On the other side, Liu Yanran was crying into her handkerchief, her tears soaking it through.
Yu Yuan watched his cousin sob so pitifully, and slowly, a trace of anger stirred in his heart. He was certain that Yu Luo had bullied Liu Yanran on purpose.
Choking with emotion, Liu Yanran tearfully recounted the situation, while her maid, Caidie, added indignantly, “It’s just this our young miss has been having a miserable time in this manor. She can’t even have a simple vegetarian dish most days, and yesterday, just for eating one extra dish, the eldest young lady humiliated her in front of the Madam.”
At that moment, Yu Che happened to return from outside and overheard what Caidie said.
Yu Che frowned slightly and gently comforted Liu Yanran, “Alright, Yan’er, don’t cry anymore. Your eyes will swell. You’re a young lady of this house too whatever belongs to her, you also have a share. Don’t let this small matter upset you.”
Still crying, Liu Yanran said, “I’m packing up and going back home. I can’t live like this anymore, under someone else’s roof.”
Seeing how heartbroken she was, Yu Che immediately sent someone to summon Yu Luo, insisting that she come and apologize to Liu Yanran.
With her handkerchief still covering her face, Liu Yanran unconsciously curled her lips into a smirk.
She knew just how much Yu Luo admired her two older brothers.
In Yu Luo’s heart, these two brothers one scholarly and one martial were her idols.
Just to maintain a good image in their eyes and clear up any misunderstandings, she would definitely come.
As long as Yu Luo showed up, whether or not she was at fault, Yu Yuan and Yu Che would surely scold her.
Not long after, the servant sent to call Yu Luo returned.
He reported, “The young lady said she’s not feeling well and doesn’t want to leave her room today. She’ll visit the eldest young master another time.”
Liu Yanran was dumbfounded.
It was the first time she had ever seen Yu Luo refuse an invitation from Yu Yuan.
In the past, no matter the situation no matter how ill Yu Luo was if Yu Yuan invited her, she’d cheerfully dress up and head over to his side.
Yu Yuan couldn’t believe it. “Are you sure you passed the message directly to her?”
The servant nodded. “Yes, I did. The young lady personally said she didn’t want to come.”
Yu Yuan didn’t understand why Yu Luo would reject even his invitation.
He waved his hand. “I’ll go see Luo’er myself later.”
Liu Yanran’s scheme was a complete failure. Despite crying like a tearful beauty, Yu Luo never came.
After weeping for a while, she had no choice but to leave with Yu Che.
Later that evening, Yu Luo suddenly realized something very important.
She had arranged for the male lead to stay at Wenhua Pavilion. Rumor had it that the place was haunted. Whether the ghost rumors were true or not didn’t matter Yu Luo’s real purpose was to ease tensions between them and reduce his resentment.
Even if there were ghosts, the male lead’s protagonist halo should be more than enough to protect him.
But… what if he misunderstood her?
Wouldn’t that just backfire and make things worse?
With that thought, Yu Luo became a bit anxious.
Lying lazily on the chaise lounge, she thought for a while and said, “Do we have an unused lamp in the room? Bring one over.”
Soon, Ziming came in with a glazed palace lamp.
Yu Luo pointed to the table beside her. “Put it there. I have something I need to instruct Li Zhao about go and call him.”
Ziming nodded and hurried off.
The changes in the kitchen staff quickly spread throughout the manor. Previously, things had been run by Madam Zheng, but she had now been replaced by the quiet and honest Madam Bai.
All the others had lost their positions and were expelled from the Yu residence.
These women used to hold a lot of sway they were close to the masters and had influence.
But now, as they were thrown out, their former glory vanished. Many of those they used to bully came to laugh at their downfall.
After the kitchen reshuffle, the rest of the manor’s servants began to wake up.
Previously, everyone had assumed that Yu Luo would eventually marry out, while the cousin Liu Yanran might marry into the family as the future mistress. So they flattered and fawned over Liu Yanran and did the bare minimum for Yu Luo.
Now, however, it seemed clear the “future mistress” was no match for the real one already in charge.
Soon after the staff changes, Madam Bai prepared a crab roe cake and personally brought it to Yu Luo in an attempt to curry favor.
Yu Yuan, who had been waiting all evening for Yu Luo to come and explain herself, finally lost his patience and came to Jishui Courtyard himself later that night.
When he reached the gate, he had one of the servant girls doing menial work go in to announce his arrival.
The servant girl informed Bitong, who then relayed the message to Yu Luo.
Yu Luo knew exactly why Yu Yuan had come.
She had made their precious little green tea baby cry of course he’d come storming over to scold her.
Yu Luo said calmly, “Tell him I’m already resting and not feeling well. I won’t be seeing anyone tonight.”
Bitong was quietly pleased to hear this.
Finally, the young lady had come to her senses.
Bitong had always resented how Yu Luo used to follow her two brothers around like a clown, even when their servants mocked her behind her back calling her a dog fawning over their masters and mocked Bitong and Ziming too. It had always made Bitong feel bitter and indignant.
Now, she was glad to deliver the message.
She went back out and repeated Yu Luo’s words.
Yu Yuan was taken aback. “Luo’er refuses to see me?”
“It’s not that she refuses,” Bitong replied. “The young lady is unwell and has already gone to bed. Eldest young master should come another day.”
Yu Yuan insisted, “I just want to ask her something. Let me in.”
“Even siblings must observe propriety,” Bitong said. “The young lady hasn’t dressed up properly.”
It was the first time Yu Yuan had been shut out by Yu Luo, and he felt a strange surge of frustration.
But with Bitong saying so much, he had no choice but to leave.
As he walked away, he spotted a guard approaching with Ziming, heading toward Jishui Courtyard.
He casually asked what was going on.
Ziming replied, “The young lady has something she wants Guard Li to handle, so she sent me to call him.”
Yu Yuan was stunned, a flicker of anger rising in his chest.
Yu Luo had refused to see him, yet she was seeing a guard?
If propriety was a concern, shouldn’t she be avoiding this guard?
Yu Yuan sneered. “If she needs something done, why wouldn’t she ask her brother? Why send some lowly servant?”
Li Zhao gave him a calm, indifferent glance.
Ziming replied, “In the past, when the young lady asked you for help, you were always too busy saying you had to tend to the cousin, and couldn’t spare time for our miss. Since the cousin is upset today, the young lady wouldn’t dare trouble you. It’s better to rely on someone else.”
What Ziming said was absolutely true.
Back then, whenever the eldest young lady had sought help from her brothers, they always favored Liu Yanran and barely paid attention to their own sister.
