- Chapter 10 - The Kitchen (Part II)
Yu Luo was starting to feel sleepy. Life inside this book was much harder than her life in the real world.
All she wanted now was to crawl into bed and get some sleep.
Maybe when she opened her eyes again, she’d discover this had all been just a dream.
After sending all the servants away, Yu Luo lay down on her pillow and drifted off to sleep.
In a hazy dream, Yu Luo saw herself being tied by a group of men in black to a red-hot iron pillar. She was terrified and tried to break free, but no matter how she struggled, she couldn’t escape their grip.
Just as she was about to be pressed onto the burning post, knock knock a sound interrupted her.
Yu Luo broke out in a cold sweat and slowly opened her eyes.
The original ending of Miss Yu in the novel truly was a nightmare for her.
The male lead, being the chosen one of fate in the entire book, never let anyone who had crossed him off the hook.
Yu Luo sighed.
Few people were as unlucky as her.
She had done nothing wrong, yet she was being punished for the misdeeds of the original Miss Yu.
Just then, she realized that the sound that had pulled her from her nightmare had returned.
There was another knock at the window.
Yu Luo froze for a moment, then cautiously moved toward the window.
When she opened it, a tall, cold figure stood outside.
It was Xiao-ge…
The big shot himself…
Thinking of how, in her dream, she had nearly been pressed onto a burning post by this man’s subordinates made Yu Luo shiver uncontrollably.
At the sight of him, she instinctively took two steps back.
Li Xiao’s gaze was indifferent, yet held an indescribable undertone. “Miss Yu.”
Yu Luo wore a crimson sleeping robe. Her dark hair, unlike the neat style she wore during the day, now hung loosely over her shoulders, cascading down her back.
Under the soft autumn moonlight, her features looked even more delicate and beautiful, her pointed chin especially evoking sympathy.
She truly looked like a different person from the Miss Yu Li Xiao had seen just days ago.
Having spent his youth on battlefields, Li Xiao had seen many strange, unexplainable things. He wasn’t surprised by this sudden change only intrigued.
Yu Luo’s eyes still held a trace of confusion. She hadn’t quite grasped what was happening. “You… what are you doing here?”
Li Xiao held out the kite from earlier that day. “The young miss’s kite has been repaired.”
Yu Luo reached out and took it.
Casually, she said, “Then come in through the window. Be careful not to wake anyone else.”
It was night, and they were alone man and woman but Yu Luo wasn’t worried that Li Xiao would do anything inappropriate.
According to the novel’s original setting, the male lead Li Xiao never forced women to do anything.
He was of noble status and striking appearance. No matter the situation, he was always someone others followed and admired.
As the protagonist of a male-oriented novel, Li Xiao was ambitious, solely focused on power and status. He never cared for beauty or romance.
Women, to him, were as fleeting as smoke.
Besides, Yu Luo knew herself well.
She always thought of herself as a frail little girl.
No voluptuous curves, no seductive red lips or long legs how could a man like him possibly be interested in her?
Unless, perhaps, he was tired of gourmet meals and wanted a taste of plain porridge but that was entirely impossible.
Yu Luo played with the kite for a moment. She had to admit Li Xiao’s hands were incredibly skillful. Even the tear at the kite’s tail had been seamlessly repaired, as if it had never been damaged in the first place.
She set the kite aside, then looked up at Li Xiao. “What kind of reward do you want?”
Li Xiao was at least 188cm tall. Yu Luo, currently only 160cm, had to tilt her head back just to talk to him.
The difference in height and build was quite stark.
Li Xiao answered coolly, “The medicine the young miss gifted earlier I have already used it. That is enough of a reward.”
Yu Luo furrowed her delicate brows slightly.
She thought for a moment.
Ever since Li Xiao was whipped by the original Miss Yu, he’d been frequently bullied by other guards in the household.
To curry favor with Miss Yu, those guards would often make things difficult for Li Xiao, even stealing his food.
The meals for the servants weren’t plentiful to begin with, nor were they particularly tasty.
Li Xiao was tall and strong how could he possibly be eating enough of those meager, greasy dishes?
Yu Luo picked up a plate of osmanthus milk cakes from the table. “Take this as a reward.”
Li Xiao remained silent, but the corners of his lips curved slightly. “Thank you, Miss Yu. But I don’t need it.”
He had no interest in sticky, sweet foods like these.
But Yu Luo didn’t care. She picked up a piece of cake and held it to his lips. “I, your lady, told you to eat it, so you have to eat it.”
As soon as she said it, her heart skipped a beat she knew full well he was the big shot, and here she was, trying to force-feed him? Was she tired of living?
Li Xiao looked mildly surprised, but said nothing more. He leaned in and took the cake from her hand, bite by bite.
Until his lips brushed against her fingertips.
The cake was rich with the scent of milk and osmanthus, but Yu Luo’s hand had a faint floral fragrance like orchid and musk. Perhaps from handling the dessert, her fingers carried a slight milky scent too.
Because of their height difference, Yu Luo had to stand on tiptoe just to reach his mouth. Her gesture seemed perfectly normal to her but to an outsider, the scene would appear strangely intimate.
As his cool lips grazed her fingers, Yu Luo felt something wasn’t right and quickly pulled her hand back.
In all her life, she had never been this physically close to a man before.
Xiao-ge truly lived up to being the male lead. Even with his handsome face hidden, just his aura alone was enough to make a girl’s heart flutter.
Yu Luo’s ears turned red, but she forced herself to stay calm. “Eat the rest of the cake. There’s Cloud Mist Tea on the table.”
Li Xiao had never found these desserts appetizing, but something about the ones in Yu Luo’s room tasted different.
After finishing the cake, Li Xiao took his leave.
Yu Luo was truly exhausted. This time, once she got into bed, she slept straight through the night without dreaming.
When breakfast was delivered the next morning, there was a dish of autumn oil-dressed tofu skin. Ziming said it had been specially sent by the kitchen staff.
A day late, but still it had finally come. Yu Luo, however, no longer had the appetite for it.
Since her mother’s passing, she had suffered many such grievances under her stepmother’s hand.
Yu Luo understood one thing well: once you swallowed one injustice, more would follow. The more willing you were to endure bitterness, the more of it you’d be forced to endure.
The kitchen staff directly impacted her daily meals. Yu Luo had to assert control over them she couldn’t let them control her instead.
Yu Luo said, “Send it back. I don’t want to eat this today.”
Ziming replied at once, “They really think they can treat you like this, miss? I’ll throw it right back at them!”
