretched wide. In the gentle sunlight, the ripples shimmered. Birds soared overhead, gliding against the wind.
Song Xian bought a few beers from a small shop. The two of them sat on a bench under a tree, drinking in the breeze, relaxed and carefree.
Song Xian popped a beer and handed it to Xiao Yutong. “Let’s toast.”
Xiao Yutong took it, downed it, and opened another. She looked up at the sky. Even under the sparse shadows of the tree, the harsh sunlight still stung her eyes, and she instinctively raised a hand to shield them.
“Why do you like drinking?” she asked.
Song Xian took a sip and deflected, “Who says I like drinking?”
“You’re at the bar every night. What else do you do there if not drink?” Xiao Yutong asked, then answered her own question. “Oh right, you’re there to pick up girls.”
Song Xian clinked bottles with her. “You really get me, Director Xiao.”
Xiao Yutong took another swig. Song Xian didn’t stop her she knew that even though Xiao Yutong seemed calm, she must be feeling a bit hollow inside. Revenge always came with emptiness.
That’s why Song Xian had brought the drinks to let her release all the emotions building up.
Xiao Yutong suddenly said, “Hey, what’s the deal with all you scumbag types? Don’t you people feel guilty?”
“What do you mean you people? I’m not a scumbag!” Song Xian was speechless. It was bad enough being lumped in with that sleazy guy and Liu Qianwen. But now being called a female scumbag? Unacceptable.
“You know what a scumbag girl is?” she began her defense. “She’s tall at least 170cm. Rich, gorgeous, great figure. Talented, charming, gentle and attentive, emotionally complex”
“Stop, stop, stop.” Xiao Yutong couldn’t listen anymore. “You make it sound like a divine being. You’re just justifying yourself.”
That mouth of Song Xian’s could turn black into white and spin stories from a blank page.
“I’m not making excuses. I’m just saying, not every woman is like Liu Qianwen. The one in front of you now? She’s pretty great.”
Song Xian leaned over and shamelessly kissed her on the cheek.
Xiao Yutong took a sip, smiled bitterly, and looked down. “Do you know when those photos were taken?”
“I was working late. She used my money to go on dates with someone else. And I didn’t even realize. Isn’t that ridiculous?”
She laughed at herself. But as she laughed, tears welled up in her eyes.
“At first, when I found out she cheated, I was furious. Her betrayal felt humiliating. But that was then. Seeing those photos again, remembering all the times she said she missed me when she was actually in someone else’s arms it still hurts.”
She turned to Song Xian. “Do you think I actually loved her?”
Song Xian blinked. “You were gonna marry her. If you didn’t love her, then you were pretty scummy too.”
Xiao Yutong said, “I always thought marriage was just a life stage. When I met Liu Qianwen, being with her felt easy, so we got together. I never really thought about love. I didn’t think I was capable of love or that I’d ever find real love. Marriage is about compatibility.”
“But why…” she whispered. “Why does it still hurt so much, Song Xian?”
This was the first time Song Xian had seen Xiao Yutong break down. No matter what, it was clear she had once truly loved Liu Qianwen.
Song Xian didn’t fully understand love either. Her past girlfriends were all about looks and bedroom chemistry. As for love? She had no say in that. Marriage? Never crossed her mind.
Even though Xiao Yutong was older, emotionally she was still a rookie maybe even a little naïve.
Song Xian understood her pain. But why did she feel a sting in her own heart too? Seeing Xiao Yutong cry, hurting over someone else… it made her heart ache. And jealous.
Jealous that it was Liu Qianwen who still had a place in Xiao Yutong’s heart. Jealous that the tears weren’t for her.
Oh, Song Xian looks like your day has come. She gently wiped the tears from Xiao Yutong’s face and let her rest her head on her shoulder.
Xiao Yutong kept talking and drinking. Eventually, she got drunk. Her words slurred.
“Song Xian… you’re worse than Liu Qianwen.”
Song Xian asked softly, “How am I worse?”
But Xiao Yutong didn’t hear her. She mumbled to herself, “You’re so nice to everyone… so gentle… always surrounded by women…”
She leaned on Song Xian, back to the river, and murmured:
“But why… why am I so drawn to you?”
